England launches $5m NRL raid

By Josh Massoud | November 12, 2008 11:00pm

IF you can't beat 'em, buy 'em.

While almighty Australia have doomed England's World Cup campaign on the field, salvation awaits off it as Pommy chequebooks gather to launch their most audacious raid on our best players yet.

The Cup has attracted an unprecedented influx of rich UK Super League clubs to Australia, all of whom have one eye on the action and the other on a $5 million hitlist of NRL talent.

Representatives from no less than nine Super League outfits have met with NRL player agents over the past fortnight to discuss their targets for next season and beyond.

And according to leading managers, the poaching strategy has switched from "quantity to quality" in the wake of overseas quotas dropping to just five imports.

With the same amount of cash to splash and less players available, English CEOs and coaches have set their sights on the very best off-contract talent for 2010.

Premium stars Darren Lockyer, Karmichael Hunt and Robbie Farah are all expected to field huge offers, with the Australian skipper already understood to be in the sights of glamour club Wigan.

Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan and coach Brian Noble have been in Sydney with a host of Super League counterparts including Gary Hetherington (Leeds), Steve O'Connor (Widnes) and Neil Hudgell (Hull).

Player agent David Riolo - who has Aussie Test trio Hunt, Ryan Hoffman and David Williams off-contract this season - confirmed the intentions of the British.

"I've had four or five meetings and they definitely seemed to have turned their attention to quality," Riolo said last night. "The names mentioned to me were top players like Lockyer, Thurston, Prince and Hunt.

"They are looking to go bigger than ever because of the reduced quotas for Australian players.

"If every UK club does that then it's a dangerous thing for the NRL."

Fellow agent Sam Ayoub - who is negotiating for Farah - agreed.

"I'll be meeting a few of the clubs in the next week," he said.

"They aren't here for a holiday - there's even greater demand for elite players this time around."

Speaking during a harbour cruise yesterday, Hetherington said he was on the lookout for a centre and winger to bolster the Leeds roster.

"We've got a track record of getting some very good Australian players - Danny Buderus and Greg Eastwood will be with us next year," he said. "It's now about quality rather than quantity - we are definitely on the lookout for outstanding, world-class players."

Suspended Shark Greg Bird also shapes as a wildcard for the UK raiders, with his future at Cronulla uncertain for next season. It is understood the NRL will deregister Bird if he is sacked by the Sharks.

why can't these pricks just f**k off and develop their own talent :x

no wonder the English team is f**king garbage

Blame the NRL for not being able to keep its own talent. Any sporting comp wants the best in the world to bolster its ranks.

You must have missed the SL GF. It was the one worth watching out of the two! Don't confuse the English national team with the entertainment that is on offer in SL. The English soccer team hasn't come close to winning anything for 40+ years yet the EPL is rated the best domestic comp in the world.

Of course it was. No game as lopsided as the NRL Grand Final would ever be entertaining to the casual viewer, no matter how good the level of play. Entertainment is about drama and tension as much as it is about skill - and skill is all that's been questioned so far in this thread.

Maybe some of the australian players want to continue to play rugby league - the NRL with its endless laying on, grapples and 2 refs is no longer rugby league. If aussies wish to continue to play rugby league they can come to europe or they can hang around to see what mockery of the game develops in australia.

becuase the english cannot, and will never have the anility to develop the players to a NRL standard. Regardless of what the pommie trolls tell us, they always have been and always will be streets behind us when it comes to our game.

LOL - and England wonder why they suck at the International Game. They'd rather spend money raiding our game than spending it developing theirs. As far as I'm concerned, they will continue to suck at the International Game the more they raid our domestic game. If they want to get serious about being a real threat on the international calendar, they should just f**k off and mind their own business. The price to pay for them is far greater than just a few less dollars in their banks accounts... it's World Cup Supremecy. They will never taste it again.

There is no doubt SL is much closer to the NRL these days - partly because the quality of SL has improved and partly because the quality of the NRL has waned.

Remember though that the overseas quota is being reduced in the coming years.

why do you think that is? ... because there are f**k all english players in good teams ...

england across all sports - cricket, league, football ... are obsessed with having the premium talent from around the world and will pay ridiculous amounts of money for it at the expense of their national team

England have a 1st grade International Team?
They are soft, and suck.

Seriously - regardless of how good you poms say the game is over there, I cannot sit for 80 minutes and watch the crap.

That said, I can happily watch our 15th and 16th team in Australia play each other.

Australian players are coming back as well now. Matt King wanted back. Trent Barrett's coming back. Then that UK INternational is playing for The Tigers next year.

The more the suck, the more they want to play in our competition, because we are so much better.

Rob Burrow ! LoL

Except that the quality of the NRL in 2008 was so bad that for the first time ever I found myself not caring whether I watched any games of a weekend.

And what does that matter. They are estimating 4 new teams in the ESL will be introduced by 2012 - that's an extra 20 quality players of our game hitting the airport.

Hoping rather than estimating would be the more accurate term - although it would be great if there were 4 more teams introduced.

At the end of the day it's up to us to find a way to keep our players rather than whinging about the fact that they are being poached.

England's best players have shown that they have nothing except scooting from dummy half when the marker isn't set.
An Australian side many thought was average has shown itself to be 30-50 points ahead of the rest of the world.
Hmmm
