NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, today presented a 2010 State of the Game report showcasing how Rugby League has connected with more members and fans than ever before in a record-breaking Telstra Premiership that achieved the highest ever regular season attendance in history.

A Telstra Premiership season that began with the ground-breaking All Stars match and finished with an enthralling Finals race that went down to the last game has broken new ground in 2010, recording growth in crowds, ratings, membership, sponsorship, participation, online engagement and licensing.

The courage, skill and power of players that captivated fans each week also provided hope and inspiration to those in need through One Community and club charity programs that are the most comprehensive in Australian sport and which make a positive difference to people’s lives.

In presenting the 2010 State of the Game report at the NRL today, Mr Gallop paid tribute to the players, clubs, officials, volunteers, members, fans, and broadcasters for the part they have played in another exciting season.

“Often it’s only when you take the time to look at the season as a whole do you appreciate just how many positive things are happening and what this report shows is that the game is in tremendous shape across the board,” Mr Gallop said.

“The NRL continues to record significant growth in key areas game-wide and we are connecting with more members and fans than ever before.

“This growth has created some important opportunities for the game and the ongoing success of a Telstra Premiership that captivates supporters week in, week out, has ensured we are in a strong position to capitalise on them.”

Highlights of the 2010 Telstra Premiership season include:

- The total regular season attendance for the 2010 Telstra Premiership of 3,151,039 was the highest in history, smashing the previous record of 3,081,874 set in 2009.

- Rugby League was the top performing sport year-on-year on FTA television in 2010 with ratings in Sydney increasing by 5.2% for live Friday night matches and 3% for delayed Friday night matches.

- Rugby League became the first sport in the world to showcase 3D television on FTA television with the 2010 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series.

- Rugby League was the number one program on subscription television, claiming 39 of the top 50 programs on Fox Sports, including four of the top five.

- The historic All Stars match that attracted a sell-out crowd of 26,687 and a live TV audience of 1.292 million viewers provided an inspiring form of practical reconciliation for all Australians and paved the way for the game’s second Reconciliation Action Plan.

- NRL players and ambassadors have already this year spent more than 22,000 hours involved in One Community and club community and charity programs, including ground-breaking programs such as Rugby League Reads and Learn. Earn. Legend!

- NRL.com recorded a 45% increase in unique browsers in 2010 while the number of fans connecting with the game online each month broke through the two million mark for the first time.

Record numbers of fans visited their club sites as part of the game’s Club Website Network, with a monthly average of 690,000 unique browsers to the network in 2010, a 70% increase on 2009.

- The weekly excitement of the 2010 Telstra Premiership generated a record number of 144,190 NRL Club Members, up 28% from 2009.

- The NRL’s commitment to assisting players to access education and workplace training has helped 88% of NRL players achieve post-secondary school qualifications – more than double the number since the introduction of education grants in 2004 – while 98% of Toyota Cup players are taking part in further education or employment.

- The NRL generated an extra $3 million in sponsorship through new and extended commercial partnerships.

- The NRL and NSW Government formed a 10-year, $45 million partnership to play the Telstra Premiership Grand Final at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

- As part of the historic agreement, Rugby League fans will this year, for the first time, enjoy a week-long Telstra Premiership Grand Final Festival in Sydney.

Funny how they try to put the most positive spin on how they present things.

eg, if a graph shows an increase (eg membership), they crop the bottom of the graph to make the increase look more significant. If the graph shows a decrease (eg Sunday TV ratings) they show the whole graph, making the decrease look immaterial.

And you look at the highest ratings for shows. The pregame for the SOO counts as a separate show? Good way to boost the count...

Yes, there are some good results in there, and some not so good results too. Do we need the spin?

So 39 of the top 50 shows on subscription TV.

Yet the AFL still get more pay TV money than us.

Disgraceful.

Someone needs to beat these drums louder!
Just on those two stats right there we should be worth sooooooo much more than the AFL (mainly the FoxSports stat where they have the money due to subscriptions that drive the business). On top of this is the Toyota Cup that adds even more money to the coffers....

Add to the TV worth plus the worth of the internet rights (currently $0 paid) there would be no money problems in the NRL.

Clubs are cheaper to run than the AFL, players get a bigger percentage of the revenue than the AFL and there are 15 less players in a RL team compared to AFL.

NRL players if on par with the AFL in the TV deal should be getting paid 10-20% more!

Good stuff and a good year all round, if we can get close to this seasons percentage increases in members and attendances, next season will be a boom year and we should crack 17K for the average.

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't call a 2% increase "smashing". It's more relevant to see an ongoing trend.

Its incredible. I'd just love for once to hear from an exec on why that is. I keep coming back to reason that its down to horrible negotiators on the side of the NRL.

it's because they take NRL subscribers for granted and feel they shouldn't be paying much

Foxtel hits back at critics of deal

By Brent Read
July 19, 2008

ONE of the NRL's key broadcasters has grown tired of constant sniping over the game's multi-million dollar television deal, writing a letter in which it claims critics have missed the point by arguing rugby league has undersold itself in comparison to the AFL.

Critics of the NRL administration have used the record television deal - struck in 2006 and worth around $500million over six years - to attack the power base of chief executive David Gallop and part owner, News Limited.

In particular, they have suggested the amount the NRL received for its pay-TV rights was less than the AFL, and far less than the game deserved given the code's ratings dominance.

Clearly frustrated with ongoing criticism, Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams outlined the argument behind the AFL's bigger slice of the pay-TV pie.

Williams said the pay-TV broadcaster paid more for AFL rights because it wanted to make headway in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, where the AFL is a powerhouse.

"The value of television rights is determined by the return you think you can achieve on that investment," Williams wrote.

"In this case the number of subscribers you think you can win by offering them something they want. When rugby league first appeared on pay-TV, a huge sum was paid for the rights, but there were no subscribers.

"The value of the rights reflected the belief that subscribers would materialise. They did.

"Today, the market penetration of pay-TV in NSW and Queensland is much higher than it is in Victoria, South Australian and Western Australia for two reasons.

"One, because pay-TV had more games of NRL than AFL and better quality games of league than (Australian) rules, and two, because coverage of NRL on pay-TV began years before coverage of AFL.

"So when the AFL rights came up two years ago, their value was determined based on an estimate of how many new subscribers could be won in the southern states where market penetration was much lower, as well as in NSW and Queensland where the success of the Swans and the Lions had helped build stronger public interest in the northern states."

South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe raised the ire of the NRL last week by claiming the game was the poor cousin to the AFL.

Gallop responded by telling Crowe to stick to acting.

well Mr Williams League STILL dominates despite your f**king bullsh*t

these merkins must bemade to pay top dollar next time. see how many subscribers leave if there's no NRL you f**kwit

AFL has now had 5 years to prove that it can create more subscriptions. If Fox fail to put in a competitive increased offer for NRL, then the NRL should sell their allocation to the FTA networks to onsell or a satellite network or internet download provider.

Next year when the rights are be negotiated, it would be wise of rugby league fans with foxtel subscription to write the company an email stating you will cancel it if there's no NRL. I've already done this but if 100 to 1000 others did it next year during the negotiations, it would give them something to think about.

5 years?

would have been longer than that. AFL has been on Pay since the C7 days.

Kim Williams is just full of sh*t.

Sorry I meant 8 years on Foxtel but 5 for the last deal. Subscriptions were flat last year.

The talk is that the 9th AFL game will be Saturday 5:00pm - overlapping with 2 other games. No Free to Air Network will buy it and it'll go head to head with NRL on FOX.

The NRL can add another game to FTA -
* Friday 7:30pm's - live and flipped on digital and followed on at 9:30pm
* Sunday 2pm & 4pm live or slight delay

and float the 9th game between these non-clashing timeslots:
* Friday 7:45pm NZ (5:45pm EST) on Fox
* Saturday 5:00pm NZ (3:00pm EST) on Fox
* Sunday 12:00pm EST or 2:00pm NZ (12:00pm EST) on Fox
* Sunday 4:00pm WA (6:00pm EST) on Fox
* Sunday 7:00pm EST where Monday's a public holiday

If Fox don't want to pay the game its increased value, the NRL can onsell an 8:30pm Saturday slot to FTA.

As for poorer subscription level of FOX in Vic, WA and SA. It is true that there is more quailty games of League on Fox than what FOX is left with by the AFL. In the AFL's broadcasting deal, the Free to Air networks get first dibs and FOX gets the scraps. On top of that the WA and SA clubs are guaranteed Free to Air telecasts of All there games so the incentive to get FOX is far weaker. FOX is desperate to get access to more quality AFL and look forward to the review of anti-syphoning laws. Many are quite fanatical in keeping sport on free to air in WA and SA. Besides the obvious convenience, it can be easily reasoned that it should stay on FTA as not everyone can afford or get access to a ticket for the AFL or NRL but it is mostly public money which payed for the building and maintainance of the Stadiums.
