Greg Inglis will consider legal action against the Melbourne Storm if he's not released from his contract for next season.
And the contract saga could take a further twist with rival NRL clubs - including South Sydney, and French rugby union - set to pounce on the Test star if he becomes a free agent.
Inglis is due to join the Brisbane Broncos' opening pre-season training day on Monday at St Lucia's University of Queensland, despite not yet being officially released by the Storm.
But the stand-off is far from settled with the Storm sticking to their guns. Melbourne will only release Inglis from his current two-year deal if he pays a portion of the legal bill related to assault charges from last year.
While the total figure stands at $113,000, it's understood the Storm have agreed to release Inglis on the grounds that he pays $30,000 of the total sum.
The Storm are covering the difference because it would attract a fringe benefits tax, meaning the actual amount would almost double to $58,000.
It would also appear on the club's salary cap for next year, forcing them to operate with 24 players in 2011.
But Inglis believes he shouldn't have to pay the fee because of a cost agreement signed by a former Melbourne Storm official in the lead-up to the hearing.
He also claims he had no say in his representation of the hearing.
A source close to Inglis said that the dispute could lead to him seeking an injunction for a release through the Federal Court. "He might have to go to court to settle it all out," The Sunday Mail was told.
"It's not what anyone would want, but it's definitely an option."
But a Melbourne Storm official who was unwilling to be named refuted the claims, saying: "On what grounds"?
"Greg at all stages had the right to choose his own representation.
"He sat in on all the meetings."
Watching the ugly and bitter fallout unfold from the sidelines have been rival NRL clubs, including the Rabbitohs.
Souths were eager to secure the Test centre's signature before he agreed to join the Broncos and the club is waiting anxiously to see how the saga progresses.
