Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens extends stay at joint-venture club

By David Beniuk
March 26, 2010 Tim Sheens will remain at the helm of the Wests Tigers until the end of 2011 after extending his contract with the NRL club for a further 12 months.
The NRL's longest-serving coach, having overseen 595 games and won four premierships since debuting with Penrith in 1984, the 59-year-old says he will quit if success doesn't come in the next two seasons.
"I asked for a year, not any longer than that, to work with this group,'' he said after Wests Tigers' 23-12 win over Parramatta.
"If I can't get it to happen then I won't be here and I'd stand down myself on that basis.''
He said the move would remove speculation about the job, which had been linked to Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart.
"We're not thinking this year about who's going to be coaching and the speculation, which this season doesn't need,'' he said.
'' ... It doesn't guarantee I'm going to be there, we've still got to do the job.''
Sheens said the deal had been done on Friday afternoon over coffee with Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys.
Humphreys agreed Sheens' request for only a 12-month extension meant he had squarely put the pressure on himself to succeed.
"I read a bit into that,'' he said.
"Tim understands better than anyone that this is a results-orientated business.
"We know we need to take that next step and I think he is challenging himself somewhat in that.''
Humphreys said Sheens, who guided the Tigers to an inaugural premiership in 2005 but has failed to take them to the finals since, had an ability to stay fresh despite his 26 years at Penrith, Canberra, North Queensland and the Tigers.
"I really don't think it's an age thing with Tim because mentally I think he's the youngest senior executive we've got around the place because he keeps himself very fresh,'' Humphreys said.
Captain Robbie Farah also welcomed the signing, which comes on top of those of Benji Marshall, Keith Galloway and Robert Lui this year.
"Tim's a coach that all of us players respect and he's a reason why a lot of us have re-signed,'' Farah said.
"It gives the club great stability.''

I'm a big critic, but it's only a one year deal and if we don't get to the finals this season I expect him gone.

If he takes us to the finals then happy to see him stay on another year. As Humphries said its a results orientated business and if that side can't make the top 8 of a 16 team comp then something is seriously wrong.

Why is that bad? Isnt he a good coach?
Not makin the finals since 2005 certainly isnt the coaches fault..
Prince > gone
Benji > only starting to show form again back end of last season and this season.
Forward pac> had 3 bad years IMO.

You can only do so much with his style of coaching..
This season they look to be sharp and ready to take on the top 4..

How can anything be blamed on Sheens??

Apologists out in force again.

It isn't just the last 4 years, its the last 15 years which he has failed to take a team to the semis, bar one year.

Its the constant refusal to admit he's made a mistake, and change his game plan accordingly.

Its him constantly selecting players out of position, when even members of this very forum can see they should be playing elsewhere.

He runs this club, and its going to be hard to progress untill he leaves.

All that being said , he had done his research and thoroughly out coached Daniel last night . And Anderson is a world class coach , so old Sheens has a few tricks in his bag no risk .

the tigers fans can only hold onto the hope this year, sheens is involved in a sex scandal or match fixing and gets an early retirement...because it seems you'll have to hold onto the old man for a little while longer

Yes it is.

he and his staff should have recruited better.

Well change it!

This season they look to be sharp and ready to take on the top 4..

lol, last week they were useless, now they're top 4 contendors again. It's been the same story for years. World beaters one week, spoon contenders the next. Will probably finish 9th again.

How can anything be blamed on Sheens??

Because he's in charge!

See this is what I can't stand. When the Tigers win, its Sheens outcoaching Anderson.

But last week when they lost to the Roosters, its all the players fault and how they are lazy in defence, and SHeens gets off scot-free.

Sheens outcoaches Anderson? give me a break.

The fact our defence was stiff and Benji was back to his best didn't contribute to any of this?

makes sense. i'd have given him this year and then seen what happens. almost any other team he'd already be out, it's hard to believe that even after winning a comp the tigers organisation still accepts less than mediocrity.

Pointless statement mate . What i hate is when the Tigers win its all the players , when they lose it's all somehow Tim Sheens fault...

:roll:But with that mentality all coaches do nothing to contribute anything ever , why have them at all?? . Of course he bloody out coached Anderson , theres no doubt look at the scoreboard . I think you guys underestimate the role of a coach or don't understand what a coach does . Have you ever played Football ?

Wouldn't have anything to do with Moltzen having to move away from fullback (a position which everyone knows he is sh*t at, except the 'supercoach'), would it? Wouldn't have anything to do with Fulton and Gibbs coming back from injury? Outcoached my arse.

Look at how someone like Bronson Harrison has kicked on since leaving the Tigers. We've always had the players to make the top 8, but have continually missed out, who is to blame? FFS even Souths change coach when they miss the 8 aa few years in a row.

The tigers win last night had far more to do with Marshall being in top form and the forwards actually having a dig, rather than anything Sheens did.
