2GB, TripleM and ABC renew Radio rights

NRL Tue, 22 Sep 2009 13:47:00

The National Rugby has today announced that 2GB has secured the exclusive commercial radio rights for Telstra Premiership and ARL matches for a further three seasons.

The ABC has again secured rights to broadcast matches with Austereo’s Triple M retaining the commercial rights to Monday Night Football.

The agreements guarantee Rugby League will have a voice on the country’s most influential commercial network through 2GB, national and international coverage through the ABC and FM exposure through Triple M.

2GB’s Continuous Call team will broadcast over fifteen hours of Rugby League commentary across Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week.

The ABC, whose digital network will now take Rugby League to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, will broadcast matches on Friday, Saturday, Saturday evening and selected Monday night matches (broadcasts restricted to matches involving regional teams and to be transmitted only within those regions).

Triple M has unveiled plans to expand its commercial Monday night coverage, increasing its overall commitment to Rugby League.

All broadcasts will be accessible through www.nrl.com in 2010.

“The success of the Continuous Call team speaks for itself,” National Rugby League Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“The NRL Partnership is pleased to be continuing the relationship – one which has seen substantial growth in the commercial value of Rugby League.

“While 2GB enjoys a large network audience in its own right, the combination of it and the ABC ensures that fans have both choice and a massive reach that will increase with the news that all broadcasts will now be available through nrl.com in 2010.

“Triple M has added an important element through FM audiences and the game’s profile across the three networks remains incredibly strong.”

I don't mind the CC Team or Triple M or ABC even, but to be perfectly frank, this is DUMB. Open it up like the AFL, give the consumers a choice!

Graeme Hughes (2SM) will be almight pissed off today. He dreams to call league games again, yet Gallop shuts him down every three years.

2gb was always going to get the rights there ratings are HUGE and they when the NRL would of looked at them they would of realised it was the best option.

Just because some of you clowns dont like the CCTeam alot of people actually do

Is that you Raaaaayyyy? My problem isn't only the callers (even though they are plebs) but the fact that they don't call the late Saturday game. Oh and the callers are plebs. And their show is sh*t. And I'd rather more options than Hadley.

Not liking the CC team is irrelevant.
Its about options for the consumer.

The agreement should be reached on the proviso that there is somehow access to the second Friday game. When both states go with the same game live on Nine, 2GB is at the behest of the networks to broadcast it, as is ABC - and then we're left with NO live coverage anywhere in Australia of the second Friday fixture.

Its for 3 years... seems they are really trying to build up 2013 as the year to sell all rights at the same time. The next media deal better be friken huge

I love how the NRL press release is written in the way that this is a good thing. It'll be the same for when the TV rights comes up and "Channel 9 will have secured the long-term future for rugby league" or some rubbish like that.

Is this some kind of sick joke from the NRL? I’ve bet that Saturday 7.30pm games are not part of this “so called” 15 hours of Rugby League commentary. David probably thinks Raaay’s silly jingles are Rugby League commentary. Again, if this is such a great deal, why wasn't the $ figure mentioned? The ABC gives them nothing for radio rights, so basically the ABC is subsidising the NRL to provide them with a (close to) full service. Can't wait to see who 2MMM get to take their call.
