NRL derail Ingliss deal

Boyd was bought when Broncos didn't want him. Nightingale has come through the system, and couldn't crack it ahead of Wendell last year. We bought back Gaz and offloaded 3 players for him. Coops has been with the club for 11 years. Soward, Hornby, Young, Creagh and Scott are all sh*t according to everyone else. Weyman bought from Canberra when he couldn't crack the bench.

Which of these players were brought to saints at the quality they are now? I'd really love to know your thoughts on this.

2010 Steelers - Oh that hurts - nearly as much as it must have hurt Souths missing out on making the semis yet again - NOT.

Of the 13 listed - 8 are Dragons local juniors. And yes it is good coaching. Most other team supporters laughed when Saints bought Weyman, same with Priddis and for what they paid for both those players would not even begin to cover Burgess's price.

I just think it's a bit suss imo that 2 souffs players in Burgess and Asotasi would walk into the Steelers team, with Sutton, Dave Taylor and Issacc Luke probably making your bench.

Would the addition of GI to the Souths line up change the parity of the line ups in Souths favour? This why only stupid or honest teams suffer the most under the cap.

Didn't think you could name a player that was better than what he is now that he plays at saints.

However, I could go through 2/3 of your team and name players that you have signed on decent money past their prime.

Surely even you (lol) can see that these players were bought by the club and developed into the players they are now, not bought as decent players and turned to sh*t like 2/3 of souths team.

"The NRL said the third-party agreements involving Inglis do not comply with the salary cap rules as they are not independent of the club. The statement said the third-party agreements involving Inglis were drafted by South Sydney and were in some cases revised with the sponsor by the club with no involvement from Inglis' manager."

Surely since Inglis' unveiling many other independent third-party sponsors would have come forward wanting to sponsor him given the interest he's created. These new third-party deals would not have been sollicited by the club so how could the NRL block them?

Anyway by releasing Crocker and Wesser we'll fit him in.

Don't confuse the premiers management with the loud mouthed imbeciles running Souths. The dragons haven't paid overs for their players in winning our 16th premiership unlike you jokes who paid overs for nuffies like Asotasi, Wesser, crocker,Taylor,
Ross etc etc they're all second rate rubbish.
Funniest or should say most embarrassing thing is you trumpeted the signing of the fat lazy lump before he was registered with the Nrl now you'll have to offload some depth to keep him and judging by your pathetic efforts last season in trying to make the semis you ain't got no real depth as the fill in players simply aren't up to it. Now I know what the rooster fans mean when they say Souths are the laughing stock of the game.

It's not good interest. But then again, you do give Gabe Watson free membership so you can get in the media though him. Not all companies think any interest is good interest.

The interest surrounding GI has led to four primetime matches in the opening 5 rounds (the premiers have none) and a spike in membership and sponsorship. All positives for the club. The Watson free membership is bullsh*t and you know it.

All cubs have had a spike in membership and sponsorship, not just ones parading fat inglis around in their colours. Oh really? None you say?

Souths won't win a premiership until they get a decent coach and coaching staff.It doesn't matter who they sign until this happens.Souths remind me of Saint's when we had all the so called star players and still couldn't win it.Looking at your line-up in 2010 Souths were a top four side at the least but still missed the eight.I like seeing all the traditional clubs doing well as it's great for the game but one player (Inglis) won't change Souths chances..........a decent coach will.

SOUTH Sydney have told three high-profile players they are free to leave the club as they aim to free up $500,000 in their salary cap to sign Greg Inglis.

The NRL yesterday refused to register Inglis's contract with Souths because of concerns over a number of third-party sponsorship deals. The Rabbitohs are now scrambling to free up space in their salary cap and have told Beau Champion, Ben Lowe and Michael Crocker that they can look for a new club.
The NRL yesterday claimed Souths had negotiated third-party payments for Inglis without the knowledge of his manager Allan Gainey.
"The National Rugby League has today advised the South Sydney club that it must include the full value of a number of third-party agreements relating to Greg Inglis within the salary cap," the NRL said in a statement.
"The effect of the decision is that South Sydney will be required to advise the NRL as to how the club proposes complying with the $4.1 million cap in 2011 before Greg Inglis's contract will be registered.

"The announcement follows a legal assessment of a number of documents [some received as late as Friday afternoon] and a request from South Sydney that the NRL's determination be announced at the earliest possible opportunity."
The Sunday Telegraph has also learned:
* The contract submitted to the NRL only had Inglis being paid $190,000 under the salary cap, with the rest of his deal made up from third-party payments;
* The NRL wants Inglis to come under the cap at no less than $500,000 in a move that will force the club to offload $310,000 worth of playing talent from its roster;
* The Rabbitohs have told Champion, Lowe and Crocker that they will be released from the final year of their contracts should they be able to find a deal elsewhere.
It leaves the Rabbitohs relying on other clubs to sign at least two of their players to fit Inglis under the cap.
The Cowboys, Eels and Melbourne Storm are understood to be the only clubs with money left to sign any of the Rabbitohs players.
Champion's manager Sam Ayoub yesterday said his client would consider leaving the club if he could find a suitable deal.
"At this point in time Beau has a contract with the Rabbitohs for 2011," Ayoub said. "He will honour that contract. In saying that, if Beau can secure a suitable longer-term deal at another club we will consider it.
"Souths have a number of players coming off contract at the end of next year and they are in a position where they may not be able to keep them."
NRL chief executive David Gallop said the game's governing body would not make any concessions for Inglis or the Rabbitohs.
The Test star is now facing an uncertain future and may be forced to leave the code.
"Given the circumstances under which Greg became available to South Sydney, nobody can have been under any doubt about the importance of ensuring his contract complied with the cap," Gallop said.
"The NRL had already required the Broncos to include third-party agreements within their calculation of the contract value and was insisting legal fees also be included when those negotiations ceased.
"South Sydney had been advised to have all proposed offers reviewed by the NRL before making any commitments. They chose not to do so and it has taken some time to access all details of the agreements.
"That said, the cap has to apply fairly to all clubs and one club cannot be allowed to do what others were prevented from doing.
"The rules on third-party deals are clear."
The Rabbitohs also issued a statement saying they were disappointed with the NRL's decision to block the Inglis deal.
"The South Sydney Rabbitohs are disappointed and disagree with the decision of the NRL to include some of Greg Inglis's third-party agreements in the club's salary cap for the 2011 season," the Rabbitohs statement said.
"The Rabbitohs will assess their salary cap position as determined by the NRL's salary cap auditor today and make a decision on a path forward over the next seven days.
"The Rabbitohs will do everything they can to keep Greg Inglis in rugby league."
Souths CEO Shane Richardson was unwilling to comment while Gainey did not return calls yesterday.

NRL says no to Inglis, so sudden player sale looms

SOUTH SYDNEY face the prospect of shedding players to accommodate Greg Inglis after the NRL blocked his proposed move to Redfern.
In a scathing assessment of the Rabbitohs' handling of the transfer saga, the NRL has insisted the full value of a number of Inglis's third-party agreements be covered by the salary cap. The Sun-Herald understands four contracts were scrutinised by cap auditor Ian Schubert:
❏ A $100,000 deal revolving around Aboriginal welfare with the NSW Health Department;
Advertisement: Story continues below
❏ A $50,000 deal with ANZ Stadium;
❏ A $25,000 deal with WA Spit Roast;
❏ A $25,000 deal with an inner-city car dealership.
All of them raised red flags at league headquarters.
Despite being warned not to make announcements until the NRL scrutinised the contracts, Souths co-owner Russell Crowe boasted about the $1.8 million deal to an audience of millions on US television's Tonight Show with Jay Leno last month.
Schubert found deals submitted as ''arm's length'' third-party agreements were in fact drafted by the club and, in some cases, revised with the sponsor without the involvement of Inglis's manager, Allan Gainey. The contracts were also in place before a playing contract was signed.
Souths issued a brief statement yesterday expressing their disappointment with the decision and their desire to keep Inglis in league.
Their best chance of pushing the deal through is to offload at least one of their star players, something Souths CEO Shane Richardson initially vowed not to do. It is understood some of the club's biggest names are on heavily back-ended deals next year, with Roy Asotasi on $450,000, Michael Crocker $300,000 and John Sutton $400,000. Beau Champion was recently shopped to Parramatta but they baulked at his asking price. The Eels are more interested in another Souths centre, Taioalo ''Junior'' Vaivai. Utility Jamie Simpson and fullback Rhys Wesser (about $160,000) could be other options to be released.
Given that Inglis only became a free agent as a result of the Storm salary cap debacle, the NRL has taken its time considering the issue. Yet Souths pressed the league for a speedy determination - although some legal documents were only made available on Friday afternoon - prompting yesterday's announcement.
''Given the circumstances under which Greg became available to South Sydney, nobody can have been under any doubt about the importance of ensuring his contract complied with the cap,'' said NRL chief executive David Gallop.
''The NRL had already required the Broncos to include third-party agreements within their calculation of the contract value and was insisting legal fees also be included when those negotiations ceased. South Sydney had been advised to have all proposed offers reviewed by the NRL before making any commitments.
"They chose not to do so, and it has taken some time to access all details of the agreements.
"It is unfortunate for Greg that he is in the middle of a difficult situation, and I assured him this week that these issues do not reflect on him but that they are matters for clubs in assessing the offers that they make.
''He is one of the game's most highly valued players, and we have assured him of that in no uncertain terms. That said, the cap has to apply fairly to all clubs, and one club cannot be allowed to do what others were prevented from doing. The rules on third-party deals are clear.
"We have worked with clubs and players by substantially increasing the amount that sponsors can pay players through the $300,000 marquee player allowance in 2011 but without rules on third-party agreements there would be no point in having a salary cap system."
The Sun-Herald revealed earlier this month that Souths might attempt to resolve the impasse by legally challenging the existence of the salary cap, with their chairman, Nick Pappas, likely to lead the charge.
The only NRL club with enough money left under the cap for Inglis is Parramatta, although it is unclear if coach Stephen Kearney, who worked with Inglis at the Storm, is interested.
Inglis, who reneged on an agreement with Brisbane, is still no closer to finding a home for next season.
The NRL's decision also clouds the future of New Zealand hooker Issac Luke, who was poised to extend his contract until the end of 2015.

For me the (attempted) signing of Inglis by our team has turned in to a disaster. It has made the people running our club look like idiots. May be they are.

Right from the beginning of this saga, things have not gone to plan. Shane Richardson should have expected the NRL to pay more then just close attention to this deal.

Yet the club makes this big announcement that Inglis will be at Souths and we wont have to release any players to get him signed.

Well right now we don't have him signed and if we are to get him signed we will have to release some players. Mr Richardson, who is looking very stupid now?

I am not sure all this effort to get Inglis signed is worth it. I have doubts we will get full value out of Inglis. Will he be here longer then 3 years?

For me I think its time for the club to move on and let Inglis go

Sensible post. Agree with most of it. Most on here want to pile sh*t on the NRL.

Lowe was one of your best last year, champion goes ok. Crocker for Inglis is a no brainer, but might need to offload someone else.

I don't think any centre is worth 500k, especially not Inglis at this point. 3 years ago, maybe. Not now.

I dont think anyone would be stupid enough to take Crocker for what Souths are paying for him.

Paying overs has finally caught up with the club. This practise was ok when the Bunnies were consistantly winning spoons and needed to appease the old faithful by buying a has been for way more than he was worth. Now that the club can attract good players those golden goose deals are making gooses of the club officials responible for them.

$400k for Sutton? No wonder this bloke hasn't improved, he has no incentive to improve other than hold his spot in 1st grade. Sutton wil never be on better coin than that. I like John Sutton he does some good things but he is no way worth $400k per season.

Champion I suspect would be on stupid money as well. Good luck unloading him.

Champion has been worth the money, there was no better centre last year before he got injured

We won't be getting rid of Champion for a number of reasons:

1. He's a great player
2. We will potentially have no experienced centres playing at the beginning of next year's season (assuming GI doesn't heal enough and isn't match fit)
3. I doubt his money is that big atm he has really only broken out of his shackles this year
4. He's one of our most marketable players. We can hardly send Sandow on the footy show for instance

If we get rid of someone:

1. Wesser - his contract was only a one year extension, and only given after a lot of haggling. That might mean it's not worth as much though
2. Crocker - two much money for someone who has never shown his worth

Ideally I'd like it if they could rearrange their sponsorships outside the cap.

Agreed.

What have Ben Lowe and Beau Champion done to get shafted? Beau has passion for Souths, you can see that every time he scores. Is he a Souths junior? What about loyalty to your players? Not a good look for Souths.

How come the Storm don't have to pay the rest of Inglis's contract that we don't make up?

His base contract was $50k from everything I saw , If you think he was on a $140K base that late in the year then you are delusional.

you should get your facts right ... the Dragons wanted to register Gasnier under the cap at 50k for the remainder for 2010 before bumping him up to 400k+. however the NRL refused to register a cointract for him for this year unless he was under the cap at 120k.
