Jarryd Hayne cleared by NRL judiciary of headbutt; free to play in Origin II

By staff writers
June 08, 2010 Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne has been cleared by the NRL judiciary for a headbutt on Melbourne Storm's Billy Slater, freeing him to play in State of Origin II.
Hayne was cleared after the three man panel deemed his contact to the head of Slater - who was on Tuesday chosen at fullback for Queensland - not significant enough to cause injury.

It is not yet known where Hayne will line up for the Blues, with NSW selectors to convene at the conclusion of Luke Lewis' hearing into a dangerous throw charge before naming the final 17 to take on Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday week.

"I'm just very, very, very happy - it pretty much just rattled me and I'm just so excited to be part of the squad now,'' Hayne said.

"It happened so fast ... I just can't wait to see the boys.''

Asked how worried he'd been in the lead-up to the hearing, Hayne said: "Obviously very - State of Origin's such a massive thing. I'm just glad I can be a part of it."

Was to be expected really, Jarryd Hype was never gonna miss Origin. Does set a precedent though.

Headbutting is now legal.

That's a bit rich when Slater got off with a forearm to the back of the head Dessert boy!

Cue Gaba to come out and announce that they shouldn't pick Hayne in the NSW side, and that Boyd would make a much better selection for the boys in blue.

Not surprising. Knees to the head = ok to play in Grand Final. Clear headbutt = ok to play in SOO.

Won't make any difference to the end result though, as QLD won't be complacent now. I thought that Hayne not playing may have been the Blues best chance as the Maroons slackened off a bit..

I'm obviously happy that Hayne will play, but I'm worried that he's just not going to learn from his mistakes. There's an ugly element to some of his actions. If there were some consequences for these little brain farts, he might correct his behaviour.

Luke Lewis is suspended for what was an accident, while Thurston, Slater and Hayne get off for actions that were all intentional. Sounds fair to me.

Luke Lewis has one of the best tackling techniques in the game. I hope he doesn't go changing that cause of this dumb decision.
