If you were really Bill Harrigan you would be bagging the refs deluxe. He has been their worst critic since DA took over is refs boss.

Sorry for doubting you Bill.

Just out of interest was that photo taken when you were referee for the short lived return of gladiators? What the f**k were you thinking going on that show?

Interesting stats here on penalties for season 2013 so far. http://stats.rleague.com/rl/misc/penalties.html#2013

8th position for penalties received (89) - top teams Broncos, Cowboys, Titans

4th Position for penalties against (98) - Top offenders Tigers, Manly, Roosters

Now these stats could be pulled out of a cornflakes packet as far as i know. Cause the internetz is true :sarcasm: (the same stats has Parra with 5 wins).

However if its anywhere near close to reality, we aren't the worst off. Im sick of hearing the `hard done by sh*t'. Yes the referees are making bad calls, but they also make great calls in a lot of games. They hardly ever get plaudits for the good calls they make. They're on a hiding to nothing.

Take the penalty count on the chin and get on with footy ffs.

Yours truly
Billy Harrigan

those stats look spot on as from what i saw however didn't include the 13 - 6 count against us on Sunday. Either way we aren't the hardest done by. We just can't cope with penalties against us with our roster compared to other clubs

As well as starting every sentence with "I " and arranging a glamour shot of you on a Harley to accompany your post.

Those stats prove nothing, have you read the article and what Sticky said ?

Sticky's complaint is that the opposition get away with the same plays that we get penalised for.

I dont see how general stats on penalty counts can identify any proof or otherwise. The stats need to be more specific not general.

depends what they were received for and compare that to why we were penalised. Then watch every game and compare that to how many times the opposition offend and dont get penalised for said offences.

Then we may have some stats to see if Sticky has a beef or not.

when i was watching the bunnies game, it actually crossed my mind that they do alot to GET penalties when they have the ball .... everyone talks about the wrestle from the defensive point, but I reckon souths work hard when they are tackled to make it look like they are being held even when it's no different to what others do

i think part of our problem is we are lazy when we get tackled - don't put enough effort into scoring ourselves the same penalties

Agree, stats dont always show a true picture, and Ricky was justified in his comments. But who wants to analyze it that deeply? In the Souths game i thought Parra weren't allowed as much time as the rabbits when holding the player down in the tackle. But i thought Souths players earned some of that through fighting harder to get up and play it.

Looking at the bigger picture, Parra arent getting penalised any more or less than most teams in the comp. As mentioned in a previous post in this thread, stronger teams handle getting penalised better we do.

Im just sick of the focus being put on refereeing, when thats not the major problem. Im a fan of Ricky and his passion. But i dont think well see a major improvement in results until next season.

You're on to something there Strider.
I have thought the same all year. The ruck is soooo important, both when you have the ball and don't.
Also, if you don't have the home ground advantage...you WILL lose the penalty count! The refereeing this year is becoming hilarious.
DA huh....?

It's not Anderson's fault and there's nothing he can do about it.

The influence of referees won't be fixed by improving the refs, it will only be fixed by improving the rules of the game to make judgements more black and white.

Think digital, rather than analogue - every situation should be clearly X or clearly Y. The grey areas need to be minimised, if not eliminated altogether.

Failing that, penalties need to be toned down so that they're not such a massive game changer. Because at the moment they not only restart the tackle count, but boost teams 40 or 50 metres downfield. That's unfair when it's riding on some referee's judgement over whether a defender held down a tackled player vs the tackled player making it hard for the defender to get off cleanly. Or whether a runner lost the ball in the tackle vs an intentional strip.

there is no all black or all white - grey is where it's at man ..... need some decent refs who can distinguish the shades of grey

Come on poo bear...read between the lines.
The refereeing has been atrocious this year, agreed too by all the coaches.
The state of origin 2nd game is a classic example.
Watch the 1st half again and concentrate on the adjudication only.
Absolute joke.
So tell me... Why does the home team win the count?
