No, premiership. Football/soccer works differently to RL/AFL.

What we call the minor premiership is in fact the premiership in A-League. What we term as premiers in NRL are actually the champions in A-League.

They are the facts. The A-League presents the Premiers Plate, currently held by Central Coast, and the Champions Trophy (aka the toilet seat), currently held by Newcastle.

wtf

It's to do with the fact that soccer has always placed more importance on consistency for a whole season, therefore "winning the league". The championship is icing on the cake, whereas premiers are far more feted. This obviously hasn't carried in Australia, as the culture recognises the champions as a higher class.

While winning the champion trophy would be nice, winning the premiership is far more satisfying from the point of view of the team being good over an extended period of time, which the 'Coast was last year.

Timmah, shut up.

You wouldnt be saying that if Newcastle were MINOR premiers and Central coast had won the GRAND FINAL (therefore winning the season)

You cant bring all that 'in football...' stuff here because the comp was set up with a grand final therefore whoever wins that wins everything.

Agreed. Had the finals system not be put in place to begin with, the minor would obviously be the pinnacle. As it stands, it's gonna be recognised like any other minor premiership system in Australian sports...

 Spoken like a guy who supports a team that chokes in the big one. In world football you might be right, but in the A-League, nobody give two sh*ts about who wins the 'premiership'.

I simply told the facts and my opinon. They are not MINOR premiers, they are premiers, and Newcastle are champions. They are facts.

Of course a fan of the team that won the championship is going to say that ;-)
and when we win the ACL ?
Different competition tbh.

Even fans of teams that haven't won the competition would rather win the big one. Mariners fans are the only ones who bleat about how 'prestigious' the premiership is.

Call it what you want...It's still the minor premiership in just about everyones eyes...

Where did I say "prestige"? Just proud of the club winning the plate for being the most consistent over the season. Newcastle clearly have the prestige of being Champions, which gets far more recognition.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/01/20/2142506.htm

The Mariners meet local rivals Newcastle Jets in the first leg of the major semi-final in Newcastle next Sunday.

The winner of the two legs of the major semi-final will advance straight into the season decider.

Also....

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23082358-5003460,00.html

There are also numerous other articles on the web saying Central Coast Minor Premiers.... even though they may be 'premiers' by 'football definition', no-one in Australia thinks of them as that, even people in the media. (except for you and a few other CC supporters)

So you admit it, but because you come from an RL background you refuse to accept it?

Why is it up to you to decide what a sport calls it's winners? I've happily conceded Newcastle are the Champions and quite clearly earn far more "prestige", but that doesn't mean I can't be proud of my club for the premiership it won. You're arguing interpretation now, I've won it on facts.
