St George Illawarra consider playing Dean Young against the Melbourne Storm

ST GEORGE Illawarra is sensationally considering allowing Dean Young to play against Melbourne this Friday - just six days after the veteran forward was knocked senseless and stretchered from the field in a neck brace.

In a decision most fans will find difficult to comprehend, the Dragons yesterday revealed that Young was considering returning to tackle the Storm providing he gets appropriate medical clearance.

This is the same player who was so heavily concussed from the Greg Inglis hit last Saturday that he told a Dragons trainer "tell Brownie to put me back on"- in reference to his old coach Nathan Brown, who left the club in 2008.

The Daily Telegraph asked to speak with Young but was told he did not want to make comment and wanted to "get on with this week's match if selected".

The club's performance director Andrew Gray also declined to comment but said in a statement on the club's website: "Dean will follow our standard post-concussion medical process and will be under review before making a decision on him later in the week.

"The process combines a trial of how he adapts to an increasing intensity of training, a cognitive scan as well an overall medical assessment."

NRL spokesman John Brady said St George Illawarra were within their rights to let Young play if he passed the necessary medical tests.

"They have to undergo critical testing by the doctor before they can play," Brady said.

"There is not a mandatory stand-down.

"The doctor has to put through a series of cog-state tests during the week and the player can't return until he has been able to complete all those tests successfully.

"He could (play) if he passed everything this week but the doctor would have to clinically diagnose that he was fine to do it.

"It can't just be, oh, we think you are OK."

The sport of boxing has a compulsory 28-day rest period for any fighter who suffers concussion but - despite all the talk in recent times that player safety is paramount - the NRL still allows players to back up without a mandatory rest period.

I don't think he'll play, not on a 6 day turn around.
I think the tele will go to town with this if they play him considering they thought GI nearly killed him on Saturday night.

Horrible that they could even consider playing him.

NOt sure if anyone saw the 4 corners programme "Hard Knocks" a few weeks back.

There is a big story about ex sports stars and concussion... a big story about Shaun Valentine and how he is these days.

worth a watch. Scared the crap out of me
Valentine and ex-All Black half Shaun Devine have virtually no short term memory fro being concussed. How's Nathan Long and Martin Lang going these days they were both concussed many times.

Obviously I'm happy he's recovered but gee what an overreaction for a tackle that hasn't injured anyone seriously enough to even miss one game.

Can someone explain (using actual facts) how the GI tackle is worse than all the shoulder charges that got between 1 and 3 weeks?

And that pretty much sums up Dean Young's thought patterns at present..
If he's that crook why has he been named then?

Craig Young says Dragons' medical staff will decide if son Dean plays against Storm

CRAIG Young is leaving it up to club medical staff to decide whether his son Dean will play against the Melbourne Storm tonight in a crucial game that could determine St George-Illawarra's play-off prospects.

Young Jr hasn't trained with the team this week after taking a heavy knock from Greg Inglis in the Dragons' 36-14 loss to South Sydney last weekend.
Young was on the receiving end of a mistimed Inglis shoulder charge which earnt the Souths' star a three-week suspension.
Dragons spokesman Matthew Skinner said Young would undergo a series of tests before a final decision was made.
"I've got total confidence in the staff's ability," said Young Sr, who played 234 first-grade games with the Dragons. "They are the best in the business and only they and my son Dean know if he's right to play or not.
"There will be no compromise. The player's welfare always comes first, be it my son or not."
The Dragons, who have slumped to 13th on the table, have already lost veteran centre Matt Cooper for three weeks with a hamstring strain sustained in the loss to the Rabbitohs.
Dragons coach Steve Price has promoted the Newcastle Knights-bound Beau Scott to the centres alongside former Melbourne player Chase Stanley for tonight's clash.
The Storm welcomes back Billy Slater for his first game since breaking down with a knee injury while playing for Queensland in State of Origin 11 on June 13.
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy will be looking to the inspirational Slater to help snap a mid-season slump of four losses.
It is the longest losing streak on Bellamy's watch since he took over the coaching reins at the start of the 2003 season.
Bellamy put his men through a tough workout at the University of Wollongong yesterday.
Tonight's match will also see former Dragon Jason Ryles play his first game against his previous club since joining the Storm last November. The 15-Test veteran front-rower played his junior football with the Berkeley and Wests Illawarra clubs before making his first-grade debut for the Dragons against Parramatta 12 years ago.

NewcastleRabbi, again your concern for a dragons player is touching..

With the GI case finalized, and the rest of the bunnies supporters are focussing on beating the tigers, the fact you are concerned for Dean's welfare and our hopes for beating the storm is truly truly touching..

Thank you kind sir..

Are you sure you're not a closet dragons fan?
