The South Sydney Rabbitohs have announced that Star City will be the Club’s major HOME corporate partner in a new three-year deal.
The major corporate partnership agreement will see the Star City logo appear on the front of the Rabbitohs home jersey, as both organisations work towards being major players in rugby league and entertainment.
Star City is currently undergoing an $860 million redevelopment aimed at transforming the harbourside location into a total entertainment destination.
Plans include a 4,000 capacity events centre which can readily convert to a 1,500 seat banquet setting. Combined with a refurbished Lyric Theatre, this will allow Sydney to attract top acts and theatrical productions from around the world.
Leading chefs from Australia and overseas, including the highly respected David Chang from New York, have been signed up to open several new restaurants. Most of these restaurants and a new nightclub will overlook the harbour through the signature glass façade along Pirrama Road.
Star City is also building a new five-star lifestyle hotel which will be Sydney’s first five-star since the 2000 Olympics and will set a new benchmark for luxury accommodation.
Star City will join international brands De’Longhi, V8 Supercars and Kenwood as major corporate partners of the Rabbitohs.
South Sydney Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson says there are many synergies between the two organisations.
“We’re excited about having Star City join the Rabbitohs family as we share the same aspirations about our future,” Mr Richardson said.
“The redevelopment plans that we’ve seen will certainly put Star City on the map as a premium entertainment venue for the world’s top acts and leading chefs.
“We look at ourselves in a similar way. We have re-invented ourselves over the past five years under Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes à Court’s ownership and we are working towards establishing ourselves as the number one sporting Club in Australia.
“We’re leading the way off the field in the NRL and we believe we are on the verge of leading the way on the field too.
“We’ve become competitive, but with the help of Star City, our other major corporate partners in De’Longhi, V8 Supercars and Kenwood, as well as our Members, we are well on our way to taking the next step to becoming dominant.
“We welcome Star City into our Rabbitohs family and it is sure to be an exciting three years ahead for both organisations.”
Tabcorp Casinos CEO Larry Mullin said the sponsorship arrangement came at a time of significant change for both the Rabbitohs and Star City.
“Just as South Sydney is building a team that will ensure they are a major force in the NRL, we believe the transformation underway at Star City will create an engaging venue with destination dining and nightlife that Sydney will be proud of,” Mr Mullin said.
“Star City and the Rabbitohs both have ambitions to be the best and we look forward to a productive and successful relationship over the years ahead.”

Try as hard as I possibly can I cannot find any media mention of the announcemnt. I find that hard to believe.

As is the norm with this sort of announcements you never hear a monetory value. But it would be interesting to know.

Star City wont get my patronage.
Prefer to spend my dollars at a real establishment in the South Sydney district that actually helps out the community.

with An Anasta face you must be a jealous Rooster supporter. Oh then again , you could be from a number of clubs now .

anyway I really see no hypocrisy . Souths leaders have decided NO pokies in the leagues club , they wanted the club zone to be family friendly etc. Nothing has changed. Souths never said they were anti gambling and that gambling should be illegal etc . there is a time and place for all.

You know that Souths decided not to have female cheer leaders too . i am surprised you have not called out Souths as hypcocrits for allowing females to their games.

Look I was at the press conference, at StarCity, And a smart ass reporter asked the same question , and rusty said,

we are the football club, we can only advise that the leagues club that they should not have poker machines,

people have to understand that the leagues club and the football club are seperate identitys, and saying that he doesnt like it but sports betting is every where not only in oz but all over the world

Robbie what your forgetting is that both the Football Club & the Leagues Club are both owned by Crowe, Holmes a Court and/or Associates.
If Rusty said this at the press conference then he has clearly carefully considered his words when this question was asked.
I have my own reasons as to why Rusty & HaC didn't want poker machines at the Leagues Club & it had nothing to do with a commitment to the health & well being of the community.

hey but I dont think that he has full control of the club, they still have to vote on the issue with the other members and club voted on having poker machines, plus I think that the casino came looking for the rabbitohs,

Of course the membership is seperate but i'm talking about the actual people who have a controlling interest in both the FC club & the LC club.
I think you'll find that Crowe, Holmes a Court & Richardson have got their fingers in everything to do with both clubs.

The Leagues Club is not owned by Crowe / Holmes a Court or any of their associates. They have absolutely no part in the ownership or running of the Leagues club.
The origional "no-pokies" plan only involved the football club being a guarantor for potential lost revenue from banning the machines.
The Leagues club is 100% owned by it's members.

That explanation doesn't make sense.

The celebrity co-owners of the South Sydney football club are putting forward a radical proposal for gambling-obsessed New South Wales.
Actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court say they want to get rid of their club's 160 poker machines because they are worried about the social cost of gambling.
Ban the pokies. It sounds so simple.
But this is NSW - you can barely find a club or a pub in the state without at least one room devoted to poker machines and reaping literally millions of dollars.
Today the NSW Government has extended gambling in the state by allowing hotels to introduce the Keno lottery game.
It's a lucrative business, so when the owner of a football club suggests that the associated leagues club could do without pokies, directors get nervous.
South Sydney Leagues Club chairman Bill Alexious-Hucker says the club earns around $2.5 million per year from the pokies.
"It's a lot of money to a club or to a business... I'd hate to think that in my business we lost a client worth $2.5 million to us," he said.
"It would be very hard to go out and find a new one."
But that's exactly what Mr Crowe and Mr Holmes a Court want to see happen at Souths when the leagues club, now being redeveloped, opens next March.
Mr Holmes a Court says poker machines are bad for the community.
"It's an incredible social cost when you're in an area like we are in Redfern, which is trying to transform itself, trying to improve and grow," he said.
"When you're trying to do that there is such a social cost that comes with poker machines that it's just not appropriate for us to be supporting them."
Mr Alexio-Hucker is not dismissing the idea.
"If we could make it work, it would be fabulous as a beacon, say, of an example of a club that can survive long-term without the need for poker machines," he said.
Mr Crowe and Mr Holmes a Court have transformed South Sydney after buying the football club last year. It is now a high-profile business with added Hollywood glamour and, after many lean years, some success on the field.
But the football club and the leagues club are still very much separate entities and Mr Alexiou-Hucker wants to see a solid proposal on paper before getting rid of the pokies.
"It's just an expression of a view, I guess, at the moment, just like any other member of the leagues club can raise, because it's not based on anything, on a business sense," he said.
"Morally, yes, but on a business issue, we haven't seen anything that the board can base their decision on."
Mr Holmes a Court says the money the club currently earns from pokies can be made in other ways.
"We've got to provide an alternative - it's not going to be an empty room," he said.
"There'll be other activities and other things that take place in these clubs, and that's what we've got to try and promote."
But Mr Alexiou-Hucker wants greater detail.
"To take it to the board, you need to come up with numbers; you need to prove to us that the club can sustain its existence based on your views of no poker machines in the leagues club," he said.
The vision of a club with no pokies has been embraced by Federal Treasurer Peter Costello.
"I think what they've announced is fantastic and all credit to them," he said.
"I hope the club goes from strength to strength. We've got enough poker machines in Australia."
But not enough Keno it seems - at least not in New South Wales.

Crowe, Holmes a Court push for pokie ban at South Sydney Rugby Club

Australian Broadcasting Corporation
Broadcast: 19/09/2007
Reporter: David Lawrence

Movie star Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court say they want to ban poker machines at their South Sydney Leagues Club.

Transcript

TONY JONES: Well, Australia's addiction to gambling is back in the spotlight with the movie star Russell Crowe and the businessman Peter Holmes a Court, leading a push to get rid of poker machines in their South Sydney Leagues Club. The plan was welcomed by anti-gambling campaigners desperate to see the idea taken up across Australia. But some officials are warning that clubs could go under without the revenue from the pokies.

David Lawrence reports.

DAVID LAWRENCE: It's a dubious honour, but when it comes to poker machines, Australia is a world leader. More than 20 per cent of the planet's pokies can be found in the pubs, clubs and casinos across the nation. On a per capita basis, about five times as many as the United States. Punters spend and lose billions of dollars and state governments receive billions of dollars in taxes. And for many of the clubs, licensed to run the machines, they provide the income that allows them to keep going. South Sydney Leagues Club was one of them, with the machines raising up to $7 million a year. But now the club's new high-profile owners say they're ready to say goodbye to the cash cows. Actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court, are asking the club's board to abolish the poker machines.

PETER HOLMES A COURT, SOUTHS CO-OWNER: I make it very clear I'm not judging other people, I'm not judging other clubs. It doesn't feel right for me, it doesn't feel right for Russell, it doesn't feel right for our football club.

DAVID LAWRENCE: Half the club's gambling revenue comes from people on social security benefits, but Mr Holmes a Court says they're making a business decision.

PETER HOLMES A COURT: The reality is, there's a bunch of people who don't like going to clubs, that don't like bringing their family into venues that have poker machines and we're hoping by doing this we're attracting a whole new audience.

DAVID LAWRENCE: The radical plan has been applauded by welfare groups who see pokies as a major culprit in Australia's addiction to gambling.

REVEREND TIM COSTELLO, WORLD VISION CEO: Look, I think this is a match struck in a very dark place. That's the first sign of a club saying, "We're going to take the community seriously".

DAVID LAWRENCE: Campaigners say the proposal needs to be copied across Australia.

NICK XENOPHON MLC, SOUTH AUSTRALIAN "NO POKIES" INDEPENDENT: Pokies are the electronic locusts of the 21st century, the way they've stripped Australians of billions of dollars, the impact it has on communities, the fact that so much of pokies' losses come from problem gamblers, that this is something that requires urgent national action.

DAVID LAWRENCE: The move comes as the New South Wales Government agrees to expand Keno to hundreds of hotels across the state.

PETER COSTELLO, TREASURER: What are these Labor governments thinking of? Having flooded Australia with poker machines, we're now going to double up with Keno competitions. There's got to be an end to this.

DAVID LAWRENCE: The Government has been accused of doing favours for the hotel industry in return for millions of dollars it's received in political donations.

LEE RHIANNON MLC, NEW SOUTH WALES GREENS: They've wanted it desperately, they gave donations, they've got their Keno, is there a connection?

MORRIS IEMMA: No, rubbish, absolute rubbish.

DAVID LAWRENCE: The game will be phased into New South Wales pubs over the next few years, merely adding, campaigners argue, to the problems that will continue until Australia's state governments are weaned off their reliance on gambling taxes.
