Conflict of interests. Will the dogs get favorable treatment?
Not liking this at all.

They shouldn't get favourable treatment - the Sharks ran around without a CEO for a while and didn't get much help. I don't see why the Dogs should get help. They'd probably have a replacement lined up already (or if not, then the replacement should be easy to find).

We're you thinking he'll perform a dual role?

That's never going to happen.

Actually, yes.
Nothing so far suggests he has or will resign.

Did he blind side the dogs with this job oppotunity or they gave their blessing? Isn't he contracted to the dogs? Many questions need answering.

I think the bulldogs resignation is implied.

There is no way he will perform a dual role. Both are full time positions and are in conflict.

Excellent appointment of Greenberg.

But I'm particularly intrigued to dee the downgrading of Paul Kind's role to just commercial operations.

Smith is obviously looking for a reinvigoration of the marketing department, which is desperately needed.

The best managers surround themselves with the best people and aren't afraid to hire and train people whose skills may surpass their own.

Good move by Smith. Whether it be a succession plan or just a new structure. Good on him.

How about we wait until the press conference. No doubt most of these questions will be addressed.

What makes you think Smith will be gone by year end?

and how was appointing a highly succesful businessman a bad thing?

I dont believe having a successful businessman running your sport is a bad idea. The problem with Smith is that he had no background in our game.

The following is what he said on his announcement to the post of NRL CEOback in Novemeber last year.

But he baulked at any suggestion he does not like rugby league.

"I love rugby league - I am a fan of rugby league, I am a fan of rugby union and multiple sports," he said.

"I watch all sports and really enjoyed the grand final.

"For it to be reported I am not a fan is misleading."

"I spent six months on a plane this year - I manage businesses across 10 countries and haven't had much time to spend with my family, let alone watch live sport.

Smith appear to be a very successful businessman, who spends a lot of time running businesses around the world As he said in the above quote he doesn't have a lot of time to watch sport. So why should we expect him to know anything about our game. I believe that the persson running our game needs to have knowledge of our game.

Rugby league club bosses rapidly losing faith in David Smith as pressure rises on NRL CEO

  • When Dave Smith was announced as the new chief executive of the NRL, he was warmly welcomed by the game's 16 club bosses as the man to lead the code into a bold new future.
Now it appears they are rapidly losing faith and patience.

Several club chief executives on Monday labelled Smith aloof and said they were beginning to doubt that he was the right man to run the game, while former NRL boss David Moffett said he felt sorry for Smith but his reign at Rugby League Central would "end in tears".
The criticism came following a forgettable weekend for Smith in which he was savaged by Sydney radio king Ray Hadley for suggesting jumping castles and rock bands could help turn around sagging crowd figures.
Hadley lashed out after a record low crowd of 4635 turned up to watch City-Country - a marquee game regarded as a selection trial for the NSW State of Origin team - in Coffs Harbour, with high ticket prices blamed.
NRL officials were forced to defend the concept of the City-Country game amid reports that it was set to be abandoned because it had become increasingly irrelevant.
It is understood some club chief executives believe Smith is out of touch with key figures in the game.
Several have indicated their frustration with him for failing to return phone calls, emails and even text messages.
NRL chief executive Dave Smith has called a press conference for 1pm (EST) Tuesday. Stick with foxsports.com.au and Fox Sports News (Channel 513) for all the latest news and reaction.
"More and more it appears he's not (the right man for the job)," said one CEO, who would not be named for fear of reprisal.
"If you're not a footy person then I don't think you can run a club, let alone the game. He's not a footy person. He's far from a footy person."
It is also understood that tension is high at Rugby League Central, with constant speculation about impending changes. Some key staff members have indicated that they have barely spoken to the new boss since he started in February.
The 48-year-old former banker and soldier arrived at the NRL with impeccable credentials to capitalise on the game's billion-dollar television windfall, but there were also some concerns about his lack of a rugby league background.

I thought he was gone even before I read this article. And yes we can say its a a News Lyd article.

Anyone who sees this as a negative is a fool. Greenberg is a massive addition to leagues administration.

I bet you were advocating Michael Searle a few short years ago?

Greenburg's overrated. What's he done apart from lead his club to a wooden spoon and throw millions at a disgruntled coach?

Most people I spoke to who love the City-Country annual clash did not go this year for one main reason: it no longer is a trial for the NSW Blues squad. Plodders like James Tedesco and Curtis Sironen get a run, and people get put off (both these blokes have immense potential, but in Sironen's case, he has played six or seven First Grade games).

Average people I have chatted to about the match are getting increasingly fed up with idiotic selections (and even more idiotic omissions), and hence are not bothering with the game.

I cannot see how David Smith should be held accountable for that.

That just reads like he isn't "one of the boys" so News doesnt like him.

I see that as a ringing endorsement of his position, not a negative.

And for f**kS sake who in there right mind considers CvC to be a "marquee" game??

So you think Smith is smart enough to hire the perfect PR man . . . in that case he must know what he's doing.

Now he can get on with the real job as front man for the ARLC, which by the way is the only significant power in the game.

You don't need a background in the game if you surround yourself with the right people.

Having a background in the game is old school thinking IMO. The landscape of the sport has changed , hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake. I don't want someone with no financial knowledge in charge of that.
