I had a mate in college who dabbled in home brew. Somehow managed to make a beer that tasted like Vegemite. Not a popular brew, but I'd be lying if I said we poor Uni students didn't drink every last bottle.

Never had home brew, drank some hardcore Grappa made by a mates Grandma before though. Needless to say I don't remember much of that night.

Make Zambucca/Sambucca. It's a strong bloody drink. Make it with my grandmother. Required quite a few ingredients, mix em up, leave them for a bit and before you know it you have your own rocket fuel.

Leaves the manufactured brands for shit. Only problem is finding the ingredients is now near impossible.
