Todays England game against the French was my first real chance to see Burgess play.

Let me say first that the standard of play by the poms was pretty ordinary. There first half display bordered on pathetic. Yes they did play better in the 2nd half but that was made to look better because the French were dying on there run. If the poms contimue to play like they did today they will not win another game in this tournament.

But back to Burgess. As I said this was the first real chance I have had to watch him play. I was very keen to see him play if he was anywhere near the player all the hype made him out to be.

NOw you can't base any sort decision on a players ability on just one game and I am not here to do that. I just want to put forward my views on how I thought he played.

He was no where near the poms best forward. I thought that was Ellis. For me Burgess had a very quiet game. Doing very little in attack and defense. For a guy who some say is the best forward in the world I thought he did nothing to show this. Save for one very good run in the last 5 minutes of the game he did not scare the French defense. As for his defense, well he was always around the ball to make a tackle. But he always seemed to be the second man in the tackle. For a guy of his size and supposed ability I expected him to terrorise the French. But he didn't.

He has two games remaining in the tournament against the heavy weights, Australia and NZ. I would expect to see some improvement in those games.

Correct!!

He didn't have a great game but it's only ONE game in a very long career that he has ahead of him.

He's an international and he's f**king brilliant and we've signed him.

That's enough for me.

I think that his coming off an injury, injuried shoulder, I think I remember reading it some where.... and that he had to prove match fitness, I think that he just didnt want to lose his position in the team. ...and that he was just having a run

Well he was outstanding last night. Besides a few early mistakes he dragged a clinically dead England off the floor and almost inspired them to beat the Aussies. Scored tries, saved tries and put on some nice shots.

If he can be inspired in an old England jumper imagine what the great Bunnies stripe could do!

Last night was the first time i had a chance to see him play as well.
Very mobile for a big bloke & he just keeps backing up.
He looks like he has the ability to make a big difference to Souths next year.

Your mother did a good job naming you Mong. For a team that was on the verge of being slaughtered, yes losing by 10 was a fantastic result, any league fan could see that numbnuts

I am NOT a Souths supporter and I have to admit I was death riding Burgess, but he DID have a great game.

IMO though he didnt have a great game AS A PROP. He was nowhere to be seen in the trenches where the hard work was being done, but he did show some great hands, a good hit and good skills.

I said it when he signed for Souths and i'll say it again: Sam Burgess is an excellent prop forward, but he's even better in the second row.

I wouldnt be treating him like a stranger...

Once he puts on that jersey and steps up the gear, he could well be one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

All aboard the Burge-o train.

I'd imagine Sth's will play him at 2nd row. Looks a great prospect.

Sure does Red.

I can see he and Dave Taylor building up an enormous rapport where the performances of either will spur the other on to better things.

Both of them at the top of their respective games at the same time will be a sight to behold.

Must say he was very impressive against the Roos, was getting involved in everything. Can't wait to see him in the NRL.
