phil goulds idea

philis gould came up with a reasonable idea earlier....he basically said that if you get the melbourne storm back inline with the $4.1million salary cap by getting rid of some players then they should be allowed to compete for competition points again (saving the season & the franchise)....or else if they carry on playing with the same "illegal" team then every team the storm beat would be able to lodge a complaint...

so by getting rid of 2 of inglis, slater, smith & cronk should straighten out the situation cap-wise

what does everyone reckon??

This has been discussed ad nauseum...

But here are problem with that:

- Players who are cut loose will struggle to find new clubs for this year. These will be low-middle earners, not the big names.
- This disadvantages teams who played Melbourne with their $4.8M dollar roster side and lost, or won but not by as many as they could have.

Melbourne knew the rules before hand, they should be (and have been) punished accordingly.

If they cut (or loan out) the players, they wont have broken any rules this year!

Other than breaking the basic rule that you're not allowed to give payments to players above what you've registered with the NRL...

f**k 'em, punish 'em, and maybe players and their managers won't be so greedy in trying to extract every little cent they can out of their club contracts in future, before signing on for what is a 'decent enough' wage?

The current punishment disadvantages teams that have already played the Storm even more as now the Storm have absolutley nothing to play for. Players at Melbourne won't risk niggling injuries in nothing burger games. who knows where the Storm players are at or if they are giving 100%.

And maybe a loan arrangment could be worked out where by the Storm still pays the wage bill for the season but $700K of extra players are loaned to the clubs that finished last and second last in 2009. Just an idea and it's better than what the NRL's smash and destroy the whole season for everyone idea. This way no player gets cut, other clubs are assisted and the Storm can at least play in this years competition to at the very least avoid the spoon.

I can't believe that a club can introduce so many young kids into the NRL kids like Slater, Smith, Cronk, Inglis, Folau, Blair, Chambers, Tomane, etc, some of which they have lost to other clubs, all of which they alone developed from never heard of's to Australian Reps or house hold names. And then get punished in such a way as this by a system that doesn't reward producing and developing great players in a fantastic system. Instead we as a game with our current policies are destroying this system that has created champion players from nothing.

It's not as though the Storm bought these players for the incredible amounts from other clubs, they developed these players from kids. The system is garbage, yeah the Storm cheated the system but crikey it's a terrible policy, and what a punishment. It's so short sighted.

How far are they going to go, does Billy Slater need to give his Clive Churchill medal back, the same Billy Slater who a few years back was riding track work and is now arguably the greatest fullback of the limited tackle era? The guy who went from nothing to hero while developing his skills under the guidance of the Storm.

The sad joke is that our games stakeholders have flattened the Storm with an incredible the level of punishment that simply in defence of a ridiculous system that doesn't reward development or loyalty, but instead purchase and squander.

And I do not support the Storm, I support Manly.

The NRL's punishment recognises that it will take the Storm the rest of the year to work out what to do and get below the cap.

Gould the dumb f**k thinks they can get below the cap in two weeks... you can't cut players who you've put under contract, and by simply not playing one or two, it defeats the purpose of having a cap for the squad. The cap should stop clubs from stockpiling/not playing players to prevent other clubs getting a chance at them too.

i'm sure your heart is bleeding.....trust me they won't struggle to find new clubs...plus if it's a case of getting rid of 2 top earners or 6 middle earners...they are'nt going to throw out the 6 are they? they won't have a squad left..

as gould said...give the teams melbourne have already beat this season the 2 points back and as of sunday (or whenever they sort it out) the storm start on ZERO points..

Here's a loan idea... loan the Storm players to the teams in the A grade comp in Melbourne.

Players still get paid, players still play football, players still promote league in Melbourne. Give byes out to teams due to play the Storm, and reinstate the two points to those teams that have already lost to the cheats.

Only trouble is Fox Sports has the game by the balls and wouldn't cop one less game per weekend. But cutting the cheating merkins from the comp for the season until they get their house in order would have been the only fair way.

agree
I also think the no points for the year is a stupid idea as well, the Nrl could have suspended them from the remainder of the 2010 comp & have them compliant with the salary cap at the start of the 2011 season,

with the rest of the comp do a re-draw for the rest of the season there are still 20 weeks left play everyone once and 3 bye weekends for Origin with a full season tv schedule in place as well

they wont be suspened from the comp and thats a stupid idea, they should be heavily penailsed and forced to start from a massive negative points level lets say negative 16 (the warriors started on minus 4 in 2006) and that will show character to at least see if you you can play well enough to get yourself out of the red

what gould didnt think about, would the opposition prefer to play a fullstrength storm and see how they stack up against an finals type opponent or play a weak team, which gives them false hope.

Wouldn't work as he explained it last night.

As the released players would have to be replaced by others on at least the minimum NRL wage. That and it goes back to the reason for being to assemble the depth they have is that they were cheating. Some players undoubtedly took less money to stay or go there because of the players they had there which was because of their cheating.

How do you think the RLPA will go seeing players who have what they believe are legally binding contracts 'axed'. Even if you pay them out (which Melbourne can't afford given they've lost considerable sponsor money), why should they be without the chance of playing first grade and getting media representation from game appearances to build their profile for their next potential contract negotiation?

Very short-sighted, and very unreasonable on the players.

Lest you also remember, that in order to be able to compete, all clubs MUST register 25 players, and the minimum payment is $55,000. Even if you could sack a player from his contract, as unconscionable as that would be in itself, and say that player was on $120,000, you are only gaining $65,000 back. It's a long way to find $700,000.

A few problems here

* Our sponsorship partners are paying to have their product advertised in NSW, QLD, VIC and NZ. If Melbourne don't play, I would be fairly certain that the nature of the agreements for the national sponsorship deals have changed substantially and there could be grounds for termination of those sponsorship rights. That'd be great for the game, wouldn't it?
* Why shouldn't the Storm players be allowed to keep their market value up by being on TV week-in week-out? Not only are these guys scrapping for Origin and Test duties, they are scrapping for future contracts. Playing for Geelong Gibberers isn't going to help out the lower ranked fringe players like Hep Cahill or Ryan Hinchcliffe to help them find a contract for 2011, is it?
* Fox rightly is entitled, by their media contract to broadcast 5 live games, Channel 9 1 live and 2 delayed games. Neither entity is going to give up the revenues created by advertisements in those key slots to drop a game. Fox is not going to give up lost subscriptions as their product is less expansive.

Never, ever going to be close to working. The current punishment and situation is the only reasonable and tenable solution.

The solution is simple, the Storm pays for them to play at another team this year. And to be fair they can only go to teams who will have the space to pay them from 2011 onwards.
