Shane Flanagan's pre-season speech built a Shark Park fortress

IT'S the secret meeting Sharks players and coach Shane Flanagan are still reluctant to talk about, but it is behind the club's revival.

Flanagan called his players together during the pre-season to deliver an impassioned speech about making Toyota Stadium a graveyard and delivering for their fans following three poor seasons.

After seven games this year, the Sharks have their best home record in 13 years with six wins from seven games.

Only competition leaders the Melbourne Storm can match that success rate.

Going into tomorrow night's game against the Roosters, the Sharks have an 85.7 per cent winning record at home - their best since 1999, when they won 12 from 13 (92.3 per cent).

"We talked about honouring Shark Park, having pride in the jersey and making sure other teams don't want to come here," Sharks centre Ben Pomeroy said.

"(Flanagan) was pretty passionate about it, he was really trying to drive it into us."

Whatever was said has had a remarkable effect as the club is vying for a top-four spot. And with star five-eighth Todd Carney taking on his former Roosters teammates tomorrow night, the Sharks are poised to build on that success.

"I don't want to go into (the speech) too much, that's the sort of stuff that goes on behind closed doors," Flanagan said.

"From my playing experience and coaching experience with other clubs, it has always been a tough place to come and play and we wanted to get that back."

It's a major improvement as the Sharks won less than 40 per cent of their home games in each of the previous three seasons.

Flanagan said it was imperative the Sharks continue their strong home form as they charge towards the finals.

"It's a rolling effect," Flanagan said. "You win footy games, then you get more fans .

"If we create that dominance at home, we'll get more support and that obviously helps us in tight situations.

"(But) it's not just going to be for half a year, it's going to have to be for a whole year and then into next year.

"But (the players) are doing a good job."

The Sharks' only loss at Toyota Stadium this year came in Round 2 against Wayne Bennett's Knights.

Pomeroy said the Sharks are brimming with confidence as they chase a first finals appearance since 2008.

"We want a top-four position, that's what we want." Pomeroy said.

Wish we didn't feed journos this type of stuff prior to a home game

In all honesty, is there a coach that would not have given a similar per-season speech?

Let's just keep winning and not feed the journos, the same mob that are quick to death ride us.

Absolutely loving seeing the wins at home. I was only 6 in 99 but can still remember the fear that other supporters had when they spoke of their teams playing at Shark Park. That was the year I truly became a Shark supporter and I have loved them ever since.

God love Flanno for what he has done for this club. This years signings have been fantastic and he has brought back that winning culture. With the leagues club development looking like it is going to go ahead, it looks like there are finally some good times ahead for the sharkies

It never stopped them bevore when it came to lies, notwithstanding off field incidents.

Our winning is dong the talking and gate receipts substantiate that

A loss on monday night could lead to a perception of cracking, as we have proven we can win without Gal and TC.

When we continue into the finals this type of stuff will snowball and wouldn't certain journos love to raise some past demons.

Give me f**k all and just keep winning as bigger statements are sometimes not spoken.

When has the Sharks ever had a winning culture to bring back?

I don't think we have a winning culture, not at all. I guess as far as he is concerned though we gave had some better times from 99 onwards compared to before that. See 2001,2,8 etc

I don'e see us as having a winning culture from shithouse to penthouse, but a number of players and maybe some of the management staff seem to. All we can hope for is that it is contagious and slowly spreads through the entire club.

I hope it spreads to us poor buggers.

I was there in 99. I remember meeting Peachey when they did a promo at sutho hospital and said he should have been the origin fullback. He was absolutely filthy and said what more could he do? We got little from the media, everyone thought all we did was have Healey kick bombs to score. Mundine backflipping, that was 99.

We get some positive press and some of you fellas think it'll jinx us. That it's some bad voodoo. Voodoo fuggen smoodoo. We need all the positive press we can get.

A mate of mine, a dragon through and through, his sons mad dragons (one or all of them will play first grade footy), his youngest son just told my sons he goes for the sharks. It's winning and positive publicity.

There is no hoodoo, there is no hex, we win because we are better this year.

I'm going to wish really, really hard that you lose against us.

Take this seriously you idiots.

I wished for a Dragons premiership every year from 1982, and what happened one day? Yep. A Dragons Premiership.

The Force is strong with this one and your nightmare in Wollongong (no jokes about Wollongong being a shit hole if you don't mind) will continue, because I'm reallllllllllllllllllllly going to clinch my fists, eyes, mouth, toes and butt cheeks and wish reallllllllllllly hard for it.

Yee Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
