Sporting and mining magnate Nathan Tinkler has withdrawn his $100 million takeover bid for the Newcastle Knights and said he would have no further dealings with the rugby league club under the current management.

Tinkler and the Tinkler Sports Group management team were due to meet Knights chief executive Steve Burraston and chairman Rob Tew at 2pm today to resolve their differences.

However, a furious and frustrated Tinkler told The Newcastle Herald that the meeting has been cancelled and his offer withdrawn.

Fed up with what he perceived to be procrastination by Knights management since they rejected his initial $10 million proposal three months ago, which he upgraded on January 17 to up to $100 million for the next 10 years, Tinkler said he had done all he could but had had enough.
Burraston and Tew have called a media conference at 2.30pm today.

Tinkler has taken control of the Newcastle Jets football team until 2020.

I have to presume that the "old boys club" there at Newcastle were looking at trying to carve out something for themselves before going back to Tinkler. Though I reckon if he went to most other clubs he would have the same problem too.

Tinkler is seriously trying to lowball them - he is offering as little as $2 million a year for ten years. He spills more than that when he's at KFC.

League franchises are like TV stations. They dont have to rate, they are expensive because there are normally not for sale. Not even the Sharks. Do you think Gerry harvey hasn't been down there sniffing?

when the new TV deal is done, clubs will start to break even and maybe show a profit.

He wasn't offering anything. His 10m sponsorship per year included tickets and memberships.... They already get that.

He was trying to get a free club.

sure enough he wants the membership and sponsorship to be included every year in his deal,but tinkler also is guaranteeing 10 million a year,so therefore if they only get 8 million a year,he will tip in the other 2,not a bad offer in my book,but it wont happen,cause at the knights it's allabout a job for the boys attitude,the sooner they go down the drain the better.

The devil's in the detail and we may never know the truth. I think Tinkler is a wicked businessman and would have almost guaranteed a successful Knights but if they turned him down, there is a reason. Shame for them but good on them not just bending over and biting the pillow!!
