"A call like that will cost someone a Grand Final on day"

This has been thrown around a lot lately, and it's been amplified by the events of last nught's games. However I can't be the only one who thinks to themselves "Dud refs have already cost a side a Grand Final" can I? It seems like everyone forgets about Archer's dud call with 5 minutes to go back in '09.

We remember that disgrace very very well.

Actually watched it a few weeks ago... but that said, the overall standard of refereeing has become worse and worse...

The refs cost us in 2009 and they also dudded the Roosters in 2010... and they will pull off their standard dud call next week and maybe they can sneak one into the Grand Final as well.. just to keep their average up.

The NRL sells drama, and rugby league fans are all too happy to consume.

Tell me dud refereeing decisions don't add to the drama? For a game nobody really cared about, it is getting a lot of airplay. That makes the dud call a success in big picture terms.

Agreed. If you clock someone in the jaw and knock them out so they drop the ball (the only thing that stopped the try being scored) - well, penalty try 99 times out of 99.

Also agree.
I've never met anyone who DIDN'T think it wasn't a penalty try.

I was sat in front of it at the game. In my eyes Ainscough (?) was just contesting the ball. Penalty maybe (reckless contact), penalty try... never for mine. But each to their own.

I'm more inclined to go with the penalty try. Ainscough knew he was too far infield to contest the catch so he had to try and knock the ball away or knock Smith out. Which he did and was duly penalised. But the stupid dick should have just let him catch it and score and make Geyer conver from the sideline.

Isn't 20/20 hindsight wonderful!

i don't give a shit if it was or wasn't .... but i give a shit that melbourne got gifted a premiership from it ..... penalty tries should be awarded at the spot the try was "supposedly" definitely going to be scored at

'99 was a classic example of a penalty try. If the result went the other way and the Dragons won despite that then it would have been a real disgrace. The decision against us in '09 was a dud call, but I don't believe it cost us the game. We lost it ourselves by not starting the match well and then not taking our opportunities when they came, like Todd Lowrie getting the ball in the last in great attacking position towards the match. There are dud calls like in '09 in every match but you just have to live with them. Last night's was more than a dud call, it's unjustifiable how a video ref can look at that last Manly 'try' so many times yet somehow award it..

wow .... i only just saw a replay of that foran knock on try (I fell asleep last night) .... what a shocker!!

i can accept onfield referees making mistakes with split second decisions ... but how can a video ref let that through??

Bill Harrigan's unfathomable call for "unsportsmanlike behaviour" certainly cost Balmain the 1989 Grand Final.

Worst call I've seen in a GF.
