Managers are necessary evils. Players would be unable to deal with contracts (especially when it branches out to third parties) and the distraction could affect performance. A lack of managers could increase tension between player and Club during the negotiation period etc.

And yes, tension could increase. At least with managers, players can distance themselves from the situation. I'm sure Clubs don't take it out on players when their managers are...let's say aggressive...just as I'm sure players don't take it out on Clubs who are pushing hard. Because they're distanced from the situation.
Make a player have to deal with this themselves, however, and you might - might - have a different story.
