I haven't read every post in this thread, so I apologise if this has been stated, but in the 5 pages or so I did read it wasn't.
The Jungle Ball reference might have come from the USA street basketball games, but ultimately it starts with a very old saying about "The Law of the Jungle", which is completly race neutral and has been used to describe every environment in the modern world that is tough and reliant on strength or wits to survive - even Wall Street and thats full of pin-striped white boys. The Law of the Jungle is why its Jungle Ball - it refers to a lack of organisation or structure, toughness and more elemental tactics - kill or be killed etc. Its more about Animals, not Humans..
So originally, race neutral and not even human based, but it does seem to have been hijacked in Rugby League commentary and the previous post (by Bunniesman I think)about how Jungle = monkeys and Apes = black people in some views is just an unfortunate interference by modern society and the way racism has developed by certain bigoted and small minded redneck fools.
Whether the original term was intended to be racist is not even the point anymore. When that other, offensive interpretation is so open, it needs to be avoided as a term used to describe a style of football.
I would have thought Calypso Ball was a compliment if it refers to flambouyant and exciting style of rugby assiciated with a cultural sterotype, but maybe any generalisation or comparison that has such an association to race or culture is too risky these days.
