If you think it was worth a penalty then it was foul play that stopped him from scoring. It doesn't matter if it was intentional or not.
If Ainscough wasn't there Smith scores.
Ben Roarty who played in that game (and has also played against you too Springs!) told me as soon as it happened he thought it was a definite penalty try. Bill Harrigan, the ref on the day, also told me that he had no problems in awarding the penalty try. No problems at all..
Craig Smith had a great series for the Storm during the premiership win. He missed the thrashing in game 1 at the hands of St George, kicked a pile of goals against Canterbury in the qualifying final. Intercepted a pass when Eels were on their way to score a try in the preliminary final that cost Parra the win, tackled Mundine early in the second half when he looked like going over from dummy half and then got awarded the penalty try.
From memory, he hadn't played first grade since Round 1 before Chris Anderson brought him back into the side after losing game 1 in the finals. His 'recall' was the turning point of the Storm's season.
BTW...Roarts had a huge wrap on Chris Anderson's coaching of the Storm that season. Was the right bloke at the right time.
