I'm not a parent, but my oldies never did more than a quick little slap on the bum when I was acting out and that brought me into line. I grew up happy and well-adjusted for the most part.

Really hurting a kid with a cord or a wooden spoon seems to be well overboard and sends the wrong message. Might change when I've got one of my own, but I doubt it.

I copped the leather belt once. And I learnt from it.

My step brothers though never learnt.

The worse thing though was Tabasco sauce on the tongue for swearing when I was 7.

I got the belt once. I had a hissy fit and kicked a hole in my bedroom wall. I never reallu got in too much trouble past the age of 10.

My dad threw a mug at me a few weeks ago after a screaming match. You know how they say that girls usually end up with guys like their dad? Pretty sure that was true for my ex and my dad. Never again.

New age parents suck balls.

The number of kids I come across that just deserve a good old fashioned flogging is staggering these days

This. I don't get along with my parents, but they didn't do a bad job when I was a kid. Nothing wrong with a bit of a whack if the kid is being a little merkin. I ate dirt in the yard, got dirty as all hell, ran around in the rain and the heat and the cold...I got sick less than kids these days, had more respect in general (and I was what you would have considered a little shite at times)...kids these days are pretty terrible. Not all of them of course, but loads

Working in the service industry, the things I see parents let their kids get away with. It makes me so angry. Theres not even discipline any more.

There are a lot of options between no discipline and flogging a child with a cord

Pretty hard to properly discipline your kids in public when you can actually be reported and charged with child abuse. Its not really a soft parent mentality these days but an overly active nanny state

I have 2x19 month olds and they have copped a tap on the bum when they have been really naughty. However, I am the first to admit it has been out of anger from me or the mrs and I immediately felt awful about it, and to tell you the truth it was pretty ineffective too. Taking away toys or putting them into isolation in a calm manner works much better.

Of course, this may change when they get older

I've had kids destroy stuff in my store to the point that I have to write it off. And the parents don't even utter a "stop" or "don't"

On the other hand I see kids with the best manner as well. I always make sure I comment on it too, to the child and parent.

Oh of course, and I'm not advocating that...that said, I quickly became one of those kids who laughed at a wooden spoon. My mother once whacked me hard enough she sprained her wrist and I literally giggled at her. I mean, I'm thick as a plank when it comes to pain and always have been. So it's not as simple for me as the implement. I'd never hit my kids with a cord, if and when I have them, for the record. But maybe I would have benefited as a kid? Who knows

If I was beaten for being naughty, I'd have no problem. My problem was, I'd get hit even when I did no wrong. That's what sucked for me.

I've seen kids run riot these days out in public, it's a joke.

It's a different generation now. When I was a kid you could be flogged anywhere. Home, school even my Aunties and Uncles would give me a hiding if I stepped out of line. I remember the worst one I ever copped was because my old man caught me swearing with my mates after footy training. When I got home, he belted me with an extension lead. Hurt like hell but I was back doing the same stuff next week. An Aunty once snapped a wooden spoon on my arse she hit me so hard with it. Just taught me to hide my transgressions better.

It's no different over here in the US. Two occasions this week I've been in a diner or cafe and each time a parent is letting their child make shrill, high pitched screaming noises without so much as a word or any preventative measure. Surely it frustrates them as well?
