Most agree on the following points at least I think we do . We will need a halfback between now and say the next two years .So may I ask the following questions for your opinions?

1 What type of halfback i.e Whats the job description a clever organiser i.e Peter Sterling a runner i.e Steve Mortimer .Someone who runs to the line etc.
2 Who is available to fit our needs?
3 Is there a junior in our ranks who might be the one?
4 In the current climate whats the price range in a $5mil salary cap that you'd pay for a good half. ( very important question imo)
5 A half with a troubled past ? Acceptable or not?

I think good halfbacks are the hottest commodities in the NRL, you just have to look at the 800K price tag that the Titans were offering Cooper Cronk. In comparison a good young halfback like Cherry Evans with his newly upgraded contract at around 500K a season seems to be a bargain especially weighed against the 500K a player like Chris Sandow is also on.

Now onto the bad boys I always knew that Todd Carney would offer plenty as a footballer he is genuinely world class, is he a ticking time bomb only time will tell. Robert Lui he is a good halfback and a very dangerous ball runner, but no way would I want to see him in the Red V, no chance of rehabilitation.

A very legitimate question Father. Personally, I would be grooming Soward for the Half Back role and Stanley for 5/8.
Stanley has a great passing game that gets wasted in the centres. He is a ball player not a ball runner, hence the failed fullback experiment and the failure to really have an impact in attack at centre. The try he scored off Hornby he was well in field so maybe he will succeed in taking the line on. He certainly doesn't appear afraid to get tackled or run into holes.
As for Soward, well he has an invaluable kicking game and he doesn't hold back when telling the others what to do and where to go. He looks like a leader...All he would need to do is direct the forwards around the middle of the park, kick the ball and feed Stanley either side of the ruck.
Whatever he does though, he needs to do it at pace. That is the one thing really lacking in our attacking game right now. No one really looks to be doing anything at pace. You watch the Broncs and Melb and they move the ball around and get through their plays at pace. We look like we are making it up on the spot.

Well said. I agree with all of that. I would add that Soward could bust the line at halfback when taking on tired opposition forwards.

1. A Jamie Soward; - Organiser, kicker, clever, very quick. Just needs to take the line on more often.
2. Soward, King, Stanley.
3. Less than 500 to start.
4. Soward's only trouble is confidence. Always been his problem. Get someone like Sterlo, Johns, Stewart, Daley ... to be his personal coach and mentor.

1. A field marshall, such as Stirling.
2. No idea, they're scarce, but perhaps Scott Prince for a couple of years.
3. I've seen a little bit of King as a junior and I think he could fill that role.
4. I'd like to keep Soward, Rein, Stanley, Morris & Nightingale so id say about 400-450k.
5. Prefer not, not worth the potential loss of sponsors, depends how troubled.

Inspirational, mix of direction & personal attack, good defence
Soward,Stanley if we can't get anyone, perhaps Foran if Manly spend too much on DCE and keeping Stewart.
?
$600 - $650
Prefer not, but depends on the type of trouble.
