brett white has been signed. while one of canberras much beloved sons and loyal clubman, Troy thompson has been the door!

thommo, who was desperate to stay at the raiders, is devsastated about being axed. why are we buying white anyway! our problems havent been with our forwards (of which thommo is one our best!) so why fix what aint broke, especially at the expense of one of the towns favourite players! i have heard from my source that the club culture is in disarray, with many currently contracted players unhappy with managemnt and coach! which could be part of the reason for a lucklustre season. raiders management talk in the media about how they receive little player loyalty, but have failed to show thommo any loyalty.. is it any wonder duges was so hesitant to resign here. if this is the way the club is run im not surprised the team is going so poorly on the field.. they expect player loyalty while showing none themselves!! poor show raiders management, very poor show! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!

Extract from article: Storm warning: Melbourne tell rivals to keep their hands off Cronk

NSW State of Origin prop Brett White's proposed move to Canberra on a three-year contract is also now believed to be a virtual done deal, with the deal only awaiting approval from the NRL's salary cap audit team.

The recruitment of White will bolster an imposing Raiders forward pack that already features Origin props David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.

White is still contracted to the Storm for two seasons. To be released from the remainder of that contract, the NRL would need to allow any shortfall between what the Storm had planned to pay him and what the Raiders will pay to be counted in this year's blown cap.

The recruitment of White will signal the end of the career of Canberra stalwart Troy Thompson, who will pursue a career at another club or retire.

News of White's signing comes three days before the Raiders are due to meet the Storm in Melbourne.

OK, everyone just stop.

I can't believe how much whinging is going on. We've signed an Origin prop - who come to think of it is the first current rep player we've signed in living memory - and we're cutting loose one of the more mediocre props in the competition to accomodate him.

All this boo-hooing for poor Troy Thompson. He's not getting a new deal for one simple reason - he's on an obscene amount of money (this is common knowledge) for a player his talent and he didn't want to take a pay cut.

This is a guy who as recently as early this season was getting dropped because he could not catch the football!!!! Seriously!

He has never been in the top 3 props at the club - this goes back to when the top 3 were Davico, O'Hara and Payten and even then Rutgeson would have been fourth - but somehow his 'loyalty' and 'good bloke' qualities have been enough to see him get a massively inflated contract far and above what he's worth.

As for his 'loyalty'. Really. You're joking, right? Clubs were not breaking down the door to get Troy Thompson's signature. He was never going to walk out on the club for more money because no club in their right mind would offer him more money than what we were. He was the Craig Frawley of props - thoroughly average and on a ridiculous amount of money for it. The difference was people saw through it with Frawley.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - this is not football camp. It's not important how hard you try or how good a bloke you are. Not everybody should get a turn because they're nice and they try hard.

I hope he gets an ESL retirement contract. But I'm not sad he's going.

I'm not. I choose to embrace strange concepts. Like logic.

And pyromania.

On topic, why are people assuming we've just shoved Thompson out the door? From what I've heard, he was not prepared to take a deal which befits his status as a backup player.

Let's be honest, as good a bloke as Thommo is, he's not in our top 17 when all players are fit. I don't like Brett White as a player, I think he's far too dirty, but as far as I'm concerned he starts with a clean slate when he pulls on the lime green jersey.

Rightly or wrongly, White has played for Australia. White has played for NSW. Rightly or wrongly, White has played in 4 grand finals, winning 2. That sort of experience alone will be invaluable for a team as young as ours.

Think about it: we've now got a prop rotation better than any team in the NRL. We've got 2 Australian props, and another Origin prop who is a very strong chance of joining Shillo and White as an Australian representative at the end of the year.

And people are complaining? People would rather keep a severely declining Thompson over White?

Am I the only one who thinks that that is absolutely crazy?

Raidersrawesome, there's a strong rumour now that Cooper Cronk wants to follow his good friend Brett to Canberra to play behind the NRL's most imposing forward pack in 2011. Now it's probably a long shot, and we all know how often rumours turn out to be true, but if it was, would you support the signing of White if it landed us Cronk as well? Or would you rather Cronk and White stay in Melbourne so we can keep Troy Thompson?

Yeah, lets keep doing what we've done for years, have a roster full of ok players like TT, and enjoy the continuation of the mountain of success we've enjoyed this century.

Without knowing what money White is being paid its hard to judge. But as a player, white averages 85 metres a match and makes 20 tackles. Pretty similar numbers to Thompson, who regularly plays off the bench, and not stats of a top line prop. I just hope the money isnt huge, and that it doesnt prevent us from signing someone decent in a position where we really struggle, rather than prop.

All well and good having the forward pack, but if your backs aren't doing the business then you won't get far. The Sharks are the prime example of this.
