Bennett has now taken Boyd McKinnon Cuthbo and retained Nigama who we tried to sign.
Would have liked Cuthbo to stay but not on $250k. Hope there is some good signing news for StG soon but don't know where it will come from.

how?

do you even know .0000001 percent of how player markets and rugby league clubs work?

Well maybe the good folks at the NRL don't know how they work either, else why do they need so long to make a call on this? If a decision was that easy, why didn't they just ring you?

De Bellin will do the hards yards and he'll get better with experience in first grade but really is not touted as a strike player or game breaker...Matthews and Ah Mau I can't comment on as I haven't seen much of them (which is what worries me in or recruiting this season). We were lacking an ingredient last year and Cuthbertson brought some of it to the table. Moltzen was a great buy given Boyd and Gaz's departure but now we look a little silly.

Tigers look silly. Anyways Cutbo was okay no big loss. He played about 3 good games for us.

Cuthbertson was a gret buy for the club at $50k & played his best footy since his Manly days. He will be missed if we have a bad injury run but, in all honesty I would rather keep the money in the bank as next year we will have to negotiate contracts with some of our top line players, like Soward & co. De Belin is an outstanding prospect & in time he will fill Cuthbertsons shoes & more. I wish Cuthbo all the best with his new club..

Keep the money in the bank for next year?

We're talking about what's left in the salary cap, not the bank balance.

they dont have to ring me, they just have to go by the convention adopted by all clubs.

You give someone a verbal release, you dont f**k them or the convention up by reneging.

League negotiations will never be the same after this and players will be the victims.

Instead of being able to get on with their lives, safe in the knowledge where they will be next year, They will have to wait for the laywers to first crawl all over the documents at a snails pace (@ $500 an hour) putting things in writing, getting triplicate copies and generally getting in the way of a man's right to earn a decent living without getting a hot poker up the cornhole.

anyone googled Stephen Humphery's dad? Seems like lying and feathernesting is a family trait.

Cuthbo showed against the Broncos that he can rise to the big occasion. He also is one of the best offloaders in the game. I think if he stayed he would have played a much bigger role with the club next season. I’m sure that none of the players we’ve signed has his skill set.

Not happy he has left, but were we ever a chance without paying overs? I think his become a Bennett disciple.

I know we won’t have as many players on rep duty next season but I'm still of the opinion that we have not replaced any of the class that has left. Our recruitment seems more like gambles than guarantees.

In addition we definitely have left ourselves exposed in the backs especially when you consider the amount of backs coming off surgery.

Gee some people are thick. We are lacking depth up front and back. Sorry to tell you but Vidot, Miller, Vea and company are not known for their consistent form.

I have a new flash. 230+k a season just made itself available when Moltzen reneged on his deal.
Just back on this, redvwhite.....how many of these inconsistent guys have we signed for $250k a season?

Or the pay cheque. $250k is too much for AC. Maybe we could have got away with paying him that for 1 season, with the Moltzen money....but he more than likely wanted the 3 year deal. $750k for Cuthbertson....no thanks.

I never said he was worth that much. Do you even know how much Newcastles is paying him?

Loses: include Boyd, Gasnier, Green, Cuthbertson
Gains: Vidot and a host of other players with question marks on their ability

It's all about Wayne Bennett in a nutshell. 3 years of great recruitment and now back to the old days of the massive turnover.

That's the thing.....it wasn't such great recruitment when it happened. Many questioned some of the guys Bennett signed at the time. You can't tell me Emmett, Tagive, Gower, Penese, Greenfield and that guy we just lost to Roosters who we got from Cronulla via Wests Devils were great signings. Granted Boyd and resigning of Gaz. Weyman, Costigan and Fien were struggling to get any interest anywhere. They turned out to be good signings because of the system we had in place. Whose to say some of these new guys don't turn out to be great signings....and we still have money left for that one big name signing, if he becomes available and fills our needs.

They get cuthbo, we get stuck with prior.

Honestly. That is just hopeless.
If cant see how big of a loss he is then you have no idea about rugby league.

Bennett probably held him back and didn't play him in some games so this when he poached him to Newcastle it wouldn't be so bad!
It's quite a team he is building up there in newcastle.

and you have no idea about funding a team within salary cap.

You think $750 for 3 seasons is a good deal for someone who would play more NSW Cup than 1st grade....and you think I know nothing about rugby league. I only played the game for between 28 years, and been involved in kids coaching since I stopped playing.

Don't believe the figures mate.

Point is we have carried players for far too long in the past. Prior has done sweet FA for years and is eating up our cap. Players like young will retire soon...I mean I'm curious where our attacking, versatile and dynamic ball runners are going to come from!!!!

Totally agree. The old days of putting too much faith in our "promising juniors".

Ridiculous.

Balance it out with some established quality 1st graders!

And you think that would have been Adam Cuthbertson? The guy had 2 or 3 good games this year.

Then again, if my opinion doesn't agree with yours, I know nothing about rugby league.

If you actually read what I wrote you would have noticed that I said keeping him meant paying overs. I do note that 250k for 3 years is a gamble I personally wouldn't take without Bennett at the helm.

I do believe that Cuthbo embraced Bennett more than the club and I may be speculating here but I'd bet the knights deal was a done deal ages ago. It was a matter of not rocking the boat and some salary cap manipulation. Bennett can't let go of his pet projects.
