South Sydney and French Rugby Union Set to Pounce on Greg Inglis

Greg Inglis will consider legal action against the Melbourne Storm if he's not released from his contract for next season.

And the contract saga could take a further twist with rival NRL clubs - including South Sydney, and French rugby union - set to pounce on the Test star if he becomes a free agent.

Inglis is due to join the Brisbane Broncos' opening pre-season training day on Monday at St Lucia's University of Queensland, despite not yet being officially released by the Storm.

But the stand-off is far from settled with the Storm sticking to their guns. Melbourne will only release Inglis from his current two-year deal if he pays a portion of the legal bill related to assault charges from last year.

While the total figure stands at $113,000, it's understood the Storm have agreed to release Inglis on the grounds that he pays $30,000 of the total sum.

The Storm are covering the difference because it would attract a fringe benefits tax, meaning the actual amount would almost double to $58,000.

It would also appear on the club's salary cap for next year, forcing them to operate with 24 players in 2011.

But Inglis believes he shouldn't have to pay the fee because of a cost agreement signed by a former Melbourne Storm official in the lead-up to the hearing.

He also claims he had no say in his representation of the hearing.

A source close to Inglis said that the dispute could lead to him seeking an injunction for a release through the Federal Court. "He might have to go to court to settle it all out," The Sunday Mail was told.

"It's not what anyone would want, but it's definitely an option."

But a Melbourne Storm official who was unwilling to be named refuted the claims, saying: "On what grounds"?

"Greg at all stages had the right to choose his own representation.

"He sat in on all the meetings."

Watching the ugly and bitter fallout unfold from the sidelines have been rival NRL clubs, including the Rabbitohs.

Souths were eager to secure the Test centre's signature before he agreed to join the Broncos and the club is waiting anxiously to see how the saga progresses.

Can someone tell me how we could afford him under the salary cap?

Because we haven't made a significant signing in ages. As the salary cap increases, if you don't make buys (and if you don't have backended contracts) room opens up naturally.

At this stage it seems like a longshot but if we can get Inglis, it would be huge. Just what we need. Some firepower in the backs to capitalise on what our forward pack does.

I said it before that we have enough room under the cap for one more major signing. We also have tremendous opportunity to backend any contracts with Crocker, Luke Stuart and Wesser all set to retire end 2011. There will also be an increase to the cap with the upcoming TV rights increase and the 350K marquee allowance also helps out.

The difficult thing in all this is trying to pick the right palyer/s. GI is an obvious one but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for his signature. Nothing grabbed me in the 4 nations that looked like we should chase someone from overseas. Our club seems to be on the ball with many issues so I trust that they have scanned all players coming off contract end 2011 and move quickly to tie up the ones we want!

That would be right. Without stiring the pot, here are a few home truths:
Your club desperately needs depth in the backs so rather than buy 3 young & highly promising backs @ $200,000 a pop, you prefer to sign GI @ $600,000 a year (yes, that's what he commands). If he suffers injury you're stuffed.
The retension of Wesser had the league world in stitches. He plays 3-4 good games per year then goes off the boil or gets injured.
The same can be said of Talanoa. He is NSW State Cup standard.
The retension of Ben Ross is admirable BUT he's standing in the way of some other young bull raring to get an opportunity.
You are without suitable replacements if your half & 5/8 either get injured or get relegated due to poor form. Why let Capewell go??? Good back-up.

Time to debut Dylan Farrell, Vaivai, Haangana & Mansour in 2011. Inject some fresh blood. Jamie Simpson plays with more enthusiam than Richo does with his breakfast.
Just on Richo - THE FAT CONTROLLER must go in order for the Bunnies to move forward. AMEN.

Your thoughts.

If he suffers injury you're stuffed. - WE HAVE THREE PROMISING YOUNG BACKS ALREADY - WE NEED A TOP QUALITY BACK NOW
The retension of Wesser had the league world in stitches. He plays 3-4 good games per year then goes off the boil or gets injured. - TRUE HE SHOULD NOT BE HERE ANYMORE
The same can be said of Talanoa. He is NSW State Cup standard. - BETTER THAN NSW CUP
The retension of Ben Ross is admirable BUT he's standing in the way of some other young bull raring to get an opportunity. - DONT AGREE HE WILL HELP US NEXT SEASON AND IS NOT ON MASSIVE MONEY
You are without suitable replacements if your half & 5/8 either get injured or get relegated due to poor form. Why let Capewell go??? Good back-up. - CAPEWELL IS CR@P HE WAS ONE OF THE WORST/MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYERS I SAW IN NSW CUP LAST SEASON

Time to debut Dylan Farrell, Vaivai, Haangana & Mansour in 2011. - YES THEY ARE THE YOUNG PLAYERS THAT WOULD GAIN FROM GI BEING HERE (WHICH HE WONT BE ANYWAY!)

Wayne Bennett had an option on 2011 at the Steel Dragons are will take it up. Russell Croew will have to offer Bennett 1 mil to sign at Souths. He may not stay at the Dragons after 2011 but he really likes the St.G/Illa club and the anonimity of living in Wollongong. He likes his team to be out of the limelight and Wollongong offers that.

Well for a start i'd be happy to have Champion & Simpson as my centres with Farrell & Vai Vai there to keep them honest.
Regarding Wayne Bennett i doubt it very much if he would come to Souths just for the money & there would have to be a challenge there for him to remain hungry.
But this is getting out of hand.
How about we put the cheque book away & concentrate building Souths on our own terms rather than follow those other clubs who have bought premierships in the past.

Inglis is just using Souths to scare Brisbane and News Ltd into settling his dispute.

Lol @ souths.

Check the papers mate. In an hour it's gone from "50-50" to:

SOUTH Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe is on the verge of convincing Greg Inglis to turn his back on Brisbane and sign with the Rabbitohs.

Inglis has spent a couple of days in Sydney and he's had Crowe, Anthony Mundine and Gordon Tallis in his ear.

And the Broncos are taking it more seriously than you. Broncos chief exec:

"We are aware he's in Sydney and we believe through third parties that when he was in Sydney he was considering his future and considering his position with moving to the Rabbitohs. We're frustrated to the point where we're seriously considering our options and we will probably have to move on. We can't just keep telling our fans and our sponsors and our players that he might be playing with us if that's not his intention."

Was it not Mr Russell Crowe who famously stated soon after taking control of the Bunnies he would not engage in cheque book rugby league .

South Sydney launch plan to lure Greg Inglis to Rabbitohs

IT'S potentially one of the biggest signings in rugby league history - a Hollywood superstar and a boxing champion using all their persuasive power to lure Greg Inglis to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Just when it appeared certain that rugby league's best player would be going to the Broncos or French rugby union, Russell Crowe and Anthony Mundine step in with an audacious plan to deliver him to Redfern.
The Daily Telegraph understands part of the deal would involve Mundine paying up to $100,000 of Inglis' outstanding legal bills at Melbourne Storm, which have prevented him from getting a release to sign with the Broncos. The NRL insists it would still have to be included in Souths' cap.
It would be a similar gesture to when Mundine personally paid Sonny Bill Williams' release fee from the Bulldogs to play rugby union in France in return for him appearing in two fights on his boxing cards.
Crowe could not be contacted yesterday because he is overseas promoting his next movie but he has been hammering CEO Shane Richardson with daily emails, phone calls and text messages trying to get the deal over the line.
Richardson is normally happy to discuss anything about the Rabbitohs but not in this case. "I have no comment to make," he says to the first three questions before we challenge him about the difficulty of fitting the Maroons and Test centre under the salary cap.
"I always leave a bit of room to manoeuvre," he says, although not sounding overly convincing.
Surely the Rabbitohs could not possibly fit a $500,000-a-year player under the cap without having to shed one of their biggest names - possibly even skipper and prop Roy Asotasi, who has been rumoured to be on the outer.
Crowe has been trying to get Inglis to Souths for a while. They had spoken on several occasions long before the Storm salary cap crisis. Mundine is also regularly in contact with Inglis and was advising him when Andrew Johns referred to him as a "black c ... " in a Blues bonding session.
Inglis' manager Alan Gainey was also reluctant to comment when asked about the prospect of his blue-ribbon player wearing the red and green jersey.
"I suppose you could say it's 50-50 at the moment," Gainey said, "He admires Anthony Mundine, he's been speaking to him a lot, and Souths have seen a loophole because of the problems of getting a release from Storm."
The decision by Inglis to even consider playing for the Rabbitohs will stun rugby league followers who were of the understanding he had moved to the Broncos to be with his fiancee Sally Robinson, who was transferred from Melbourne to Brisbane by her employers mid-year.
In August, when he agreed to terms with the Broncos, Gainey told this newspaper: "He wants to buy a house in Brisbane with his girlfriend and settle down properly for the first time in his life.
"If his fiancee hadn't moved to Brisbane, he'd still be with her and playing for Melbourne next year."
Suddenly, the situation has changed since Crowe, Mundine and Mundine's own agent Khoder Nasser have become involved behind the scenes.
Nasser's involvement and his relationship with eccentric Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal has fuelled speculation that French rugby union is both a lucrative and realistic option should the Souths or Broncos deals fall over.

NRL boss David Gallop spent much of yesterday trying to resolve the issue between the Broncos and the Storm over $113,000 of outstanding legal fees.
Both clubs are refusing to pay because it would be included as part of their 2011 salary caps. Storm CEO Ron Gauci says he is happy to release Inglis to Souths.
"We released him on compassionate grounds to go to Brisbane but Souths is fine by us as long as the legal bill gets paid," he said.
