Use of Nicknames in NRL

I think now more than ever teams are always referred to by their mascot name e.g Broncos, Bulldogs etc

You hear it in the footy show. Read it in the paper. See it everywhere. Teams are hardly ever referred to by their district name. You might hear their full name a bit but teams are just referred to by their nicknames.

Where did the loss in pride of your district come from? The NRL suburban teams in Sydney actually represent an area while in the AFL they don't mean sh*t yet teams are constantly referred to by their suburban/city name whenever you hear the AFL being shoved down our throats during the sports bulletin or advertising.

Why did the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs change their name to just "Bulldogs"? It has been like that for 10 years now and 99% of the time its just "Bulldogs" What part of Sydney is the suburbs Bulldogs located?

Wests Tigers. It's usually just Tigers or West Tigers. Never hear anyway just say Wests

Never hear anyway call Easts Sydney, its just "The Sydney Roosters" or "The Roosters"

Warriors are the same as above teams mentioned.

At this rate NRL will turn into the super 14 with teams just referred to by their mascot name

i call em by the "mascot" name. but dont see it as a big issue.

Atleast those above teams get called the right name not like Melbourne "storms"

The tipping comp I'm in says Storms when the tips get sent out and it drives me crazy. My boss even says "Storms", I mean it isn't hard. I'm not what you would consider a fan of Melbourne so I can only imagine how annoying it must be for you guys.

I tend to agree, I like calling a team by its district name for the most part.

Likewise, I call the doggies "Canterbury" and Drags "St george". Thankfully I think some of the marketing guru's are starting to realise what makes the game unique is our tribal element. Thus the Canterbury going back to a better logo next year incorporating 1935 and CB.

yes, but you're pretty dense.

Its all about marketing, the district means nothing, the franchise name means everything..

Of course I am sweetheart  Thick as two planks ol me!

A mix between the two can't hurt can it? I mean, how marketable is a Rooster on its own?

Tend to agree with OzBash.

In Sydney, which is so bloody regionalised it's not funny, it doesn't necessarily pay to have a district name. If the NSWRL stayed in the inner suburbs like the VFL, maybe, but it doesn't really work.

for us, the NZ Warriors is dumb, our starting line up is more than half Aussie.

When we talk about teams here, its usually/mostly the franchise name. Much simpler.

That's stupid.

Clearly works in Soccer. Teams like Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.. where are those teams nick names?

I don't understand why Eastern Suburbs and Canterbury-Bankstown dropped their historical names after 90 years for a mascot.

These teams believed that mass-mergers and relocations were on the cards so they tried to rebrand themselves as "Sydney" rather than be associated with their traditional turf. This was done in a vain hope that other teams would be forced to go elsewhere but the "Sydney" teams would stay.

Short-sighted idiots. Canterbury went one better by leaving the comp altogether.

crap, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man U  are their names.

Easts and Cant/Bankstown adopted the nicknames as a marketing ploy and thats all the younger generation of fans know them as.

The younger gen of fans are the next traditionalists.

Probably because teams realised that limiting yourself to a small catchment of a suburb was not the way to go to become a world class sporting organisation. The Warriors are called NZ to appeal to a whole country let alone a single suburb.I do agree though that clubs should always have a geographical point of reference in their name, even if just Sydney.

To be fair, we're the only club that officially isn't known by a geographic location anymore. Every other team is... and even then commentators and such still use the old names sparingly.

There has been a concerted effort by the NRL itself to push referring to teams by their nicknames. The media are simply being compliant. Myself, I generally prefer the geographical name.

What sh*ts me most though is referring to a team by their sponsor and their nickname, often dropping the geographical name, e.g. Jetstar Titans, St. George Bank Dragons.

Hi Fraser, no one refers to them as Wests because their correct name is Wests Tigers, Tigers is not just the emblem/logo but forms part of the actual name of the club…
