Been in the RAAF 15 years and I'm into metal as well.......................:D:D

PM me if you have any questions. I won't be able to answer everything as I'm not a 'pusser' but I can help none the less I guess.

Pretty much what Fire said. If you have half an idea you will breeze through the interview. The Navy is absolutely screaming for numbers so you have a good chance.

In the group activities if you are the extroverted type try and hold back a bit if you are the introverted type try to step up a bit. No one likes the highly opinionated guy. So just be somewhere in the middle of it all, offer your opinions, if you see an opportunity to take charge or a bit of leadership do so, but they won't be looking too much into that due to it not being an officer position.

Above all, know the job you are applying for in and out, know who the Minister of defence, the Chief of the Defence force and Chief of Navy are, touch up on a bit of Navy history, what ships are out there and the role of those particular ships. Know what the main weapon of the ADF is and know where the theatres are that we are operating in, it's not just the Middle East.

In saying all that, I never did group activities when I went through almost 8 years ago now. But I can't imagine the interviews have changed.

It's a great career. Here are just some of the benefits you can recieve.
- HPAS: ~$16000 first home buyers grant for all ADF members (you also still get the normal government grant of $7k, so about $23k all up)

DHOAS: Once you have served for 4 years the ADF will pay for some of your home loan repayments, 4 years service fetches you about $200 a fortnight.

Rent Allowance: If you are renting the ADF will pay just under half of your rent so in Ipswich QLD i recieve about $280 a fortnight for RA

Free medical and free dental

Don't pay medicare

Get to see the world

Get paid to keep fit

You also can get time off and cash incentives to study a degree.

I could keep going but you get the idea.

The Navy get paid the most out of the whole ADF due to seagoing allowance, expect to be away a lot living in close quarters. I did a little bit of time on Parramatta and asked myself how could anyone join the Navy. Each to their own I guess. I will say the Air Force generally treat their guys a lot better.

Hope this helps

That being said, the old man was in the army and got very sweet deals on home loans which he leased back to the ADF for excellent rental income. Unsure if it's still available, but was a very good deal at the time (late 90's).

He does have a stuffed back and bad hearing though. Could have been much worse. Some other men from the area who served in Vietnam have kids with moderate to severe dependency needs, perhaps because they were exposed to agent orange.

Did you live on base or off base?

Off base.

When my parents split up dad lived on base at Holsworthy then Townsville.

Since he moved to Adelaide he lived off base though (except for a couple of years when he was based in wagga and Darwin teaching courses)

He retired this year after 35 years in the army.

Just received the paperwork I need to bring in.

That's a lot of questions I need to fill in.

Bugger.

Went to my YOU session yesterday. Eligible for most of the ADF jobs.

Now trying to get fit for the role.

Hopefully they give me time to spruce up my fitness level.

When I finish my degree I am going to try and get a job with the army as a rehabilitation specialist. I reckon I could get them to fund the research I want to do too.

Good stuff. Start doing some research now (if you have the time) on possible avenues that may allow you to do this.

I am going to see if it is possible to do my industry experience with them, maybe by administrating fitness tests or some PT sessions or something.

That's good you've given it some thought. Sounds like it will work.

The Army has shit tins of Physical Training Instructors as well as a shit tin of fitness leaders. Only the best make it to PTI school and you generally have to be a fitness leader for a period of time to be selected to go to PTI school.

Not too sure what you are looking for, the Army is actually overhauling their fitness testing and moving away from the 2.4km run, pushups and situps and moving to functional style testing depending on what job you do. There has already been a shit load of funding and research that has gone into this as well.. The Army is actually very scientific when it comes to fitness and training as well as rehabilitation, and the PTI's are highly skilled at making sure everyone maintains the highest levels of fitness without breaking the troops.
