And Sydney Harbour has some of the highest levels of mercury and other heavy metals of any waterway in the country. The site around the Olympic arena is still being reclaimed because the massive levels of heavy metals and other toxins were so high that nothing could live there. Botany Bay and surrounding areas have only recently recovered from similar toxicity. Bondi Beach has dangerously high faecal levels (human, I might add) because a sewerage pump ends only a couple of hundred metres offshore. Fish from the coastal lagoons such as Manly are considered inedible because of heavy metal toxicity....need I go on?
