Time for a new jersey?

I read a little while back that there was some conjecture over how many premierships we have won, is it 16 for the St George side of the merger & 1 for the Illawarra side, or is it just 1 for the St George Illawarra era. Firstly I wore the St George jersey with pride during the mid 70's in the lower grades & I am still proud that todays side plays in the same colours as I did, but over time I am starting to believe that it may be time to unite both sides with their own jersey. Illawarra would not be in the competition today if it hadn't been for St George bailing them out financially, but St George would of found it difficult as a stand alone club & may have had to re - look at the merger with the Roosters or another club further down the track. To say we were lucky that both St George & the Illawarra executives had the foresight to merge is an understatement of huge proportions, if we take a look at how many Illawarra juniors have played for the joint venture compared to how many St George juniors have played, the difference would be staggering & weigh heavily on the Illawarra side. The way I see it is that we have won 1 premiership with many more to come, so why not design another jersey? it's not that we would have to change the colour, & myself as a fanatical St George supporter would feel just as proud to support it. If I have offended anyone from both sides of the fence I am sorry, but after 10 plus years of playing together there should'nt be a fence.

The current jersey represents St George Illawarra perfectly and Steelers die hards get a fair share of games in the scarlet jersey. I say leave it as is. Red V is the most beautiful thing in the game of rugby league and should never be lost o phased out from the NRL.

Some very good points. To me, a St George fan pre merger, the Red V can't ever be replaced. It's known the world over. From the typical fans point of view as well, the design of our jersey has been pretty similar for years now.....one year a collar, the next none, the next v-neck....only really the sponsors have changed. This is a definite plus, because whether you bought your jersey in the 70's or now, you will fit in with the army on the hill.
Some of the designs other clubs wheel out each year are terrible. Clubs have lost their identity in this respect.

What concerns me more, is the 8 syllable name for our side....

I did say sorry if it offends, I knew it would be a thread that would be challenged & you have the right to voice your opinions & I would fight along side you to defend those rights, but sooner or later the change will come. As for who do I support, I support St George Illawarra Dragons, not one or the other.

Apart from '82-'98 Illawarra has been part of Saints. A rich part of our history and roster.

Every time we've won a premiership Illawarra as single entity didn't exist. So that is 16.

Even The shire could lay claim to 13 of our premierships before they were torn from us.

They'll be back in time.

Trudge , I agree that in time the Sharks will become a third member of the St George Illawarra merger, I think it will happen latter than sooner but I feel as Rugby League grows in team numbers the Sydney clubs will be squeezed into more amalgamations. I also remember the part Illawarra played in our history before 82 - 98, my favorite player of all time was Graham Langlands an Illawarra junior & Immortal. All are excellent points..

Rossco, I like you and I agree with a lot of your points. But why do we need to change away from the mighty redV? It is our brand, and a damn good one at that. To do so would be like Apple Inc. changing its logo.

The change will never come mate. The RED V holds the equity within the club. It will never change.
It's that simple.

To suggest it will is misguided.

Thanks jOnesy, in any design the big red V would more than likely be retained to mark the St George heritage & what you say is correct it is a damn good brand. But as I said regardless of how we feel, it is inevitable that change will happen, we are no longer a stand alone club & I am sure that the Illawarra club would feel their heritage is as important as ours regardless of the difference in years. but for what its worth I have been wrong before & I think that any change will be sometime off.

The Red V is the focus. Always will be.
