Why Manly won't win the premiership

debut players often come back from origin far better players then before they went in - considering most will be picked for the first time i expect them to come back with so much more confidence - i only see it as a plus.

i really think they have the best shot of any team before them to go back to back

Depending on Brent's continued good form in 2009 i'd reckon Craig Bellamy will have changed his view on Brent Kite - he'd be picked for the origin side somewhere in the 17 if the side was picked today surely. Additionally Glen Stewart is a massive chance for a blue debut. As for the rest of the Manly chances, It's likely that the aformentioned two could be Manly's only Blue reps in 09 regardless of form or history.

Bellamy showed his hand with Kurt Gidley at the back, he doesn't appear to be a fan of Brett Stewart's style and ended up wasting him on the bench, don't be surprised if Stewart is helping out his club at origin time. Tony Minichiello, he'll need a dead set miracle.

Matt Orford's marquee years have been 2007 & 2008 yet the selectors blew the chance to add his experience in the rep clutch, instead, going for the kids at number seven in a gladiators battle. In that time Matt has guided his club through crunch semifinals, reaching the the GF twice and holding the trophy at full time last season. I can't see the selectors ever going for Matty Orford if they haven't already.

Let's be honest, guys like Whatmough, Perry and Lyon aren't favourites with state selectors either, while David Williams needs to carry on the form of 2008 to have any chance at an Origin start. Jack Elsegood had an exciting debut season but after injury in his 2nd year, his form varied from excellent to missing after that. There's plenty for David Williams to do before he gets selected.

On Menzies and Bell. The loss of a legend is always hard to cover for, and I'm also referring to where the Sea Eagles will miss the Beaver off the field. Manly's player depth to cover their 2008 personel losses however are as good as any.

I remember the slack jawed chirps about losing Ben Kennedy and then pushing away the indispensable Michael Monaghan, but people forget the legacy they leave behind, and the succession plans that have followed - it's led to Grand Final appearances and a premiership.

I don't think any right minded person could ever clearly say "such and such" team is going to win the competition in 2009, however Manly across the park in comparison to other club rosters (and barring an injury catastrophe) look like a top four team. From this position, the reigning Premiers will have a red hot deluxe chance to defend their crown.

If Minichiello's back injury doesn't have a recurrence (oh please please please, we need him to have any shot at the premiership) I would be shocked if he isn't in the NSW side, even on the wing.

Fair enough. His form was super three and four years ago winning Gold Boots and Silver trophies, but realistically in 2009 will he still have that explosive speed we all remember? Will he still have the mental confidence to back himself deluxe? I'm sure he'll always have his class, but time isn't on his side to show it.

My opinion, Mini breaking down in 2009 is like Ben Cousins hitting the powder room again... likely. The Roosters are a quality club, they should start planning for someone else, seriously.

Agreed, this could be a huge danger area. If his back craps itself again I don't have the confidence in any other of our outside backs to do a top class job.

NSW should be:-

01. Anthony Minichello
02. David Williams
03. Jamie Lyon
04. Matt Cooper
05. Jared Hayne
06. Trent Barrett
07. Matt Orford
08. Josh Perry
09. Robbie Farrah
10. Brent Kite
11. Ryan Hoffman
12. Glenn Stewart
13. Luke O'Donnell

14. Kurt Gidley
15. Willie Mason
16. Luke Bailey
17. Anthony Watmough

wat kind of selector would not choose either of the best two nsw fullbacks in the league to start at fullback?

The best has quite clearly been chosen in that list...

Sorry, I guess I should have said they'd be crazy not to choose the two current best nsw fullbacks. My mistake, as he quite clearly has chosen the best nsw fullback from 3 or 4 years ago in that list.

Kidley is wasted on the bench if there is no clear cut option at 5/8 they could pair him and Wallace but leave all the kicking to Wallace and Farah

the flag :?

thats what poofs call it in AFL. nobody calls it the flag in Rugby League

I've heard it mention on this forum too. Anyway I live in poofy territory, so it can rub off on you.:D

Anyway I thought you were a closet afl fan, or do I have the wrong guy?.
At least I don't follow afl.:p

Yeah for a game or two until fatigue sets in it's at the back end of the season when they will start to dropoff the pace..
