HOW THE RABBITOHS
GOT THEIR

NAME
Souths' famous nickname 'The Rabbitohs" (sometimes spelt Rabbitoes and sometimes Rabbitos) dates back to before Rugby League began in Sydney.
George Ball used to tell the story that some members of the old South Sydney Rugby Union Club used to sell rabbits - hawking them through the streets with the cry " Rabbito!"
It was said that they wore the same jerseys when they were selling the rabbits as they did when they were playing for Souths. Gradually the name caught on. A snippet in an early League programme adds further to the story.
Jack "Sugar" Flanagan recalled an incident when wags in the crowd let loose half a dozen rabbits onto the field at Moore Park before Souths were to play a tough opponent. From then on, the rabbit was regarded as an unofficial mascot for Souths. Strangely the nickname, which is now synonymous with South Sydney football seemed to take a long time to gain general acceptance.
In programme and newspaper reports until comparatively recent times, Souths were not referred to as the "Rabbitohs" even though Wests were the Magpies, Easts The Tri- colours, etc., in newspaper reports from the very earliest times.
In all became official in 1959 when Souths adopted a new jersey design - with a rabbit emblem on the breast.
