"Jungle ball" "Calypso footy" etc etc

David Morrow called Matt Cecchin a showpony yesterday.

A week after saying he loved having a spotlight on him.

Where do you draw the line?

Morrow has the same gripe with all the refs though. He's been complaining about it for years, long before Checcin came out of the closet.

If you saw the Tigers being described playing Jungle Ball it might be a different matter. But it's only the Warriors even when they're playing a particularly style of football.

Jungle ball is abit inappropriate, I don't have a problem with Calypso footy though, to me that just means they play a carefree, off the cuff brand of footy

Why do the aussie commentators use this type of language to describe the Warriors play?

I mean, we know there's a large sub culture of anti social racial profiling that goes on in aussie but is it cool for commentators to talk that?

Let the justifying snide and vindicating replies roll in....

Because football commentators are cliche merchants and apart from Fittler none of them has any originality.

So we can put it down to ignorance then, much like the "big Warrior forwards" line that always gets a run.

Commentators still talk about the Warriors as if it's 2002/2003 and that stereotype continue to hangs around. Jungle Ball would just be an extension of that.

It is pretty damn ignorant, but I don't think there is anything bad intended by it. The warriors havnt had the biggest pack in the comp for the last 5 years, yet their "big forwards" seem to get tired more easily than the other teams. Never really heard them talk about Canberra that way even though they had the biggest pack for years. Just ignorance I think.

There is a long history of non white people being described as apes/monkeys. Apes/monkeys = jungle.

Once again, I'll plead ignorance as I would have thought Jungle would only have offended those from places with a jungle and then only if they don't like being from a jungle.

I'll defer though as it is clearly easy to be taken in that context.

There were similar sorts of characterizations made about black soccer players in England in the 70s-80s. It was always said they lacked "bottle" and crumbled under pressure. "Sure those darkies are skillful, but when the going gets tough you want to make sure you have a few whites around to keep the steel in your side."

True to an extent but jungle does not equal Apes/Monkeys. Having said that, I would say that beach footy or maybe Globetrotters footy would be a better description of free style footy.

What does "bottle" mean?
