"Jungle ball" "Calypso footy" etc etc

Why do the aussie commentators use this type of language to describe the Warriors play?

I mean, we know there's a large sub culture of anti social racial profiling that goes on in aussie but is it cool for commentators to talk that?

Let the justifying snide and vindicating replies roll in....

Hadn't noticed it tbh. Not a good idea.

Agreed, I was very surprised to hear them say "jungle ball". It's pretty close to the call from the weekend when a South African player mentioned "coconut tackles" from polynesian players.

For the same reason some clubs are described as being mathematical or precise and even monotonous. To be honest I can't see where or how Jungle footy becomes an insult to players?

Not justifying it all if there is a reason to be offended but I know I can certainly claim ignorance regarding any comment around jungle. I merely thought it referred to a less structured and more off the cuff type of game style.

Have you ever heard the term 'jungle ball' used to describe any other side other than the warriors?

It sounds particularly bad when it makes no sense. The Warriors used a basic, forward-oriented style tonight.

Seems like one of those scenarios where it's ok if we call it that, (the players) but unacceptable if everyone else calls it. Instant racism, just add individual perception?

Does " hot potato " football offend the Irish and vegetarians?

Never heard "jungle ball" before but I can't believe it was used. Who said it?

Why not just say "park footy" or something?

What does the term actually mean though?

Well that's the issue isn't it. Nobody actually knows what the f**k Jungle Ball is which leaves it open to interpretation.

One could argue it means unstructured, devil may care football that lacks structure. Basically football stripped down to the bare minimum as if the players were raised to survive in the jungle.

Other could argue that it create images of savages/primates who simply don't have the brainpower to adhere to a civilised/structured style of football.

Both arguments have their merits considering, as you put it, we have no clue what the f**k Jungle Ball is.

With Noddy being a recent ex player perhaps it's a term that the players themselves have used to describe the Warriors style?

Noddy said it before the game and then during the game as well so it wasn't a single slip, and considering he wrote it in the link AG posted above it's safe to say it's something he uses often.

While I don't believe he means it in an offensive way, it's probably not the smartest term to use.

my ears picked up too cause i thought the warriors were playing a very structured attack apart from one or two passages.

freestyle or off the cuff more appropriate.
