Parramatta winger Eric Grothe, said there was no chance he would sign a contract that restricted him drinking.
"No, I like having a beer after a game," Grothe said.
"I think if you're an idiot, you're an idiot.
"If you are going to drink and start fights and that, that's you and you shouldn't drink ... it comes down to the individual."
Grothe's Eels teammate Brett Finch, when quizzed on the issue snapped: "How old are you? I'm 27 so, are you old enough to make decisions about alcohol?
"Because I think I'm old enough and mature enough so it's an individual responsibility for everyone in society."

100% right.... the stance taken by Gould and Fitzgerald is totally beyond reason and unworkable. Provided they are not writing themselves off two or three days before a game I have little issue with them drinking during a season.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere though and they need to take responsiblity for their own actions.

My take on this is that they are professional athletes who get paid to perform at the highest level. It is proven that alcohol inhibits muscle recovery and for that very reason they should be prevented from drinking any booze 24 hours after the game. I certainly don't want them tanked in the days leading up to a game either.

I think each individual club has the right to put it's own rules in place.

They're paying the players good money to perform at a high level and look after their fitness.

That being said, bans or even restrictions that are simply placed on players from above won't work. Whatever clubs do has to be done with the players.

A blanket ban is always going to struggle.... outside of blood testing them everyday they turn up to training, they can't possibly babysit them 24/7 and make sure they don't drink.

If they said to the players we'd like you not to drink the night after a game and in the very minimum two days (zero alcohol for those recovering from injury) before the next then I think MOST players could live within those restrictions....

those who behave themselves on the sauce shouldn't be punished, it's as simple as that.

weed out the blokes who can't handle it but don't punish the others.

I would say about 95% of NRL players are responsible drinkers, its the 5% that arent that give the sport a bad name. The only thing I think some of the boys need is a lesson on responsible drinking, which I am sure the NRL were doing anyway.:?

I'd say there might be a bigger diference in those numbers..... due to playing commitments, travel and the like most players rarely would drink every night of the week. When they do get a chance a good deal of them drink excessively in a short amount of time.

Some of the older players can handle it, younger players may not be as seasoned drinkers as the older players....... the NRL are trying to teach responsible drinking but it is up to the players themselves to respond and practise it.

I am just saying there are more that dont get in trouble than who do . And how many of us dont drink for a while and then drink to excess at say a party or event . I know I am not in the public eye like they are,but even though they are elite athletes they still deserve to let their hair down every now and then.

It could also be a case of there are more we hear about getting in to trouble than what those that don't.

If my boss said I couldn't have a beer after work, I'd get another job.

I gotta say that whilst it is sad that the NRL are again living up to their boofhead, alcho, womanizer image in the press yet again. I'm very pleased that it's not our team this time around.

It is sad, but it's Manly so not too sad...... and yes it feels so much better that it isn't our team.

Quite simple really.

1 Clause.: "If you are proved at fault and/or Guilty of any Alcohol related Incident or Indiscretion, your contract will be Terminated Immediately with no claim for compensation or repatriation on the Clubs behalf"

FFS these guys are meant to be grown adults. Like anyone else in society and regardless of their celebrity standing in society, they should be held responsible with the relevant enforcement agencies.

Prohibition is a crime against civil liberty. Not to mention it would be ridiculous and impossible to monitor and thus unenforceable. Ban all mobile phones too then, cause some ppl may use them to co-ordinate a bank robbery. The list could be endless.

There are plenty of substances that are banned from an athletes point of view. I don't see swimmers crying foul of their civil liberties because they can't take a codral.

Whilst I don't advocate a booze ban, I think there is a time and place for everything and these athletes need to be more intelligent about what they put in their bodies and when.

Well that's just moronic; products like that are on the IOC banned list because of their ingredients and most are also banned by the NRL for the same reasons.
Swimmers aren't banned from drinking by their teams, they make a personal choice to refrain because they are professionals and as adults have the right to do so. RL players should be no different; idiots will always be idiots!!!

You've quoted me out of context. I was commenting on Rams statement about "crimes against civil liberty."
