The Real Intentions Of NEWSLTD

As we all know, the much vaunted "Independent Commission" is getting closer to being established as the NRL's governing body. This was brought about by the decision from NEWSLTD to relinquish it's part-ownership of the NRL. They decided to do this even though they were not contractually obligated to do so for another few years. This was, in their own words, "for the good of the game".

Is anyone buying that? Seems like a lot of you are.

They are a business. They have proven time and again that rugby league is nothing more to them than another revenue stream. Which is fine by me; we live in a capitalist society and the more money the competition makes, the better for all involved.

It's the timing that has me worried. A new deal for the broadcast rights of the NRL will be negotiated very soon, and there are at least six (Brisbane, PNG, Mackay, Ipswich, Central Coast and Perth) teams bidding for the rights to join the national comp.

How many current NRL teams do you think NEWS will need to bring over (as well as these teams) if they wanted to start a rival competition? Probably only six to begin with. That would make a twelve team comp, and I assume more new teams would be granted a licence as needed.

If this process has already begun, they would stand an excellent chance of seriously damaging the NRL when it comes to negotiating a new broadcast deal in 2013.

Think it'll never happen? They were defeated in '97/98. But they weren't destroyed. What if they've spent the last 12 years carefully planning for their next chance? I know I sound like some dude in the Rebel Alliance talking about the Sith building a new Death Star, but the two scenarios are equally scary to me.

The fact is I don't trust their intentions in pulling out of the game before they were contractually obligated to do so. If you think I'm way off; ask yourself why they are yet to sign a "no-compete" agreement, which would once and for all prevent them from doing what I've just described.

They want their own competition, people. And they're building it RIGHT NOW.

I'm only a lowly noob, so please move this thread if it's in the wrong place.

Also, I'm a Broncos supporter and yes, I realise they are owned by NEWS, and will continue to be even after they give up part-ownership of the NRL. Which is why me really worry.

A few days ago I would have agreed. But the death of Osama will mean it won't happen. He was going to be the new competitions CEO with the loch ness monster his media manager.

Conspiracy theories ftw.

Also, as a paranoid shut-in, Nessie would make the worst PR manager in the universe.

No you are not. We are all equal here, mate!

F*ck, you are a lowly noob after all. Silly me!

But if you can think with such clarity - you are most likely NOT a noob! Cool!

News angling against Quayle is proof that there is not a brain cell in the entire organisation.

I wish those Navy Seals would launch into Rupert Murdoch's compound.

Their main objective was controling first and last rights for as long as possible so they could offer bargain basement prices for PayTV. News ltd (along with their good buddies PBL and Telstra) have already secured this as part of the IC until 2027.

I think the reason they are dragging their feet over a non-compete cause is they are using that as a bargaining chip to get something else they want from the ARL/QRL. I don't think they would start a breakaway comp again - SL cost them an aweful lot of money (which they have made back by undervalued TV deals and a $10m cut each year).

They will eventually sign a non-compete clause, I only wonder what the ARL will give up to get it.

NEWSLTD want to suck every profit out of the NRL at a very low premium.. hence why the most popular program on FOXTEL doesn't have it own channel like AFL, even though half our Toyota Cup games rate higher most weeks than AFL games.

NEWSLTD don't care about NRL. If only Optus Vision had survived abit longer.

They are getting out now because it's their best chance to steal the TV rights for another decade. If they waited till, say, 2013 or 14 the end of the 1997 deal would be clsoe and the ARL and clubs would just wait till they took total ownership of the NRL in 2017 and News would have to phuk off altogether. This way they get their first and last bid rights till 2027. Plus they have also secured their puppet Gallop his job for three more years and ensured the club they still own, Melbourne, gets extra funding the other clubs won't get.

The non-compete clause is something they are using to get even more out of the deal. They are saying it's worth a lot of money so they deserve something in return. I'd hate to think what.

News Ltd have been asked to sign a document when the leave the game that says they agree to not a start a rugby league competiton in direct competiton to the NRL or what ever it will be called when it's goes independent. At this stage they won't sign the document. It seems if News Ltd lose the rights to show league in the pay tv market they may infact try superleague again, as silly as it might sound i think they have that in the back of thier mind or they want a exit deal that includes paytv rights for the next 5 years at a discount rate.

This may sound like fantasy, but this has been my take on it all:

My thoughts have been that News wanted out of League all of a sudden, because they did not want to be tarnished with the conflict of interest brush (again) the next time the TV rights came up (ie in the coming year).

I think they believed that Telstra's stake in Fox would be shaken out as a result of the NBN negotiations, so they wanted to be ready to pounce. A conflict of interest with the NRL, could of potentially been an unwanted thorn in this regard, real or not.

Unless something will happen that I have missed, that stake will not be coming out.

That tells me that there is less pressure on News to exit imminently, although it still must be a pain in the arse for them.

I think they are now trying to extract more out of the game, especially with this exclusivity bullshit out to 2027 or whatever. The NRL needs to get them to drop that out of the deal, it is ridiculous considering that they are the ones that started the war in the first place.

Mate, I wouldn't put it past them. Why don't they just sign the 'no competition clause' and move on?

I wouldn't trust them at all. They have already sucked our game dry and they are trying to position themselves to do it again, albeit in a less obvious manner.

The IC is not some great saviour...it wont change much at all.

Nothing needs saving. The game is booming. Hence the interest to lock up long term influence.

The last time the game was this healthy News Ltd launched SuperLeague.

Yet.

And unlike The (other) King and obl, this theory has played out before, just twelve years ago, in fact.

Sorry if I have doubts about your inside knowledge of NEWSLTD's long-term plans ;-)
