Cronulla chairman's future in the balance

So you shouldn't mind if I ask again. Why does the chairman even give them the time of day? Why is he basically feeding them bullets to spit back out at him?

You have to wonder huh?

Exactly I agree, his comments recently about the captaincy issue with the board, his Beekershark admission etc. Just f**king plain stupid.

But why is he? He cant be that stupid. The campaign by the SMH was talked about last year at a forum night. Its nothing new. The club is well aware. At the end of the day, after the dramas we've the club just needs to be out of the media.

Frenzy.

Well, he can't talk to News Ltd can he?

He's forgotten the agenda against the club so he's talking to The Herald to try and mitigate himself. Trouble is he is falling for every sucker punch they throw at him, like Daniel Lane (a sharks fan) putting it to him about being a certain internet forum identity.

Why would he even answer that? "The Coward's Castle" is bad and evil so he admits to using the very same medium to "pen attacks on the club's previous administration". Makes him part of the problem I would think and also makes him a hypocrite.

I know your question "he couldn't be that stupid" was rhetorical but from where I sit he is only opening his mouth to change feet.

If he denies it, the story then becomes "sharks chairman denies being internet identity". When there is clear evidence to the contrary, denying it is the stupid option.

Irvine is on record as saying if someone better comes along, he will happily give up his seat on the board for them. Perhaps a sharks fan who does believe they can do a better job will take him up on that offer.

I genuinely think Irvine has the best interests of the Sharks at heart.
The guy bleeds black, white & blue, sure he may make a few fugg ups, but I reckon his passion for the club is a big positive.

Maybe so, but his inexperience as a chairman is a huge negative. If not for his inexperience and obvious lack of people skills this thread and the bad press that is circulating would not be in existence.

EVIDENCE has surfaced of Cronulla chairman Damian Irvine's attempts to unseat captain Trent Barrett and replace him with Paul Gallen as he continues to cling to power in the Sutherland Shire by his own vote.
Irvine on Tuesday night survived a six-and-a-half hour meeting of the club's football and leagues club boards that ended at 12.30am but there is speculation a vote of no-confidence will be called in coming days. He retains the support of four directors - his appointees Denise Aldous, Jenny Reynolds and club accountant Craig Douglas, as well as Sharks sponsor and B2B Commercial owner Ricky Surace but the four others board members - Keith Ward, Jim Barnett, Greg Holland and Paul Walker - are understood to want him removed.

Their demand for change stems from several issues including Irvine's failure to consult the board before accepting Ricky Stuart's resignation last week, his approach to Nathan Brown to replace Stuart earlier this year and his move to sack Barrett as captain.
The chairman last week denied reports of a fractured relationship with Barrett, who last Friday confirmed he would retire at the end of the season. However, an email sent by Irvine to then coach Stuart and Sharks chief executive Richard Fisk on April 23 shows he was behind a move to install Gallen as captain.
Labelled in the subject line as ''An idea going forward'' the email, which was provided to the Herald by a club source and has been viewed widely at the Sharks, is directed chiefly towards Stuart and asks him to consider replacing Barrett with Gallen.
''The captaincy of the first-grade side is a football decision and is obviously yours to make, Ricky. So please don't think I'm trying to interfere, just help,'' Irvine wrote, before adding: ''I think Trent is fantastic and doing a great job so don't take this the wrong way. I'm just saying that if you want it, the players want it, Paul wants it and Trent is happy, there is no reason why he [Gallen] shouldn't be captain in my opinion and I would support and explain that to the full board.''
The email continues: ''We've committed to Paul for four years and we've told him we're starting a clean slate so nothing in the past should be taken into account. All I care about is the now and the future.'' In the email, Irvine also wrote that he was not entirely aware of the circumstances - an alleged racist slur against then St George Illawarra forward Mickey Paea - which led to Gallen stepping down from the captaincy in May last year. The chairman did not return calls yesterday but last week played down suggestions of a rift with Barrett.
At the time the email was sent Barrett was still weighing up whether to continue his career into next year or retire. His relationship with Irvine is understood to have begun to unravel in March when the chairman turned his back on Barrett in the dressing room in Auckland following a disappointing individual performance in a 30-16 defeat to the Warriors.
According to sources, Barrett told Irvine to ''f--- off'' because of his presence in the dressing room after another game this season.
Stuart, who in May announced he would leave the Sharks at the end of the season and a fortnight ago decided to depart immediately following a heavy loss to Manly, had barely been on speaking terms with Irvine since Christmas when he first became aware of an approach to Brown, the coach of English Super League side Huddersfield, to replace him in the top job at Cronulla.
Fisk left the club in June and admitted he did not see eye to eye with Irvine on some issues during his time running the football department at Cronulla.
As reported by the Herald, Irvine has since been under scrutiny for attacking the Sharks' previous administration in online forums under the pseudonym ''Beeker Shark'' and for his support of the new Cronulla Leagues Club general manager Deborah Feening, who is under investigation for alleged fraud at the Marconi Club.

So Irvine wanted the most passionate player in the team to be captain over a bloke who wanted to quit the game.

what an idiot.

Spot on Carch.

The only idiots are the ones buying in to the crap being dished out by the media who clearly love watching us suffer or worse, want us out of the game.

With Irvine as chairman we have somene who is passionate about the club and would give everything for Cronulla. I would be seriously worried about our clubs future if he were to be forced out.

The disturbing thing here is the leaks coming out of the board from the rats who survived the cleanout...

Oh and read the email again, he is simply stating that he would support a move to reinstate Gallen as captain and would explain this support to the board.

99% of Sharks fans would want Gallen as captain anyway.

We need to support Irvine. He isn't in this for himself...

which one of you keyboard heros want to take on the job, WITHOUT PAY.
If it meant I would be free from any form of criticism then sure why not? What are the negatives if you can't be held accountable for your stuff ups? People seem to give him a pass because he is "trying hard".

I am not the biggest beeker fan by any means but I think whoever is leaking that type of stuff to the media should stfu

Who cares if he isn't paid? It doesn't give you the right to alienate whoever you please. This club has had the humiliation of having the ex CEO, ex Coach and club captain all having negative words to say about Irvine.

wozza ...I think you missed the point then.

It is one thing to bag out the club in here under an alias..but to leak personal info to the media about board member is a different game .

I see absolutely nothing wrong with conveying to the coach that the chairman would have no problem with Gallen as captain. The decision to remove Gal was a political one / not a football one and as such it's entirely appropriate to indicate that those political reasons no longer exist. My only issue is doing this by email. Why the fugg wouldn't you pick up the phone, or do it face to face? You can then explain yourself better on what could be a delicate topic.

Carch, How do you know that the leaks about this persons alleged indiscretions didn't come from her former employer?
And if you are referring to Irvine's anonymity, get real. No one forced him to put his hand up. If he didn't expect to get found out sooner or later he was pretty naive to say the least
