So Hayne the incumbent is beaten by a guy with 3 games this year! So why did Lewis not make it?? Very strange. A very poor forward pack'also named. Very poor team

The team is pathetic. How can you leave Hayne out?? When he's in form, he's the best player in the world.. he carved the opposition up in his last 2 games

I see Dugan's selection as a long term selection.

Ricky isn't just thinking of this series but 2012, 13 and 14 as well.

Don't like it at all.
Mitchell Pearce - NO,
Michael Ennis - NO,
Brett Morris - NO,
Josh Dugan - NO,
I suspect Dean Young is there to play dummy half if Ennis does nothing again.

At first I thought this team was awful but once going through it one by one, I think they will give a decent account of themselves. Heres my analysis:

1.Dugan-Toss of the coin job between him and Hayne. Although his positioning is better and he does look dangerous bringing the ball back.
2.Brett Morris-Obvious selection. With no Gordon Ferguson was the only other contender.
3.Micheal Jennings- Has looked dangerous at this level before and if given any space can blow a game wide open.
4.Mark Gasnier- Has played well this season and brings experience to the backline.
5.Aku Uate-Can blow any game apart perhaps the easiest selection within the team.
6.Jamie Soward-Has a great kicking game something NSW has missed the last few years.
7.Mitchell Pearce-Bring experience to the team plus is a good defender. Mullen has outplayed him this year but was never a chance to take this spot.
8.Jason King-Has been here before and although there are better younger players, King brings much needed leadership to this young side. Must perform to retain his spot.
9. Micheal Ennis-Farah deserves this spot but is still carrying an injury so this is a fair call. Its one thing to change a prop mid week another to change a playmaker. Ennis also bring experience to a very inexperienced spine.
10.Kade Snowden-An obvious choice NSW's best prop. Will have good go forward all game and is a genuine enforcer.
11.Beau Scott- A tough player who will strike a strong defensive combo with Gaz.
12.Greg Bird-Is made for origin. Brings experience and a proven performance record at this level.
13.Paul Gallen. The games best lock and will be an inspirational skipper.

14.Ben Creagh- Is one of the games premier second rowers is yet to prove himself at this level. Although the fact NSW has choose four props this game may allow the second rowers to play there natural games.
15.Tim Mannah- Has been outstanding this year and performed well last year.
16.Trent Merrin-Perhaps not the first choice but proved himself earlier this year when filling Weymans role. Will not let anybody down.
17.Dean Young-Can fill a number of roles. Is not the first choice utility but like Merrin will not let anybody down. Has struggled so far this season but was outstanding last year.

One of the few balanced responses to the side so far

It's like NSW want to lose.

Don't mind the Dugan selection- he's one for the future. But Hayne should be on the wing (at least) ahead of either Morris or Uate. Morris is a rep myth and Uate played like cake today.

Jennings. LOL

Farah > Ennis in 2011

Also, I understand that the Dragons are the best team in the competition. But Merrin, Creagh and Young just should not be there, and Scott is only really there to be Soward's minder.

And 10. And 09. And previous to that also.

Ennis is a media myth. He's not a tough guy made for origin. He's a moron who gives away easy penalties and isnt that good a player.

Jason King and Trent Merrin are surprises. Merrins an outstanding prospect but unsure of his readiness, King I dont think has that extra level in him. Would've preferred Galloway to at least one of them. Also would've thought it would make more sense to start Young if he's going to play, and have somone on the bench (probably Gidley game two).

Creagh off the bench I like. Back row is good. Shame TLL isnt fit.

Still angry about the Hayne ommission...

One of the best players for NSW over the last 3 years and yet he still got overlooked at fullback for Gidley. Then he finally gets one game at fullback, and then gets the punt for a guy that has been just as ordinary. Facing 6 series losses in a row, you have to take a risk with a match winner.

This is what NSW just lost.

As they often say in cricket, form is temporary, class is permanent.

So there dropping Hayne is fair game but Mullen had no chance of getting Pearce's spot? Bullshit. Hayne has provan himself at Origin level Pearce hasn't.

There is no justification for Lewis missing out, he is one of the few players who was around when NSW were good who still has the form to warrant selection. Lewis is a great leader and a gifted footballer, the NSW selectors just have their heads up their arses as usual.

I can see where Ricky is going with his forwards - a couple of 110kg+ starting props and a couple of more mobile / working props off the bench. 3 tough, no nonsense starting back rowers, 2 of which are ballplayers. 1 big, mobile backrower off the bench and 1 utility forward / hooker. Still I think there are 2-3 better props than King.

Can people stop getting caught up with the hayne vs Dugan stuff?

He was overlooked for Brett Morris, which is even more ridiculous

So it's squarely Hayne's fault that Parramatta get smashed 11 on 11. Sound logic here.

lol @ injury plagued, that's fair defense for his horrible showing in 2 of his recent 3 games and puts him in good stead in 10 days time huh? And yeah, Dugan did so well covering Farah and Lui recently and Hayne so poorly covering JT that it makes complete sense to want Dugan there for those JT and Lockyer kicks.

Dugan has Hayne's strengths covered? Dugan can draw two defenders and put the ball on the chest of his outside man like Hayne does consistently? Dugan can slot himself into the backline, hold the ball out in front and cause defenses to collapse? Dugan can put a line runner outside their man with a pass? Dugan can bomb teams into submission from 30 and 40 out? Dugan has anything resembling Hayne's long kicking game? The only thing Dugan can almost match Hayne in is ball running and chips/grubbers, even then he's no Hayne.

Hayne is the reason why they are a man short in the first place, so of course it is his fault, nobody made Hayne act like an idiot and headbutt. What if that happens in the 70th minute in origin and we go without our fullback with the game on the line? Hayne is an immense talent but unless he gets that rubbish out of his game he will have ??? over him.

2 of Dugans last 3 games have been pretty good. The City Country he was good without being spectacular, and against the Storm he was one of the Raiders better players despite a couple of poor attempted tackles.

Having said all that I still feel Hayne could justifiably be disappointed but don't even pretend to think Hayne is even close to Dugan in terms of defensive positioning or under the high ball, because its a non event.

Hayne has a better kicking game, better passing game and he is stronger but Dugan is in the right spot at the right time more often than not. Dugan is not in the team to kick, Soward is the best general kicker in the game and Pearce is not too bad either.

Is it possible this is just to lull QLD into a false sense of security then name the actual team?

Stuart wrote an article before Origin 3 last year saying Pearce was the long term captain, he will not drop him. Mullen was only ever a chance for the 5/8 role plus Pearce outplayed him in City vs Country. Now we have chosen a spine we must retain it for a whole series.

No Lewis. Disappointing.

Not sure about Jenning's selection, he went alright in CvC but has done little else all year.

Can't see why Hayne omitted.

Ennis. Again. I don't know. Hopefully Hinchcliff will be replacing him in a year or two.

Don't agree with so many Dragons even if the team is in form. I wonder, did they start with the dragons roster and then start replacing players?

It's not as bad as when I first looked at it, but there appears to be some glaring mistakes. Selectors should be dropped if they can't perform.

you've just described the responsibilities of the halves

Hayne should be in the team, on the wing. If future in he makes the move to 5/8th for the Eels then he'll obviously be in with a good chance to play in the halves for NSW

no matter how you spin it, Dugan will always be the better fullback and thoroughly deserves his spot
