Isn't it amazing how the NRL has chased people left, right and centre over the Bulldogs-Cowboys betting scandal - a scandal where nobody ended up collecting.

Yet nothing has come of the Storm wooden spoon betting scandal where money WAS collected. Obviously not serious enough to be persued to the nth degree like the Tandy thing was.

Mmm..interesting.

So, a number of players received significant payments over and above what they signed, one player double what he signed, it was done in some cases via them receiving payments directly from other sources, yet they had no idea???

Man.

WHO f**kING CARES IF THERE IS ANY EVIDENCE THAT THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING??? IGNORANCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE!!

They, as adults, have a responsibility to be aware of their own affairs!!

FFS this annoys the shit out of me. A f**king legend of the game like Nathan Hindmarsh was denied a premiership by these merkins!!

I had to laugh at this when it was reported in The Age and how the key finding that they chose to report on was that Waldron be "blacklisted". Tell us something we don't know FFS!!

Is Matt Hanson the Jayco Owner?

I know one of the board members that got the sack was. It is a shame because he looked to be the white knight to buy the Storm off NEWS one day.

No. Gerry Ryan owns Jayco and is the tenth richest man in Australia. They are still a back of shorts sponsor but not sure for how much longer as he also runs/sponsors a Tour de France team.

Peter Maher, another of the sacked non-News aligned directors, is on radio down here. He is also minted. Wouldn't be surprised to see the both of them make a go of it together and buy the club together one day.

Matt Hanson was bought over to the Storm from St. Kilda not long after Waldron took over in 2005.

Lol @ 17 under "The Players"

Jeez I wonder who that was

"should have been deafening"... well... maybe for anyone else

Yeah but the player I am thinking of isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and will struggle for a career once his playing days are over. I get the strong impression his parents would do most of the negotiating with managers while he sat in the corner playing with his Hotwheels cars, then they'd usher him over when they'd settled on a contract to sign the dotted line in scrawled crayon. Being asked to do it twice for said player would have not seemed strange at all.

Good to see that the players had no knowledge of the rort. A LOT of apologies are due from many here at LU.

My question is that given we have the dates of when the contracts were lodged for various players, can you tee up when contracts were signed for players to when the Storm announced the signings?

If you could, then you can actually identify who the several few were that knew, particularly in reference to point 16 in the report.

The biggest conspiracy is the one unfolding right now. Why have these findings not been turned over to the police, why are the league not trying to get criminal charges laid? There are a couple of executives and a couple of player managers that have a case to answer? Amazing how quiet the telegraph is about it too. I would like to know why charges are not being laid, why is justice not being done?

I've tried to find some of the player signings via the interwebs, but can't quite lock down dates.

I really want to get my hands on an uncensored report. Freedom of Information act anyone?

Victoria Police opt not to lay charges after ending Melbourne Storm investigation

Brent Read and Peter Kogoy
From: The Australian
May 07, 2011 12:00AM

HAVING scoured more than 20,000 emails and navigated a legal minefield, the NRL will next week release its long-awaited report into the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal.

The report, compiled by salary cap auditor Ian Schubert and the NRL's legal team, is expected to lay bare the depth of deception involved in the biggest rort in Australian sporting history.

News of the impending release of the NRL's investigation came as Victoria Police yesterday concluded their investigation into the scandal, electing not to lay charges despite finding some offences related to the falsification of statutory declarations.

NRL chief executive David Gallop confirmed his organisation was ready to release its findings after an investigation stretching back more than a year.

"We will be in position to release a final report next week," Gallop said.

"That report will highlight the lengths the Melbourne Storm went to to breach the salary cap. It's a reminder that if you engage in this type of activity, there is a high likelihood your dealings will come under the spotlight.

"We have reviewed 20,000 emails and to say that they were eye-opening is an understatement."

The Storm has already been penalised for the salary cap scandal, having been stripped of two premierships and three minor premierships. The club was also docked all premiership points last season, fined $500,000, forced to return $1.1 million in prizemoney and to shed several players, including Greg Inglis, Ryan Hoffman and Brett White.

Brian Waldron, the former Storm chief executive who was described as the architect of the rorts, declined to comment yesterday when told of the police findings.

Several player-managers remain under investigation by the NRL's player agent accreditation committee. Police charges, however, will not be laid against anyone involved in the scandal after Victoria Police concluded no fraud offences were committed.

"After a long and thorough assessment, investigators have found no fraud-related offences have been committed," a police statement read.

"During the investigation police identified some offences relating to the falsification of statutory declarations.

"Some of these declarations were made outside of Victoria.

"We have decided not to pursue this line of inquiry as to do so would be extremely resource intensive and there is a high probability it would not result in any charges being laid."

Waldron and key staffers Matt Hanson, Paul Gregory, Peter O'Sullivan and Cameron Vale were reportedly at the centre of the police investigation.

The statement said the "criminal environment" was not the most suitable way to proceed but "other regulatory agencies" could still take action.

The NRL at the time revealed that the Storm had breached the salary cap by $1.7m over five years by keeping a second set of payment books.

"We weren't relying on the Victorian police to take action," Gallop said.

"It's a reminder of why the league needs to have its own rules and penalties.

"Signing a false statutory declaration remains a very serious issue and people have gone to jail for it in NSW in recent times."

I think it's a JOKE that they cheated, paid the players overs, assembled a gun squad, and yet somehow are allowed to compete THIS YEAR with the players they wished to keep from that squad.

Should've voided everyone's contract, dropped the Storm's 2011 cap by the amount they rorted it by (ie, give them $1.5mill less), force them to keep paying the players what was owed, and ONLY allow them to re-sign their now former players for the same amount they 'cheated' to pay them.
PERHAPS reduce their cap for the number of years they cheated it for?

Yes - if that happened the Storm would come second last this year (Canberra last) - but surely that's the price for systematic cheating?
