Thriller of a finish masks worrying lack of professionalism

ok, so can we expect gould to criticise todays game also in his next column? I dont think so.......that is my point -consistency, sometimes gould lacks - neither of these teams would win a GF with those error rates
Lets be frank, the Dragons game at least had some solid defense where the attack had to work for the ball. Look at the game Gus is critical of...

Robbie Farah try as soft as they come, embarrassingly easy try
The Tuqiri try was also soft.
Beau Ryan makes an appalling play leading directly to a Souths try and off the kick off the Rabbitohs lose the ball.

Then the Tigers bomb try after try after try. Tigers should have been ahead at least 40-12 at one stage, not through great Souths defense but through ill discipline and rubbish.

This is where I thought that Gus lacked in his criticism of the match. Souths weren't expected to come close to the Tigers when Lowe, Best and Champion pulled out. To me this was one of the most courageous victories I have seen from a South Sydney side. To come from 16 points down with the amount of injuries we had shows plenty of spirit from the guys out there last night.

As for the Tigers they can go and blame the refs and say that they were hard done by but at the end of the day they had that game won at 28-12 but played some stupid footy to get Souths back in the game.
Souths were gifted the match by the Tigers. That is the bottom line.

Ben Creagh try - soft as - soft attempted tackle and off he goes
Todd Carney try - soft as - 3 defenders and couldnt stop the try
Dean Young try - soft goal line try - again, even softer than Robbie Farrar try

is Goold gonna be critical of those tries today?

Ok. continue playing the man and not the ball. The Souths v Tigers game was an excellent example of what to expect in the semis, I expect both to be there come October.

We've got j-Lowe and the stapler, both of whom we pull out of park footy. Then Clarke, farrel and tyrell, who are only young, and don't have those proffessional qualities yet. Corrigan who gas spent All year in the bears team. Then you have crossman who belongs in park football. What's the tigers excuse?

The Tigers played terrible but it was still exciting. However for Souths, I can't say they played badly given they were a half-reserve grade side playing against what is supposed to be the fourth best in the competition.

final line in the article

Gus said:
The Tigers entertained the kids; but they played so dumb. They also got what they deserved.

No excuse. Marshall failed at being a competent organising half again.

If Robbie Farah hadn't have been there on Saturday night, I reckon Souths would have flogged the Tigers. He almost single handedly won the game for the Tigers.

Marshall, as per usual, overplayed his hand everytime he saw a tiny bit of space.

With the number of players Souths had out, we needed to turn up and convince the Tigers to play a game of touch and we did that perfectly. If they'd have played a grinding error free game, they'd have beat us by 20. Instead, they were drawn into playing from one sideline to the other and thinking they had to play with flair to beat us.

A couple of times there, Benji made clean breaks and tried to pull off the impossible play, where all he really needed to do was hold the ball and take the tackle. Chances are Farah would have dived over from the play the ball.

Gus seemsto bag South Sydney more than any other team though. A few weeks ago on the Sunday Roast he said that there are two underachieving teams in the comp, Cowboys and South Sydney. I don't know how he thought Souths were underachieving more than Parramatta or Canterbury. In the past few weeks Souths had been beaten by Manly, Roosters and Dragons in the last five minutes. With probably the worst injury toll in the NRL, it seems that he thinks that Souths have to beat the top sides with a reserve grade team to not be disappointments. But yet, after they do that, he still bags them.

Those tight losses were incredibly disappointing. We wouldn't be where we are if we had gone the extra bit in those games

Yeah but they have to play really badly. Otherwise he slurps'em hard.

Gould really pisses me off with his gripe with South Sydney. It's blatant, unbalanced and insulting. Everytime we're on 9 and he's commentating he's so quick to jump on our back and give us sh*t.

Agreed it wasn't the highest standard of game though.

I don't know what he was trying to get at with this story. Had we have fielded a full strength team and played with similar error rates, I could understand. Fact is, we had a virtual Full strength pack on the sidelines, a number of NSW cup strength players in the side and a bloke out in the centre's making his debut. If we'd have turned out a game with few errors and looked professional, I'd have been amazed.

The two teams Gus has had it in for this year are Penrith and Souths

When Penrith flogged the Roosters earlier in the year it was a game where Penrith did not play super and the Roosters were disgraceful. Obviously the Roosters deserved more of a bagging than Penrith. But Gus spent almost his entire column giving it to Penrith saying they should have won by 50 or so. While there was some truth in this he hardly mentioned the effort of the Roosters in his column

Yes and when the Roosters beat the Broncos earlier in the year he went on about how poor we were and gibbered over and over again the Broncos being the better team.

It's not exclusive to one club, the man gives criticism wherever he sees fit, which sees him take a shot at everyone at one time or another. He's annoying as hell, but he knows Rugby.

R.e the Souths/Tigers game- yeah it was really poor quality. But It was a reserve grade souths and for that effort you can't fault them.

Big deal, you have every other journo in NSW trotting out the "Pride of the League" garbage every time you lot somehow manage to string 2 wins together.
