Who Should Captain Souths NRL In 2011 ?

I want to put it out there about the captaincy I am not happy with Roy he has not got enough passion for me and never revs up the troops when we have points scored against us and does not run hard anymore and does not lead by example. My option and potentially going to be a great captain with passion and leads by example would be BIG SAM ? What do you Rabbitohs Supporters Think ?

Personally I was hoping to give Sam another before taking over reins over, but the Sam has the the killer instinct and will to win,I think sooner the better.

Roy will captain Souths in 2011, which is the last year of contract (I think).

For me, Sam Burgess is the obvious chocie to follow Asotasi as Souths captain.

Roy is with us until 2013,he signed a 2year extension earlier in the season.

Roy lost me when he stated that Souths should win it for Rusty.
I think a real "bolter" to captain us would be Beau Champion.
But i would love to see Luke Stuart get the captaincy on his own.
It would be fitting for Luke to have that honour especially if 2011 is his last as a player.

It's got to be Mick Crocker for me. He is by far the most experienced player in the squad in terms of the rep teams he's played for plus he challenges the refs on any dubious decisions which Roy fails to do. Sam and Beau are too young at the moment but in a couple of years either would be ideal.

Crocker is injured too much to be captain.

Leave it with Asotasi, there's enough leaders at the club that have their say during a game. Changing the captaincy won't achieve anything

I agree, Sam plays with serious passion. But it might be too much passion, he seems to be on the bad side of the refs

The key element missing from Sam's game at the moment is patience, both in choosing the right time for the big play and the right time to address the ref. Give him another year to sort that put and he'll be a great skipper.

Agree that Roy doesn't work the (C) the way you would hope and never looks comfortable in his duties. I'd be happy with any of those suggested and would also suggest that the way B.Lowe and Merritt play the game wouldnt be inconsistent with captaincy

I think leave Sam alone to do what he does. He doesn't need the 'c' next to his name to be inspirational. Roy almost looked like he was starting to get back to something good in the last month or so.

I do recall noticing Max doing a lot of talking in one particular game. Don't think he'd be too bad (especially from the back).

It wont matter who has the (c) next to their name if we cant learn how to tackle in the off-season. 4th worst defensive record in the league. I hope someone is pouring over video footage of the season and finding out who the weak links are in defence and finding a way to rectify this for next season. Forget the narrow losses and the dud refs calls....4th worst defence suggests we didnt deserve to be there and we havent improved as a team on last year despite adding Burgess and Taylor.

Roy hasnt walked the walk for a while now. I think hes harbouring a profound injury.

I would hope that we had a few more candidates but Id say Sutto is the most deserved.

The other thing is that the honour would give him good reason to perform at his wonderful higher level on a more consistent basis.

Max and Champs might be OK.

Sam is way too new and is still a little over-excited.

After his astonishing rookie season, I predict that Sam will just about win us a premiership. He's Morley plus.

At his peak, Moz was the best player in the NRL, say only by about 100 miles.

I got a cold shiver thinking about Sam at his peak in 2013-2017. He will re-write record books.

For the moment, he is still in his formative baby steps NRL stage. It takes at least 2 seasons for these special guys to dominate and Sam is still quite young.

This is a very difficult question. I agree with Dave that Sutto is a strong candidate but I am unsure about his communication skills. I look at other leading captains such as benji marshall and scott prince and I see them directing play and talking to all their players to ensure they are all focused. I'm not sure if Sutto can do that!
I think that Sam is fantastic and is our best buy for many years. He will develop into the best backrower in the game over the next year or two but I would not load the captians responsibility on him just yet.
Having stated my thinking on communication I still think that Roy is our best bet for next year. He lacks some of the skills of the better captians but he is passionate and is committed to the club. If he is carrying a long term injury then hopefully he can get it right in the off season and come back as a stronger leader next year.

In the Panthers and Dragons games Souths competed for 0 minutes in both matches. From the opening whistle the opposition made very easy metres right through the middle of the park with no risk. They were going the length of the field in almost every set from the kickoff after scoring a try. If the forwards are going to defend so poorly in key games then no need to worry about captaincy

Burgess was the only one to respond to the challenge in the Dragons game and play well. Crocker and McPherson had OK defensive stats. But people like Pettybourne and Taylor who are normally first grade standard players had shocking stats in the Dragons game. Tyrell went shocking but he always does. Asotasi's stats were pretty poor too

Luke Stuart has been badly missed in the last few weeks. Souths had better find a replacement for him when he retires otherwise it is back to the wooden spoon

I wonder how Taylor would go? He certainly can put on a play that will inspire! I think the issue will be that we need a captain who is on the field all of the time, or at least 70 minutes of a game.

Pettybourne had such an irrelevant year. I never noticed when he was on. I know he was injured for awhile but still, he looked like a shadow of his former-self
