People can chuckle and be haughty, but Hegs will probably be the cows leading try scorer.

All of their other new signings have gone up there to retire.

Hegs has been depressed for awhile now, thats why he has enjoyed the odd coldy.

Just taking the piss Dave.... however, expecting Hegs to do a Nathan Merritt a la 2006, is a HUGE call.

As far as enjoying the odd coldy, remember that it gets pretty warm up there in Townsville...

A.M gets up on the cowboy thread on LU and spoke in glowing terms about Hegs and they tried to run him out of town.

Very rude and ungrateful if you ask me Nemsy.

At Souths we treat our new signings with kindness and respect.

If they keep dissing Hegs, A.M's dream of him returning may come true.

You see Nemsy, scurge of dwagon sheltered workshop, in life, you have to be careful what you wish for!!

Unfortunately AM, the only way Hegs would get back into a Maroons jersey, is as their team mascot...
In fact, Hegs bares a striking resemblance to Cane Toad, both in build and appearance (they're both bald for a start). He'd have to be be a shoe-in for the position... go Hegs!

Nice.

People don't seem to realise that Hegs is an absolute genius who should have been retained by us.

He was more of a genius a few years ago then he is now.
I do seem to realise that at least...

Has he been named in the Cowboys trial squad?

Yes indeed he has.

Its a tidy squad as well, all the big names are touring.

That surprises me a little, because now hegs is at risk of an pre-season injury.

Henry has proven himself to be a good coach, a maginificent pedigree in that area, if he thinks Hegs can play, Id back his judgment.

Hegs's game is more suited to the Cowboys gruntfest than to our thrusting forwards and nifty crafty backs.

Under their dull lumbering style, with the exception of Bowen and Thurston, hegs just has to do the basics ie catch, run and score.

No thinking involved, he can play on his bare instincts.

When he was a Kangaroo, that was a lot of his game. I think we tested his mind too much and things became muddled up with his off-season dramas and game mental depression.

Competition for spots at Souths these days is at its highest since I can remember. That can add a lot of pressure on a player like Hegs, confusion and risk taking resulted as he attempted to over-achieve.

Sometimes he would clear his head and realise his potential, such as the game v Manly in the first half of last year. That was the real, pristine and clear Hegs. The most impressive Premiers in rugby league history ( by score) just couldnt handle him. It was Manly against Hegs and Hegs, on his own, smashed them to pieces in the meterage stakes.

The other Hegs is the distraught and depressive Hegs. Sometimes he appeared.

The battle for Hegs mindspace, is on-going and heavy- going. Almost a Good v Evil thing.

But its all clear upstairs for Hegs now.

The light is on and Hegs is home.

AM and I might be in the minority, in supporting Hegs. But sometimes in life, you have to make a stand, even if its unpopular. The real hegs is gold, a talented and special player.

As a person and a player, I wish him well and would rejoice if he can manage to overcome the demons and progress to the great heights we all know, in our hearts, that he is entirley capable of.

I wish hed had at least one more season with us, so he can taste the glory that he helped to create.

For much of his time at Souths, Hegs has been misunderstood.

He is not a stupid oaf like Willie Mason.
He is not a club traitor like SBW.
He is not an alleged criminal like Greg Bird.
He is not a drunken lout like Gowie was.
He didnt abuse drugs like Joey Johns.

The fact that he looks pretty cool ( for a bloke) is not his fault. Dont misinterpret that as arrogance.

He was very humble and shy on fan day. He had lots of fans wanting to meet him. Nobody was impolite enough to diss him to his face. If they did, the queue to get his signature would have bashed the offender senseless.

Hegs is Ok by me and I will continue the fight to clear his name from the list of percieved bad players.

Can we move on now please?

Its the hegs thread....

We are anxiously waiting for his first big hit out for the cows.

I have to test my theory that he is coming good again.

Going to go thru a "white patch"

And I know that threatens us here a little because we will all be wanting to know why Hegs didnt perform as well as he could when he played for us.

Then we start feeling a little anxious and questioning about ourseleves and whether we have any shortcomings etc.

And thats uncomfortable and to some, they will be in denial.

But we will get some closure on this very pressing question.

You see the Hegs experiment is not just about Hegs, its about us.

And owning up to ourselves is a very tough thing to do.

But come what may, we will have a few questions answered and then its up to us whether we deal with it or go back into our shells and blame someone else.

We used to be really good at that, but since Phac and Rusty came, we are better at self-analysis.

Rusty talked "love", he wants people to have a better understanding of themselves and the club and so do I.

And I think that through Hegs, we can reach that space of cognitive self-knowingness.

Hegs may have gone, but he still has a lot to teach us, where it counts.

Feb 22 2009 1728 hrs Aust East Summer Time:-

STOP PRESS - HEGARTY SCORES MAIDEN TRY FOR THE COWBOYS IN TRIAL!!

To be confirmed but Ive heard that Shannon Hegarty had a blinder for the cows and touched down out wide in the 28th minute.

I knew this would happen!

Well done Hegsy

Seems like Hegs is on track to become all that AM and I say he will.

What great news.

In a close game, Hegs stood up, what a champion.

Am will be thrilled.

You can say what you want about Heggarty. But the TRUTH is; at Souths he was an abject failure. and that was under 2 different coaches.

The only year that he looked half decent was when he played centre in 07. That year his defence was decent, but in attack he still couldn't pass a ball or draw a man. He was on the outsie of one of the best line breakers and ball players in the game in one John Sutton and all Hegs could do most of the time was drop the ball when passed to him.

That is why he ran from dummy half all the time. He didn't have to catch or pass!

Brisbane's Israel Folau has been named the best recruit of the 2009 NRL season in an exclusive poll for today's edition of Rugby League Week magazine - and Shannon Hegarty the worst.

Now the rumour is that Heg stubbed his toe setting up a try for one of the backs.

He dummied to the right but threw a neat inside pass that was later basketballed onto a hard running forward who flicked it to a surprised back who stepped their fullback and scored under the posts.

The whole movement was started by Hegs, and he sustained a serious injury for the good of the team.

And its this type of sacrifice and excellence that had him in good stead with most of the fans at his previous club and the Kangaroo selectors.

Its that kind of passion that will no doubt see him start a new position at lock or hooker for the cows as time marches on.

Souths have Issac Luke and the Cows will have their Issac in Hegs.

And there is no doubt as a matter of cold hard fact that Hegs played better than Issac against Manly. Im pretty sure he was players player in that match, even in a losing side.

It would have been 50-nil without Hegs that day.

But Hegs would have rather that we won the game, no doubt about that.

When he shows his true colours, he wont last long.

Word is that Heg's is recovering well from injury.

Its a real pity some of those cowboys fans are dissing him. They have no idea really.
