No good options..
Saturday is still AFL Grand Final day, that won't help with crowds I would imagine.
Moving it so Sydney would get no crowd.
Moving it to Brisbane will get you 52,000 Brisbane supports and 2 Melbourne ones.

Sunday an option?

Yeah I forgot to add that the MCG is not an option with the AFL grand final being played on Saturday, and Olympic park isn't a suitable venue for a prelim final.

Where do you get the idea that the Storm are scheduled to play on the Friday? The draw doesn't define which team winning in week one plays on which night in week 3. The NRL have complete discretion as to which game is played on which night. The only thing that would be (virtually) locked is the two timeslots as that would affect both domestic and international television agreements.

No way they would ever move it to Sydney and Brisbane...

IMO, the best option is to play it on Sunday afternoon.

The realistic option is they'll move it to Saturday Night.

The "if NRL had some balls" option is they would try and kick the VFL out because the NRL is undoubtedly the bigger game in town.

Last year I recall Melbourne Victory kicked out the AFL NAB Cup for the A-League Grand Final.

id just move it to sunday... same as what they did in 2007

In 2007 Sunday finals were in the schedule.

As part of the compromise with Ch 9 to have the GF played at 5pm, the NRL went with all night finals in week 2 and 3.

They will not be playing it on a Sunday, although I personally think they should.

It will be in Melbourne for sure. I'd suspect the Saturday night with the venue clash - could be a rowdy crowd after the AFL Grand Final Day too!

then play it Sunday night.... or play it Sunday afternoon and CH9 can screen it delayed.

im sure a compromise could be made...

Given there will be two Victorian teams in the AFL grand final, Sunday seems the only logical day if they can't unseat the VFL. I think I'd go if that was the case.

I'd love to see the NRL and Ch 9 show some flexibility on this and do everything in their powers to get the Storm prelim shifted to Sunday arvo. Play the Dogs' prelim on Sat night.

We can all play together. Make the VFL grand final the undercard to the Storm game.

Storm happy to go behind AFL grand final

By Todd Balym AAP Sun, 13 Sep 2009 19:11:24

Melbourne chief executive Brian Waldron says he is excited by the prospect of selling a rugby league preliminary final to Victorians on the same day as the AFL grand final.

The Storm secured an NRL preliminary final after Parramatta upset minor premiers St George Illawarra on Sunday to gift Melbourne a free passage to host a grand final qualifier at Etihad Stadium.

But the Docklands venue is booked for the VFL grand final on Friday September 25, meaning the Storm must play their game on the Saturday evening - only hours after the AFL decider is completed at the MCG.

With a guaranteed all-Victorian AFL grand final in the making, the Storm will at least benefit by hosting one of the NRL's best supported teams with the winner of Brisbane and St George Illawarra to face Melbourne for a place in the decider.

"We are certainly surprised but we will take it," said Waldron of the Storm's home preliminary final.

"The AFL grand final is during the day, it is a fantastic opportunity for all those people who have come in from out of town to come straight across the bridge and watch ourselves and whoever it is put on what no doubt will be an epic final.

"I think it's a great thing to have an opportunity to attract a lot of visitors from out of town to a double header with the AFL grand final and a Melbourne Storm preliminary final against a very worthwhile opponent."

Waldron said he would approach the NRL about special promotions to help sell the game in what would no doubt be a difficult local market saturated with AFL coverage.

"Hopefully we can put in place in conjunction with the NRL a media program that provides enormous opportunity for people to come along and experience what should be a great contest no matter who we play," he said.

"The experience of both should be fantastic, who knows what we could do.

"We can attract a healthy audience and that is the most important thing."
