Agreed. The same would apply to most of Europe. On the other hand Americans just can't understand why anyone would want to sit on grass.

Never mind the Americans....I can't understand it. It's fine for park footy but not for a big event like NRL.

Look to the future not the past.

What if most people don't want the future option?

Afterall, the fans are the ones buying this stuff.

I will not bother wasting mine or my family's time and money by travelling in traffic to a big souless steel echo chamber.

I know mates who follow other teams and they same the exact same thing.

Fact is there are plenty of fans here who won't bother going to bigger more soulless stadiums and we're probably the more staunch supporters. Average Joe is not going to drag his wife and kids to a ground that takes an hour and a half to get to on a Friday/Monday night. The only people who seem to be in favour of this stupid idea are PR who lives on the other side of the country, DunniesGimp who lives in Coffs Harbour and has never been to an NRL match and Bobmar who seems to have an irrational phobia of grass and/or hills.

Does anyone think we will get a NFL situation where teams are moved because of the promise of a better stadium?

It says a lot that one side here is arguing for modern stadiums/facilities and the other side is getting emotional and using personal attacks and strawman arguments in rebuttal. Pick up your game guys...

Nothing wrong with modern stadiums, provided they are close enough for most supporters to travel to. The fact is the NRL have decided to make the majority of games at times that are not family friendly and then fans are expected to travel long distances, often on weeknights to games. All they will achieve is reduction of crowd numbers, not increases.

All this thread is proving is this...

- Fans of teams who have already moved to larger stadiums (by choice or forced) think that it is the way of the future and ALL teams should do it.

- Fans of teams who still operate out of their home ground in their home suburb think that thats the way it should stay.

There is hardly any real debate in here without bias getting in the way.

That aside for me it comes down to convenience, i wont be going to ANZ or SFS as much as i go to shark park as it is simply too much trouble for me to do it.

Foxtel wins.

Just to clarify, would you be happy with Cronulla only ever averaging approx 15k due to their stadium if it means they never play outside of the shire? I know the redevelopment is planned but I can’t see it boosting averages there. If you are not happy with this then what solution do you propose given you are so staunchly against relocating even a few games?

Do you actually think they will get more people going to watch them in the SFS or Homebush?

+1

Tradition is a big part of most sports. In saying that we shouldnt let it get in the way of progress, but we definately shouldn't ignore the past.

exactly .
my generation is the one with young kids.
If they turn us off the game we wont take our kids and they will grow up not really interested in it.

To be honest, for games involving other Sydney teams, yes I do. Whatever decrease there is in Sharkies supporters who wouldn't travel to the SFS or ANZ would more than likely be more than made up by the opposition fans going to the game who wouldn't have travelled down to the Shire. Is that an ideal situation for Cronulla? Probably not, but I don't think crowd numbers would necessarily fall due to a move. Realistically I think any "centralised stadium" policy would need to allow for a small number of games still to be played at the "local ground".

That said, instead of moving to ANZ or the SFS, maybe the Sharkies would consider taking their home games to Hunter Stadium in Newie. That ground might be looking for a new tennant very, very soon :sarcasm:

No point having a flashy stadium if you havent got a team to play there.

*said in jest, they will be fine, the nrl will sort it out they cant afford to lose a team

They probably could if it were a Sydney club, but they can't afford to lose Newie. But you are right, they will be fine. The $20m will see them well in front of the majority of other teams.
