Dragons switch back to Bennett regime to save season

St George Illawarra have reverted to a key plank of the Wayne Bennett regime to revive their attack this season.Almost halfway into the 26-week regular competition, Dragons coach Steve Price has done an about-face on one of his big decisions during the off-season: to switch the on-field positions of playmakers Jamie Soward and Ben Hornby.
Th e backflip was evident in the Dragons' "ugly" 14-12 victory over Parramatta on Saturday night, with Price returning to Bennett's premiership-winning formula and posting his first win in four matches

Under former coach Bennett, Hornby's control of the left edge anchored the Dragons attack between 2009 and 2011, establishing a potent try-scoring combination through the likes of Ben Creagh, Matt Cooper and Brett Morris.

Soward, meanwhile, caused damage to opposition teams on the right side of the field largely through brilliant creativity and finesse with the boot.In defence, Bennett's formula meant Soward could count on the strength of Beau Scott inside him on the right side.

It was virtually an unstoppable force devised by the seven-time premiership winner. But until last weekend's loss to the Rabbitohs, that trademark structure had been altered by Price, with Soward and Hornby swapping sides in defence (Soward staying left, Hornby right) and becoming more integrated in attack.

Soward said the decision to revert back was simply about building momentum."We've just got to keep building. It's a crucial time of the year, it's through Origin, and we've just got to try and get as many wins as we can," he told the Mercury.

"Ben's been playing good and he's been getting me the ball when I need it ... He switched back to the left last week, which was good, and defensively he gets a bit of a break."

In theory, changes to Bennett's offensive blueprint were supposed to remove an element of predictability in the Dragons attack after teams became accustomed to the way St George Illawarra moved the ball.
At the beginning of the season, Hornby said of the changes: "We want to play more together, me and Sowie, as opposed to playing left and right.
"We want to play to each other and switch sides, but I'll be predominantly on the right. We think that might be more effective for us. Time will tell."It's not the first time Price has made changes to his attack during the season, appointing Brett Morris to Kyle Stanley's pre-season fullback post after two games and swapping utility Beau Scott between centre and the second row.

Another change evident in Saturday's Kogarah stoush was swapping wingers Daniel Vidot (now right) and Jason Nightingale (now left). With the Dragons sitting in 10th (6-6) after Saturday's Parramatta match, Soward said a loss against the league's bottom-placed side would have dealt a massive blow to their season.

The Dragons showed desperation in the dying stages of the game, trailing 12-10 before centre Kyle Stanley crossed in the 77th minute."It was a disappointing first half. We've set ourselves standards here over the last three-and-a-half, four years, and to dish that up in the first half was disappointing," Soward said.

"I never really felt we were out of the game. Even at 12-4, we knew that our defence would hold up - we just needed to get some completions.
"It took a special play from Jason and Brett to get us that try and get us back in the game. I felt that we had something coming in the end but we just had to make it happen."We got out of jail."

not a co-incedence that soward had a blinder either... especially in defence, i have never seen him so committed, racing up so quickly and cutting off attacking raids. and his running game started to come back as well.

alas for Hornby it didnt help... his days surely must be numbered... gave a few classic hospital passes to his outside men... no vision

Pity Price has taken 12 weeks to realise wht most of us have realised about 10 weeks ago...

Soward has been playing great all season, mostly in defence, just a victim of the teams overall poor play... I would love to see him play half back fulltime but iv heard that the club doesnt see him as a 7.

that concerns me greatly because he is almost the perfect 7, especially when you see him out there guiding the team around like he does.

Plus he is a confidence player so if he can get out there be vocal and make decisions and they pay off for him like they have been he's in for a pretty special second half to the season.

+1
logical choice for halfback, he plays like a half anyway..
going back about 2 or three seasons he wasnt mature enough or consistent enough to be a halfback, but now i think he is ready and as you mentioned his game wouldnt change that much at all.
soward to half, stanley to 6

Spot on Red... Maturity is the key.

Some of Sowards best passages of play is when he is off the ball getting the play right where he wants it so he can get a good kick away at the end of a set.

I'll hand it to Pricey, he's not a stubborn prick and isn't afraid to say he f**ked up. He did it first with the move of Brett to FB, now a second time switching Hornby and Soward around. It's good to know he won't dig his heels in.

Agree with Soward as a HB, he barks all the orders out there anyway.

my concern is how many times are we supposed to suffer the Price screw ups before we say enough is enough... 1 year, 2 years???
the Brown saga dragged on for about three years too many - we all knew he was out of his depth years before Doust did something about it.
i agree its good to see him admit the shambles he has created but it has taken far too long to get to this stage..
is only round 12 and he has screwed up too many times fo rmy liking already to be considered the right coach to take the team to the next title shot..

He is rookie coach, he is trying new things. At least he's not afraid to.

He is just trying to find a formula that works.

Every coach did that at some stage during their careers.

Just giv him time but like I said if we are in the same position this time next year then they need to start thinking about new coach.

I think 2 years is plenty of time to show what he's got.

3 years with Bennett you would think he knows what formula works for the players he has..
all it needed was a bit of tweaking and some strategic recruitment.. not a total tactical overhaul.. :(

YES ,Soward to 7 Kyle to 6,has flair written all over it.I am convinced we have a great haves combo with these guys. Kyle in the centres is like having a Marshall or a Lockyer playing in the centres,WASTED.

Well said. I agree Soward was the difference against Parra.

Shame the likes of Kleenex watch games with their eyes closed. Have no idea how he can have a crack ay Soward at the moment. And soward wasnt helped by some pretty poor go forward up front.

I don't mind Price trying things this season,we have players that can adapt to change (forwards in the centres excepted),we have been inconsistent so to make some changes to make us lift our performances why not.

True.

I'm guessing he didn't try to change much in the defence area, but the changes in the attack are affecting the confidence of the players.

When that happens other areas of your game suffers as well.

I reckon trying things will help us at the business end of season ..if we are then forced to move players around again they will be able to adapt.

Mr R and J. I'm going to give Price his two years. I know what you mean by we might have to suffer, but he needs two years to sort things out. I'm happy with him persisting with Kyle and Vidot on the right hand side, those boys just have to get confidence.
