Vidot, McCrone and Picker back for Raiders

11/05/2010 2:43:22 PM

The Canberra Raiders will welcome back Josh McCrone, Daniel Vidot and Joe Picker for their match against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night at Canberra Stadium.
McCrone returns from a groin injury and replaces Marc Herbert who injured his ankle at training last week, Daniel Vidot returns in place of Drury Low on the wing who moves back to the Toyota Cup, while Joe Picker returns from an eye socket injury to replace Toyota Cup back rower Sam Mataora.
Mataora has been named 18th man for the clash, but is expected to return with Low to the Toyota Cup team. Raiders Captain Alan Tongue and lock Josh Miller are still not 100 per cent fit and will not return for the match, while Shaun Fensom and Adam Mogg are still unavailable due to injury.
Raiders Coach David Furner said he didn’t want to make too many changes from the side that defeated the Warriors two weeks ago, but has opted for more experience to take on the well drilled Storm outfit.
“I thought Sam and Drury did a great job for us against the Warriors and they’ll get their chance again sooner rather than later,” Furner said. “For us it’s about getting our experienced guys back on deck and I think Joey Picker and Daniel Vidot deserve to be in the team.”
Josh McCrone is another Raider who makes his return after signing a new two year deal last week and Furner said he will go straight back into the team for the injured Marc Herbert.
“Josh is fit again after overcoming a groin injury and he comes back into the team at halfback to help guide us around the park,” he said.

Hmmm when did Fensom become more than a 2 week injury. Picker ain't the best of the bench.

How Joe Picker walks straight back into the team is beyond me. He has been poor for a year and a half now, Mataora showed a lot more than he has.

As for Kelly being in the team, I still don't rate him. Between him and James Stuart we have a wing that hasn't scored a try and it's Round 10 on the weekend. Get someone a bit more dynamic like Low in there, who was also pretty solid in defence in his FG debut.

Agree Mataora offers much more from the bench. And like you said Low knows his way to a try line.

Not sure on Kelly's stats, but I do know that before he was injured James Stuart was actually leading the NRL in try saves. There's more to wing play than just finishing.

I'd have gone with Low and Vidot on the flanks.

This hard-on he has for McCrone is mind-boggling.

And Picker has been average for quite some time.

Just shows how we lack depth of real NRL players - we keep throwing these players in who are, at best, Canberra Cup players.

Time to loosen the purse strings, shed ourselves of the dead wood and buy ourselves a coach and three solid players whom we can develop our talent around.

Who do you want to shed? and who would you buy and fit them in a backline of

Dugan
Monas
Carney
Vidot
J.Thompson
Milne

because our 1st string backline is of 1st grade quality with future rep players.

This is true. I'd be fine if it was Stuart there ahead of Low, but I just have no confidence in Kelly. That try he let in against Souths :x

FYI there is a Canberra game up for Chooseday Night Football, get voting guys!

There's no argument there.

But.

He keeps picking Kelly. We don't have a halfback and our best hooker is a relatively untested rookie.

Drurie deserved to keep his spot. What else did he need to do on debut?
Terrible coaching by the Furnace

WTF @ Brett Kelly.

don't forget Croker, Low and Stuart

We have some pretty handy outside backs at the club at the moment, however kelly isnt one of them.

I was looking at the list when I wrote it and I knew I was missing someone. Croker.

Agree Kelly isnt FG material but Id imagine he is on minimum wage and therefore he is a back up. I would have Low and Stuart before him.
