Why aren't they kicked each time a team has a chance?

Each and every single time?

It is beyond me why this is not a high priority tactic for every team.

you know what else is never used. during the 20 metre restart, noone ever goes for that dropout that if it goes out, they get the ball bak. sherwin used to do it all the time. cant remember any doin it since

You probably don't remember anyone doing it because i'm pretty sure they got rid of the optional restart rule years ago.

Really? I was sure they got rid of it. If not, then it i agree it is surprising more teams don't try it.

Farah did it once earlier in the year, can't remember which round, but he got the ball back from it.

has to be one of the dumbest posts

you say it doesn't happen enough but then say you wouldn't know if it did because you don't watch many games

and teams won't do it just for the f**k of it and risk losing possesion of the ball unles it's necessary or the wingers aren't back

stick to AFL

with the optional restart from the 20 dose it have to be a drop kick I swore that was only if the penalty kick went dead after missing. I thought the optional restart was any kick that found went into touch, I remember someone doing around 2000-2001 for parramatta and it didn't actually go dead but the winger was tackles into touch after having to slide and regather.

Yeah I remember seeing Kimmorley or Ennis send it down field against the Rabbits I think. It came off but at the time seemed pretty pointless. If the wingers aren't back I think it should be tried more often, but it's a game of possession.

what more teams should be trying is getting the ball back from the kickoff by grubbing it 10-20metres into touch

First in the Tigers forum and now here, stop stealing my god damn posts.

But yeah, if you just find a bit of space between people awaiting the kick, belt the ball as hard as you can in that direction towards the sideline. Chances are it'll either go out on the bounce or they'll play at it and make a mistake.

Its actually a punt not a dropkick.

How does the amount of 40/20s this year compare to previous years? It feels like there are more 40/20s this year.. or maybe that's only because i'm paying more attention

It's definitely still in use, as mentioned Kimmorley and Farah have used it this year. It is a punt, and the ball can only bounce once I think before going over the sideline, or it can go out on the full I think from a 20m tap, that's why it's called an optional restart or optional tap.
