Adrian Purtell has signed with Penrith for 2 years, Surely that has to free up some cash to sign a good Half.

IS there a good half available?

and how much money has been freed up? Some say we will be still paying Purts some of his wage which would come of our cap.

That could be true...but it's one thing I think that stinks about the cap. If we release him? Why should he still be under our cap? Bollocks to me...

I remember at one stage the tigers picked up payten for a steal as he was still being paid by Canberra and the Roosters(?).

From what i understand he was on a generous contract. I don't know if they're available but what about Tim Smith? I also rate Matt Head even though he's had injuries i think he's a real halfback. McCrone was okay at the back end of the season but is he really a halfback?

Tim Smith is training with the Broncos although that doesnt mean they have an exclusive to sign him. He has had alcohol issues but seems to have it all in check lately, I wouldnt say no completely to him but I do think McCrone will be a better halfback even though he probably is better suited to 5/8

Yeah that's what I was getting at he's really a 5/8. He did a better job than Herbert though and he's still young. Surely we would be able to offer Tim Smith more than the Broncos and with Wallace in front of him plus offer a better chance in 1st grade.

I think the club is actually worse off without purtel. This is now the worst backline depth I've ever seen.

Having to rely soley on teenagers, albeit with enormous potentional, for the entire season is scary.
Dugan -19
Croker -19
Vidot - 19
Carney - 21
Then there is Monaghan who is getting worse every game.

I hate the idea of pushing thompson, thurling, harrison into the centres but that is all there is.

Kelly isn't a footballer, Milne can only play fullback and Drury Low has alot of improving to do before he can every be considered.

No wonder Logan was re-signed or the team might have been mistaken for a highschool team.

Im not upset that Purts has left he is way down the pecking order below the rookies. The person who we may rue leaving is Phil. but Im happy to show faith in the young guys.
If Monas is used right eg on the wing , I think he will get back to his best.

Milne can always be used as a winger , I think with his Fg experience now we should see a massive improvement since he last played there.
I also think Stuart will get a run in Fg sometime next year , before Low as you have said needs to improve.

And thompson in the centres isnt that bad , he was menacing there in the latter part of the season. But he wouldnt be a 1st choice there obviously.

It's just ridiculous that the club has just let him go without replacing him. He could always have been offloaded next season after the youngsters have had a full season under their belts.

It's just a very dumb move unless Purtel has pleaded to be let go.

I think we have enough depth to get by in the outside backs. I'd rather put a back rower at centre and shift a centre or fullback to the wing if we had injuries. There's no point playing guys like Purtell or Kelly for that matter if they are only going to f**k up. They did the right thing the bloke was a liability on the field and finacially for the club.

I think these young guys pushing for selection is going to bring best out of Monas and make him rise his game and also he will want to keep up with these guy to prove to himself that hes still can perform at rep level.

It is scary having to rely on teenages who can be inconsistent but we can't keep a guy like Purtell who was on around a 200k salary at SL for most of the season. Milne started off as a winger so he could start playing there again. After him we have to hope the youngsters maintain form or some of the backup like Stuart, Brophy, Low can make the step up. And there are some other guys in u20 that are built for the next level like Matt Ward and Sauiluma.
