Jarryd Hayne re-signs through till the end of the 2015

At the end of the day, the relevant questions are: 1) is $800k (salary cap consumption) for Hayne as good a deal as *name alternative star* at 1 million (or you can change the numbers to 700 / 900....whatever) and 2) if we didn't re-sign Hayne, what is the quality of the player(s) we could actually attract with the resulting salary cap space.

I hope Hayne's price drops a little each for each unsigned week where he isn't as involved as a player wanting $1mil/year should be.... Maybe dock his new contract offer by $50,000 for the Round 2 and 3 performances, and see how he goes in Round 4 if he doesn't sign this week?

My opinion on Hayne has been the same for the last few years. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

There's only so much Hayne can do playing in a team like ours. As long as we have a side sitting toward the bottom of the table Hayne is going to be inconsistent. We only had to see the difference last year what a difference he brings to the side compared to how we play without him.

Fmd. A poor game or two, and the knives come out.

Surprised you merkins haven't necked yourselves over the years.

I don't WANT him to leave but I wouldn't "neck" myself if he did.

He has been our best player since 09 by a country mile.

The issue is that if he wants to be our highest paid player AND play fullback like a traditional fullback, then he isn't worth 8 or 900k and definitely not a million.

Imo he needs to play 6 if he wants what Thurston is getting. Hoppa coming and Sandow really stepping up, along with Norman, it won't hurt as much if we lose him.

In saying all of that, we are going re-sign him and he will be our highest paid player, so it is irrelevant what any of us think.

.

He is playing a traditional fullbacks role this year cause RS wants him to.

Our attack this year, has been off sandow, Roberts and Paulo. Once RS decides Roberts and Paulo are not ball players, I'm sure hayne will get his hands on the ball more.

Hayne is only playing to the game plan. He's been carrying this team for years... hell, he even nearly made Kearney look better than he was.

If he signs for 1mill, I'd be very surprised if more than 600k goes toward the cap. Don't forget the cap is increasing. Can't see what the fuss is about.

This. For hayne to become more consistant, the team needs to improve. Simple.

Stop making excuses for him.

If Hayne's energy, enthusiasm and leadership were exemplary each week then I wouldn't disagree with what you are saying. However, with the abundance of talent he has, only a fool would suggest that he is playing to the level he is capable of.

Hayne needs to take accountability for his own performances and shouldn't be pandered to or excused because we are a sh!t team. Talent aside, we should set standards around committment and leadership and every player, including Hayne should be made to meet these standards. Look at Thurston, easily the most talented player at the Cowboys over the years but always the most comitted on the field. This is the benchmark that Hayne should strive for.

I hope that Sticky doesn't make the mistake of previous coaches and continually reminds him of this.

Put billy slater in the eels side of the last three years and I am sure his energy level wouldn't be what it is at the storm.

For you guys who wouldn't care if we miss out on hayne; Which off contract player/s would you fill with the approx. 800k we'd have left over (assuming hoppa and norman are both on their way in 2014)?

Hoppa can fill Haynes spot. I'd look at a hooker and some forwards. Even if we can't get them now I'd wait. Hayne will no doubt want a 4 year deal. Thats way too long for us to have such money tied up in a position we are fine in.

I strongly disagree. There is a reason that commentators have spoken about Slater in far more glowing terms than Hayne. To come from a scrawny jockey to one of the games greatest players is remarkable and shows a level of committment and determination that Hayne has never shown. Hayne has always been talented and has done just enough to get by.

You comment exemplifies the sort of apologist attitude that needs to stop when it comes to Hayne.

Who exactly? It appears we are looking for a prop and a 2nd rower even with the signing of hayne. Which off contract ones would you go for?

As i stated in another thread the only hooker worth going for is Rein who might be worth 300-400k maybe
