Todd Carney: where is he going to be playing?

Past history or 'back in the day' suggests we have some knowledgeable NRL fans from the Roosters chook pen on LU. I want some opinions, where is Carney going to be lining up in 2010?

Is he likely to stay at fullback and play a role similar to that of Lockyer when he attacked from fullback?

Will we see a Pearce and Carney pairing with Anasta at lock?

I was fortunate to be at the game on Sunday and this kid yet again just impressed me. Born to play the game. I sincerely hope he can put the past behind him and turn in the superstar his potential suggests he will be.

He was wasted at fullback don't you think?
I reckon he will wear the No6 eventually with Anasta slotting in at lock but I think Smithy is determined to continue the experiment in the short term. Carney wasn't tested at fullback on the weekend and I'm worried that teams will bomb the hell out of him.

This is a good problem to have.
Depth at fullback and 5/8 can't hurt.
I just hope the right balance is found earlier in the season rather than later.

I get the feeling that he will play a "behind the line" in attack role feeding from broken play situations and coming up to take advantage of retreating defensive lines. Running into the action when needed, but not being the main go to man.

This will give him a bit of space and allow him to exploit other sides.

But I think when defending he may come into the line in the 5/8th position and Mini or Perrett will drop back to defend.

If they do this and the other team misplaces a pass Carney will be up in the line to exploit the situation

I am completely guessing, but that's what I'd like to see. A full back, but not in the traditional sense.

Wasted is perhaps the wrong word, but when he moved closer to the action you got the feelin something was always going to happen. He complimented Pearce well and I believe the Roosters have a halves combination that could rival just about any teams if they stay healthy and out of trouble.

IMO, I think the Roosters would be strongest if they lined up like this: 1 - Minichiello, 6 - Carney, 7 - Pearce, 13 - Anasta, 9 - Aubusson

Five very good to excellent players in the five key positions. Couple that with a strong pack, the Roosters will surprise in 2010.

To my mind Carney should play in the halves, Pierce is now starting to attain the promise the club has been expecting him to show, which assures him the no.7 Ilike Carney at no.6 which leaves Anasta a guy be chosen at five eighth at almost any club in the world, yet lacks experience in any other position. This problem must have been obvious to all at the Roosters, while chasing Carneys signature. I understand Smith's objective to place all three players in attacking positions, and hope it works, if not, Carney at6 Pierce7 Anasta 13. would prefer Jones as hooker, Ithink he offers more in attack.

I think he will play fullback its seems Smith is set on that position with Carney but i think its strange to play him there when your carrying a former Australian Fullback in Mini and a New Zealand Test Fullback in Perrett.

Just on a different note did anyone see how Williamson and Symonds went for Newtown last week?

They didn't play for Newtown they played in a Roosters second team that played against one of the West tigers feeder teams at Leichart on Saturday night.
By the way the Roosters side won 34 to 12

With Carney I am pretty sure Brian Smith will start him at FB and if it is not a success he will move into the halves with Pearce

Playing Anasta at lock would be a mistake - he is not enough of a worker.
You know the problem the Roosters will suffer ? The same one Souths did.
Trying to fit 4 players into 3 positons - In Souths case it was ( Sandow/Sutton/Wing/Luke )

Roosters will be ( Carney/Pearce/Anasta/Minichello)

slamminsam, the Roosters lack a genuine utility of Wings class so they dont have the options whereas Souths did so i would put that particular problem down to Jason Taylors miss-management.
