oh i'm sorry i wasn't aware i needed a medical degree to give my opinion on an internet forum. silly me.

anyone with any iota of life experience dealing with people suffering from depression and/or addiction can see the kid has serious problems.

Co morbidity is a real issues, you don't need to be a clinician based on what's been reported about Carney...

Dean - that's exactly the sort of attitude that contributes to the fact we have one of the highest rates of young male suicide in the whole world. hope you feel like a real hard ass.

Well you wrote a diagnosis so I thought for sure you had your MD.

The idiot has to want his problems to be fixed. Locking him up strapped to the bed in some asylum isn't going to do it. The guy has been given umpteen chances, offered many many avenues to help him once and for all.....and yet, he still can't control himself.

About time the Roosters board dropped the charade about wanting to help the kid.....always being there for him Why? He doesn't want help....he wants to live his life however he chooses. Cut him loose, and NRL make damn sure he isn't offered help and counselling whatever with any other club. He pooed his pants, let him walk around in em.

Are you two saying this BS with straight faces?

Ok so hypothetically Easts announce in a couple days that he's gone. You seriously think Rusty would get on the phone and try to recruit him?

Carney is a cancer. We'd never give him the privilege of wearing our jersey.
In a heart beat and then he will go and boast about it on American television. :| (notice the straight face?)

You can't be f*cking serious. You think Todd Carney deserves apathy and support like hundreds of depressed and addicted kids who do think about and commit suicide because they feel they have no other option? F*ck off.

Mental illness and depression are a serious problem in society.

They are also a convenient excuse for some.

You cannot force someone on a destructive path to change. The Raiders tried and he took the soft option because Todd was going to do what Todd was going to do.

If he wants to keep down this path nobody will be able to force a change and he will end up exactly like his father, a thouroughly reviled drunk whose constant abuse of alcohol was a major contributing factor to his onset of dimentia and his eventual demise

...I can see this post being a popular bump in things go a certain way out Bondi next Monday.
If South Sydney signs Todd Carney my name is Elton John.

Also, about Carney and his mental issues. I agree with Kiki. Trying to be macho is the worst things that can happen when it comes to men and problems like depression or bi-polar etc.

I don't know what the problem is with Carney, but it is bloody clear SOMETHING is the problem. Noone who is perfectly normal and in their mid 20s does the irresponsible things he does to throwaway what really is the dream life.

It's an interesting way we view behaviour and an inability to control oneself or put boundaries around your life that we now label it a mental illness.

I have met many many people through my work who were mentally ill and had substance issues and I've met many people in my life who are immature, disfunctional or have very little self control. The two are very very different. I don;t know Carney well enough to even begin to suggest which category he falls into and i would suggest neither does anyone else on here. if it is the former then he deseves the support of the game to get his illness worked on and would be best doing that away from the medias glare and the pressure of NRL top grade. if it is the latter he should be punted out of the game and the opportunity for him to damage the sports reputation removed. Either way it is hard to see a place in first grade NRL for him.

Go and spend a week in a juvenile detention centre, and see if you feel the same way.

Thousands of more deserving kids than Todd Carney get shutout and turned away from the help they need every day. Carney had so many offers of help etc to get over his problems....which I for one minute do not believe are mental deficiences or whatever....and he refused.

The guy always was a total d*ck, even growing up, and always will be. That is why he has no problem throwing it all away.....mental illness, my arse.

where did i say it was an excuse? it's a cause.

if he gets the proper help he needs and continues to mess up, then by all means, fire him.

until now the Roosters have only done the stop gap 'when can we get him back on the field but appear to be doing something' solutions. they haven't worked.

if they really want a fully fit and healthy Carney playing for them, they need to send him far away from Sydney and from the NRL until he's better.

if he relapses then it's a different story.

not everyone is built for the pressure of playing NRL footy. on field talent is only a small part of the equation. maybe he can't be saved, i don't know. but no one has really tried properly yet. he at least deserves that.

so because those poor kids are being denied the treatment they so desperately need, we should deny Todd too? that's flawless logic.

that's probably where he would be if he didn't have football.

i hate it when people dismiss mental illness as 'oh u dont have it as bad as some people so just get over it'.

that's like denying treatment for people with broken bones, because somewhere else there's someone who needed their leg amputated.

medical treatment shouldn't be scaled on who deserves it the most. that's absolute bullshit. medical problems physical or mental should be treated, no matter who the person is.

dear Roosters : Todd Carney is clearly suffering a severe mental illness and/or addiction. he needs to be sent to a treatment facility. away from footy. if you want to keep him, send him far FAR away from football.

you should have done this at the start of the season. you reap what you sow.

Give me a break. If Todd Carney wanted help the Roosters would give it to him. I fail to see how the roosters can be blamed in this instance. From all reports they've gone out of their way to make sure he's got all the support he needs, if he chooses to ignore it then what else can they do? Lock him up?

If they were to cut him I don't see how that's going to help Todd, he'd jump to the next club and repeat the cycle. I feel sorry for the roosters.

I doubt he's being denied anything. He's got access to whatever he likes.
